DEL ESCRITORIO DEL MISTEREMBAJADORESDEL SIERRA NEVADA

En la vida nos da siempre mucho gus-to cuando podemos ver con hechos que el trabajo y esfuerzo de todos los

días ha valido la pena. Eso es precisamente lo que todos los que formamos parte de la Escuela Sierra Nevada sentimos cuando vi-sitó México, hace unas semanas, la esposa del Presidente de los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, la Sra. Michelle Obama.

Dos exalumnos de nuestra escuela, quienes cursaron todos sus estudios con nosotros y graduados uno de ellos el ciclo escolar pasado y el otro hace cinco años, tuvieron un papel protagónico en dos importantes eventos de la visita de la Sra. Obama.

Jaime Enríquez se graduó el ciclo escolar pasado y acaba de terminar el segundo se-mestre de la carrera de Derecho en la Uni-versidad Iberoamericana. Jaime ingresó a la universidad en agosto pasado y apenas ini-ciando su vida universitaria decidió formar parte de un equipo de debate, con el cual participó en un concurso en donde compi-tió con alumnos de sexto y séptimo semestre obteniendo el 1° lugar. En ese tiempo no se imaginaba los alcances que tendría su parti-cipación en ese concurso, ya que meses des-pués recibiría la invitación para dar el dis-curso de bienvenida a la Sra. Obama, quien dirigiría unas palabras a los jóvenes en la Universidad Iberoamericana. Fue el elegido


por su gran participación en los debates. Al recibir la noticia, fue con su mentor, quien le sugirió hacer una lluvia de ideas sobre los temas que le gustaría tocar y así, logro de-limitar el tema al que se iba a enfocar para !nalmente, dedicarse a escribir.

Jaime nos comentó que antes de subir a dar su discurso de bienvenida no estaba nervioso, pero si pensaba en la importancia del evento y en las reacciones que podrían tener sus palabras. Curiosamente, fue la misma Sra. Obama quien con sus palabras de aliento lo ayudó a concentrarse: “Te va a ir muy bien”, le dijo con seguridad y una sonrisa en su rostro.

El discurso fue un gran éxito, lo presen-tó con una gran tranquilidad y aplomo. Al !nalizar fue felicitado tanto por la Sra. Obama como por la comunidad educati-va en general.

A partir de esta destacada participación, se le ha invitado a dirigir en la Ibero el pro-grama del Bicentenario 2.0 y a representar a su universidad en el Simposio Interna-cional de Estudiantes Líderes en Malacca, Malasia, organizado por Humanitarian A"airs, UK y el gobierno de Malasia.

Alberto Irezabal estudió la carrera de In-geniería Industrial también en la Universi-dad Iberoamericana. Prácticamente al estar terminando la carrera, se inscribió como vo-luntario para trabajar temporalmente en un proyecto de apoyo a pequeños productores indígenas de café en el estado de Chiapas.

Beto nos comentó que quedó impactado por el nivel de pobreza en la zona, pero que al ver que existían grandes posibilidades de desarrollo decidió ofrecer su apoyo al pro-yecto de manera permanente. En primera instancia elaboró un plan de negocios, el cual fue puesto en práctica inmediatamen-te. Poco después, Beto presentó dicho plan en el concurso “Innovación Empresarial con Vinculación Social” organizado por Banco Santander, en el cual obtuvo el pri-mer lugar y se hizo acreedor de un premio de $500,000.00 pesos, mismo que donó en su totalidad al proyecto de apoyo.

Beto ha dedicado estos últimos años todo su tiempo y esfuerzo a promover el proyecto. Fue contratado como director general del mismo y nos comenta que cuando inició, los pequeños productores

producían tres toneladas de café al año, el cual era vendido a grandes empresas para su comercialización.

En la actualidad el café que se produce es totalmente orgánico y las 24 toneladas que se produjeron el año pasado, fueron vendi-das directamente a empresas transnacionales de diferentes partes del mundo, incluyendo Japón, evitándose así intermediarios.

