Gerundives
Periphrastic to the Passive
Gerundives
• Gerundives are actually just another participle!
Forming Gerundives
• Using the present participle, take off the “-ns” and add “ndus”.
• Examples:– amans = amandus– videns = videndus– trahens = trahendus– capiens = capiendus– audiens = audiendus
Passive Periphrastic
• If you put a gerundive with a form of “to be” you get a passive periphrastic.
• nobis dormiendum est
• The “subject” of the phrase is in the dative, and the “direct object” is nominative and matched by the gerundive.
• matri servi puniendi sunt
