“Campiña Sur”, this is why it is farther (26 km) from Zalamea than the other villages.

Retamal has got a population of about 500 people.

Although it is geographically closer to La Serena, the appellation “Llerena”

derives from its inclusion in the judicial District of Llerena.

Retamal has a single monument, the Church of San Pedro, patron of the town…

It is not a big town

but it is one of the most beautiful

and richest in historical buildings.

CASTILLO DE

ARRIBALAVILLA

The castle of Zalamea was built around

the year 466. When the Visigoth Kings

arrived, they established the Spanish Court

in it. It’s got three cylindrical towers and

a heptagonal tower called “Carlos V”.

DÍSTYLO

It is 24 metres high and it is a

unique funeral memorial,

possibly the most important in

the world. It was raised in the

year 103 in Honour of the

emperor Trajan. It is located in

Constitution Square, but first it

was located outside the walls

of the city of Iulipa.

CANCHO ROANO

Cancho Roano is an archaeological site located three miles from Zalamea in the direction of Quintana de la Serena, in a small valley along the stream Cagancha. It is the best preserved Tartessian site. It dates back to the XI century BCE, although the building was expanded and modified in later centuries.

Doctor Richard Freund theorizes that Cancho Roano was a "memorial city"

designed to serve as a ceremonial representation of the lost city of

Tartessos, which, in Freund's theory, was also Atlantis. Freund argued that a stele found at Cancho Roano displayed an image with concentric circles that

matches Plato's description of Atlantis

Cancho Roano is the most interesting historical site in the region,Don’t miss it when you come to Spain!

“THE POND”

“The pond” is a rural place 8 km far from Zalamea in the direction of Higuera de La Serena.

Many people from Zalamea have got a country house in this area