Por este gran logro de fuerte impacto social, es que Beto, junto con otros 10 jó-venes de distintos estratos de nuestra socie-dad, triunfadores todos ellos en proyectos sociales, fue invitado a desayunar con la Sra. Obama. Él nos comenta que el desayu-no fue exclusivo para ellos y que tuvieron la oportunidad de sentarse a la mesa con la Sra. Obama con quien tuvieron la oportu-nidad de hablar sobre aspectos especí!cos de sus proyectos. Beto recuerda con alegría

que al !nalizar el desayuno, la Sra. Obama se acercó a él para felicitarlo y para agrade-cerle el que le hubiera permitido utilizar en su discurso de la Universidad Iberoameri-cana, unas palabras que él mismo había pronunciado un año antes en ese mismo foro. Un gran honor verdaderamente.

Jaime y Alberto, por este medio me per-mito, a nombre de toda la Comunidad Sierra Nevada, felicitarlos por sus grandes logros. Han puesto el nombre de su querida Sierra Nevada muy en alto, y sus éxitos los disfrutamos todos, nos han llenado de ale-gría y sobre todo nos motivan a continuar trabajando con nuestras futuras generacio-nes de seres humanos talentoso y exitosos.

Cuando un sueño se vuelve reali-dad, hay muchas cosas que agra-decer, muchas que ponderar, otras

tantas que revisar, y sobre todo, todo que compartir. Centro Educativo NEMI, se gestó así, como un sueño entre Mr. Agui-lar y yo, y nunca creímos que éste fuera a rendir los frutos que hoy, nos ha dado.

Este año se gradúa nuestra primera ge-neración de 6º de Primaria, si, nuestra pri-mera generación, los primeros niños que hace 7 años llegaron a nuestra muy pe-queña escuela, y que hoy parten y termi-nan un ciclo muy importante en su vida y en la de todos los que formamos NEMI.

Se van preparados para enfrentar otras escuelas, otros retos como es la secunda-ria, la prepa y la universidad. Son niños brillantes, que han alcanzado un grado de excelencia educativa, pero sobre todo, son niños seguros de si mismos, alegres, con!ados, agradecidos y que han sabido junto con sus padres aprovechar esta gran oportunidad que tuvieron de estudiar con excelentes maestros y de obtener una educación completamente bilingüe, tal como la reciben los niños en cualquier otro plantel del Sierra Nevada.

Hoy les decimos adiós, esperando que la semilla que se sembró en este maravilloso lu-gar rinda sus frutos y que cada uno de estos pequeños encuentre el mejor camino para llegar a ser exitosos y sobre todo: felices.

Sofía, Fernando, Alondra, Jessica, Marco, Ana Karen, Azul, Dante, Karen Jazmín, Esteban, Harumi, Daniel, Paola y Lulú, estamos muy orgullosos de ustedes, han logrado terminar con éxito esta etapa y sabemos que irán por más en la vida. No quiero decirles adiós, las puertas de esta escuela, su escuela, están abiertas para us-tedes, queremos saber hacia donde irán, que carrera elegirán, queremos seguir siempre cerca de ustedes.

Los sueños como decía, se comparten, se festejan, y toda la comunidad Sierra Nevada, debe estar muy contenta con este gran evento. Gracias a quiénes han cola-borado para que nuestra escuela crezca, ya sea con donativos, apoyo moral, y sobre todo buena voluntad.

UN SUEÑO HECHO REALIDAD

A mi querido Nemi,Me gustaría tener una caja para guardar cada momento. Todos estos años hemos

aprendido a crecer y a cómo decir te quiero a una persona.

Desde que he estado en Nemi he compartido experiencias inolvidables y proble-

mas. Todos somos integrantes de una pequeña familia pero tenemos un gran corazón.

Hemos llorado y reído juntos, con cada uno he tenido momentos especiales y ma-

ravillosos y una de esas experiencias fue cuando conocí a amigas que hasta la fecha

me han apoyado mucho. He llorado con ellas, reído y visto las cosas desde otro punto

de vista, no sólo ellas, también a mis demás compañeros a quienes les agradezco el

apoyo estos años.

