Registos desenhados. Antecedentes
as novas estruturas exumadas (4) .
e a procurar neles novos indícios.
1); e a primeira

Drawn registrations. Antecedents
There is more than a century between the first and the last global representation of the roman
city of Conimbriga. They are documents created by multidisciplinary teams, that try to register the
successive discoveries and to programme subsequent actions; but they also try to foresee, deduct,
interpret. Regarding the ruin, only specialists, mainly architects and archaeologists, can interpret the
marks left in the territory by civilizations, what is understood as palimpsest.
The first global plan of Conimbriga was created in 1899 by Eduardo Belo Ferraz. It’s a water-colour
registration, witnessed by the drillings made by António Augusto Gonçalves, which was the matrix for
an oil painting by the same author. On this registration were represented later the excavations made
in the 1930’s by the Direcção-Geral dos Edifícios e Monumentos Nacionais (Directorate-General for
National Buildings and Monuments)(1) .
The plan ordered by the Government in 1939, to study the ramification giving tourists access to the
ruins, was the basis to the DGEMN (Directorate-General for National Buildings and Monuments)’s
work during the 1940’s and 50’s.(2) . From this plan new ones were created, where the successive
discoveries and the later ruins’ valorisation works were registered (3) .
It was also from the 1939 plan, that the Luso-French Archaeological Mission, which excavated the
city’s monumental centre between 1964 and 1971, drew the new data gathered, adding the new exhumed
structures (4) . Besides the building’s survey, drawn stone-by-stone, the Luso-French Archaeological
Mission in Portugal, cooperating with the Bureau d’Architecture Antique de Pau, elaborates a series of
drawn reconstitutions of the city’s main buildings; these reconstitutions are still used today as a vehicle
to assure the intelligibility of the ruins and to identify later made partial reconstitution actions (5) .
Another reconstitution model was also created: a maquette of the Conimbriga’s flavian forum at
a scale of 1/50 (6) . In a published work dedicated to the construction of this maquette, the ones who
were responsible by the monument’s interpretation, Jorge de Alarcão, Robert Etienne and Jean-Claude
Golvin, noticed the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration, stating:
“A technical problem urges the archaeologist to re-examine the remains revealed by the excavation
and to search for new traces in them. The construction of the maquette [to which we add the
construction of any reconstitution model] impels the modern architect and the archaeologist into a
fertile dialog, and it is the eloquent testimony of its complementarity and collaboration”(7) .
Recently, other registrations were made, from which we can distinguish: the Conimbriga’s city essay of
visualization in the 2nd century AD, carried out by Jean-Claude Golvin in 1990 (Fig. 1); and the first attempt
of a drawn restitution of the high roman imperial urban area held by Virgílio H. Correia, in 2004 (8) .
