INTRODUCTION
Many traffic light systems operate on a timing mechanism that
changes the light after a given interval .
An intelligent traffic light system senses the presence or absenceof vehicles and reacts accordingly.
The idea behind the intelligent traffic light system is that drivers
will not spend unnecessary time waiting for the traffic lights to
change.
The older system users wait as trigger mechanism but nowadays
the sensor picks up the presence of vehicles and accordingly
changes the signal.

EXPERIMENTAL SETUP
HARDWARE COMPONENTS:
The three traffic system consists of 4 components:
1. Controller:
Represents the brain of the traffic system, which controls the
selection of signal as registered by sensors.(BASIC STAMP 2).
The BASIC Stamp 2 serves as the brains inside of electronics projects
and applications that require a programmable microcontroller.
2. LED:
This acts as the actuator

3. Detector/Sensor:
This indicates the presence of vehicle.(SHARP
GP2D15).
4.Count Down Timer:
Display period of time and it activates the signal.

BS2 it is used as the micro controller of the traffic signal which needs to be
plugged to the Board Of Education[BOE],is directly attached to the computerin order to program it.
The wiring for input output signals is done from this board.
The BS2 microcontroller has 16 i/o ports which are divided into 8 input and 8
output ports .
The output ports which are from P0 to P8 give either logic 0 or 1 to the LEDs.
The input port which are from the P8 to P15 receive input signal from the
sensors.
In each line there are 3 LEDs according to the traffic light colors which
consists ofRED, YELLOW, GREEN.
When the GREEN LED is ON, the RED and YELLOW LED will be OFF &
vice versa.

SOFTWARE SIMULATION:
The program written in the BASIC programming language in
the BASIC STAMP is downloaded into the microcontroller.
The simulation of the algorithm of traffic signal system was done
using MATLAB software.
The countdown timer interfacing according to the traffic system
using Lab VIEW software.
IMPLEMENTATION:
A single 3 lamp traffic light is considered as a finite state
machine which has 3 state red, yellow, green, which are also the
outputs.

IMPLEMENTATION RESULTS:
The traffic signal operation will start by the traffic lights illuminatingin red in all directions.
Then the traffic signals will start illuminating in the clockwise direction
of the magnetic compass.
It will start from the north lane, then the east lane, then south lane and
then the north lane again.,

COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEM:
Japan has installed sensors on its highways to notify motorists that a
car is stalled ahead.
VARIABLE SPEED LIMITS:
Speed limits only change to decline during poor condition rather
being improved in good ones.
Variable speed limit signal is 1st
experimented
in britains M25 motorway.
Implementation results indicated
savings in journey times smoother
flowing traffic and fall in the number of
accidents.

VIDEO VEHICLE DETECTION
Traffic flow measurement and automatic accidentdetection using video cameras is another form of
vehicle detection.
Video vehicle detection system also involves
automatic number plate recognition, this do not
involve installing any components directly into theroad.

AUTOMATIC ROAD ENFORCEMENT
A traffic enforcement camera system, consisting of a camera and a
vehicle monitoring device.
Cameras will identify vehicles travelling over the legal speed limit
Red light cameras that detect vehicles that cross a stop line while red

CONCLUSION:
Consequences of this traffic system reduces and also
eradicates the traffic problem.
Increasing the number of sensors to detect the presence of
vehicles can further enhance the traffic system.
Infrared sensors replaced with an imaging system/camera
system so that it has wide range of capabilities, which canbe enhanced and ventured into a perfect traffic system