Sin dejar atrás a mis maestras Miss Carla, Miss Betty, Miss Paty y mis maestras actua-

les Miss Elsa y Miss Lupita lo cual les agradezco estos años que he aprendido mucho y

me han escuchado. Para mí han sido las mejores, siento mucho su apoyo en mí.

increíbles. Siempre recordamos muchas cosas, para cada uno de nosotros recordar es

volver a vivirlo. A mi y a mis compañeros nos encanta recordar todos los momentos, no

importa donde estemos y por qué estemos pasando.

Pienso en especial en Azul, Karen, Jessica, Paola, Dante, Fernando, Alondra y

Daniel, no encuentro palabras para describirlos tal cuales, las extraordinarias perso-

nas que son, lo cual les agradezco por todo lo que soy, por su apoyo, siempre están

ahí para ayudarme y quiero que sepan que también cuentan conmigo, son como mis

hermanos y los hermanos se ayudan, por esas y más cosas les agradezco todos estos

buenos momentos que he pasado con cada uno de ellos.

Por último no tengo como agradecer a Mr. Aguilar la oportunidad que

nos ha dado de poder tener una educación de excelencia en Nemi

y prepararnos para un futuro mejor.

MARIANO GUERRERO Pez rape al ataque Tercer Lugar categoría A

El 11 de mayo se realizó en el Museo Casa de la Bola la !nal de la 4a. Bie-nal de Pintura Infantil. Este tipo de

eventos engrandecen a nuestros artistas, los motivan a seguir en su arte, les damos un espacio para mostrar su talento y les ha-cemos ver, que aunque el mundo artístico es muy competitivo, siempre hay un lugar en los museos, como éste, que impulsan a los niños a pintar y seguir creando.

En esta ocasión contamos con la parti-cipación del Colegio Ciudad de México, el Colegio Mérici, el Colegio El Roble y el Colegio Peterson junto con nuestros tres planteles, Interlomas, Lomas y San Mateo. Tuvimos la distinguida presencia de un jurado selecto integrado por la Lic. Olivia Contreras, Presidenta de AAIEER ARTE OBJETO, la Mtra. Margarita Arnal, cura-dora de arte y el pintor David Lach.

La cita se dio a las 17:00 hs. en un am-biente de gran expectativa para nuestros pequeños artistas que además de un di-ploma por su participación vieron plas-mada su obra y la de sus compañeros en el catálogo conmemorativo de este mag-no evento. Todos gozaron de la visita a la casa museo y a los jardines mientras espe-raban la premiación en donde los gana-dores del primer, segundo y tercer lugar se llevaron a casa como trofeo un “Alebrije”. #ue mejor que se lleven una de nuestras artesanías internacionalmente reconoci-das para que así como Pedro Linares, el creador de este arte, sigan soñando y pin-tando y nos muestren, a través de su obra, su alegría, su creatividad y su inmensa imaginación.

Felicito a todos los participantes por-que hoy triunfaron. Ellos son el futuro ar-tístico de México y harán algo grandioso de este país.

JUNTASDE APOYO

Una parte importante de la comuni-dad Sierra Nevada es su personal, porque gracias a su dedicación y

empeño, podemos brindar a nuestros pa-dres de familia y alumnos el servicio que se merecen.

Es por esta razón que dentro de la es-cuela, contamos con un sistema de eva-luación de personal cuya !losofía se centra en la persona, tiene un carácter formativo y busca ante todo el desarrollo personal y profesional del individuo denominado “Proceso de Orientación y Crecimiento Profesional”.

La parte medular de este programa se basa en las juntas de apoyo que todo el personal tiene periódicamente con un supervisor designado, en ellas se abordan temas de superación personal, crecimien-to profesional y desempeño laboral. La periodicidad de las juntas de apoyo varía

según el tipo de trabajador y las necesida-des especí!cas del supervisado.

En el caso de los docentes, las juntas de apoyo involucran al director del área co-rrespondiente o a la persona que éste desig-ne y al maestro, se programa por lo menos cada quince días y tienen una duración de una hora. En ellas se abordan tópicos tales como currículum, desempeño de los alum-nos, relaciones interpersonales, desarrollo profesional y de habilidades docentes.

Tiene un carácter formativo y busca

el desarrollo personal y profesional del individuo.

TRABAJO MEDULAR PARA EL DESARROLLO

Las juntas del personal directivo, se realizan entre el director correspon-diente y su jefe inmediato. Se llevan a cabo por lo menos una vez al mes con una duración de una hora. En ellas además de platicar sobre el desarrollo personal y profesional del director, se analiza el desempeño de su área de tra-bajo, nuevos proyectos, logros y áreas de oportunidad.

Los empleados administrativos tiene su junta por lo menos una vez al mes y los trabajadores manuales por lo menos tres veces al año. En ambos caso se busca el crecimiento integral del individuo y de su área de trabajo.

Como escuela, creemos !rmemente que los resultados de este sistema de evaluación de personal se ven re$ejados en la calidad de la atención y servicio que se brinda a la comunidad educativa.


M iss Lore Martínez was born in Mexico City, the !rst of two children. Her mother was Mercy Palm, who also worked in our school as a librarian for sev-

eral years. Her dad worked as an industrial engineer for a family company. Her brother Gerardo lives and works in San Luis Potosi. Lore is now the proud aunt of Maria Pia, who is 10 months old.

Lore comes from a long line of teachers. Her aunt, Miss Paty, is the English Director of the primary school at our Interlomas campus. Her grandmother came to Mexico from Pennsylvania

in the 1940s. She started a school geared to teach English to Mexican children.

From the time Miss Lore was a little girl, she knew that she wanted to be a teacher. She played teacher with her dolls and with her playmates whenever possible.

She studied the Montessori method of education at the Pana-merican Montessori Society for two years before she was hired at the Montessori Kings School where she worked with nursery school children for four years. Miss Lore came to our school at the suggestion of her Aunt Paty eleven years ago, and she has continued to be one of the most enthusiastic learners, taking almost all the courses the school o"ers to teachers. She worked with four-year-old children for eight years and has been teach-ing at the Kinder III level for the past three years.

Miss Lore loves to read whenever possible, but her real pas-sion is seen in her love for animals. She has two dogs that were special gi%s from two of her students. If you want to see her get excited about a certain subject, I would suggest you discuss the care of any type of animal. She gets very upset when she hears that an animal has been mistreated in any way.

When I observe her in the classroom I !nd that she is both supportive and caring toward her students, always taking time to be with them on an individual level. &rough modeling behavior, she makes each and every one of her students feel accepted and important to the class. She takes time to help her students over-come their mistakes through patient and clear instructions.

Miss Lore´s friends all agree that she is a person whom every-one likes to be with because she enjoys laughing and has a great sense of humor.

For the last three years, Miss Lore and Miss Ana have been giv-ing art classes to children in the a%ernoons. &ey call these classes “Busy Kids” because this is not just a class that teaches arts and cra%s. &ey really want the children to learn about di"erent types of art and the history related to the various artists. &ey visit muse-ums and have artists come to speak to the children about their art.

Miss Lore wants to express her appreciation for our school because she believes that Escuela Sierra Nevada has given her the opportunity to grow both as a person and as a teacher.

E l taller que nos ofreció este ciclo la Dirección de Programas y Proyectos Generales de nuestra escuela sobre creatividad,

entendiéndola como “la forma de atrapar y sintetizar el universo -

aprendido a bloquear con ciertos elementos, nuestra creatividad y cómo en nuestra comunidad tenemos personas que han apren-dido de los niños cosas como la originalidad, sensibilidad y es-pontaneidad.

CONCURSO VEX ROBOTICS

E l pasado mes de marzo se llevó a cabo en la Universidad Panamericana el concurso de robótica “Vex Robotics Com-

petition”. La Escuela Sierra Nevada tuvo el orgullo de ser repre-

ellos bajo la dirección de la profesora Olivia Urdapilleta Leyva. Con trabajo en equipo, perseverancia e imaginación lograron

-petencia.

El camino para llegar a la competencia fue sinuoso. Los alum-nos se enfrentaron al reto de trabajar con un equipo descono-cido, aprender nuevas habilidades como la programación y principalmente el participar en una competencia de nivel inter-nacional. El ambiente que se vivió durante la competencia fue de solidaridad, no sólo entre los alumnos sino por parte de los padres de familia quienes estuvieron apoyando a sus hijos en cada momento de la competencia.

¡QUECREATIVO!

los integrantes del taller porque gracias a cada uno de ellos, sus aportaciones, comentarios y “creatividad” muy personal, han he-cho que el curso sea uno de mis favoritos, que esté aprendiendo técnicas, estrategias y conceptos nuevos, al mismo tiempo que “aprender a desaprender” y lo mejor… conocer y aprender tanto de cada uno de ellos.

I n order to continue promoting values at school as well as home, our students were asked to write a composition about

the value that they were learning about together with their parents. This past month our students learned about Self-Es-teem. We received many wonderful samples, it was hard to de-cide which one to publish!

“For us self esteem means how much you love and accept yourself. We should be proud of who we are, how we look and what we have. It is very important to be happy with ourselves, because if we are, we will grow being more secure with our per-sonality, our values and our own thoughts. This will help us do what we think is correct even in times when our friends or class-mates want us to do something different. When we are young it is easy to want to be like someone else or imitate the girl or boy sitting next to me so that I feel accepted. In any way, we must know very well who we are and make sure we are aware of all the great and good qualities we have. This will help us love our-selves and be very proud of who we are, even if we look, dress, act or have different things than the rest of our friends or class-mates. Because the most important thing is to be ourselves and not what others want us to be. It is important to know that not being yourself does not make you a better person.”

" Emilio", Alvaro´s Golden Retriever, came to visit our class and we had lots of fun! Now we know that he is 10 years

old, he eats once a day every afternoon, and he takes a bath every month. The most important thing we know about Emilio is that he loves kids and being a pet!

P reschool has had lots of activities during the past months. High-schoolers have been involved in some of them and we have

truly enjoyed their participation. Parents have also come to share their job descriptions very actively in the classrooms. Children`s Day was a lot of fun as well, and even though our students thought they had this long weekend because of this important date, I hope they understood the real reason after the Cinco de Mayo ceremony!

P ractice makes perfect! That’s certainly true when it comes to mastering the art of spelling.

Nevada San Mateo, spelled the word “jelly” to win the Spelling Bee on Friday morning.

-vousness and excitement didn’t stop Regina Gerard and Santiago Sandoval from staying focused and winning the 2nd and 3rd place medals.

After the 10th round and many competitors still up, the game got even more challenging as they were asked to spell unexpected words that were chosen randomly right at the moment from their spelling book.

En relación a esto, el pasado jueves 4 de marzo, los alumnos de Español de primer grado de secun-daria del plantel San Mateo, lleva-ron a cabo una exposición en la que compartieron con sus compañeros de segundo y tercero; así como con los alumnos de sexto grado de primaria, sus trabajos sobre Las Lenguas Indígenas; trabajos que les hicieron cono-

distinta a la nuestra.Todos los trabajos exhibidos fueron realizados por los alumnos, después

de haber investigado sobre la lengua que les fue asignada para luego ir ar-mando el contenido de la exposición.

E scuela Sierra Nevada prides itself in being in the forefront of edu-cational practice and therefore

being able to o"er its students optimum learning experiences. For the past !ve years we have been reviewing the role of assessment in high school instruction and have come to understand the many ways in which evaluation instruments and pro-cedures can enrich learning and facilitate our students’ transition in academic work from high school to college.

Our school has always operated under sound key evaluation principles and practi-ces. Our evaluation is formative, that is, it is structured to help the student achieve the es-sential learning targets in each subject. Eva-luation is also used by the school to analyze both individual and group performances, and make any necessary interventions and adaptations to improve instructional design and learning. Partial and term examinations are always designed to measure how well

objectives are being met. Projects and other types of assessment instruments are both necessary and encouraged.&e nature of learning is cumulati-

ve, therefore measuring learning in high school is more relevant towards the end of the semester and thus most of the weight of a grade takes place in the last month or so. &is is also the way most universities operate. At this stage the evaluation beco-mes summative, meaning that the student has !nished a cycle of learning (one semes-ter), as well as the ability to identify what a student can accomplish; this is no longer formative, it is the time to know what the student has learned and is able to do with the knowledge he/she has acquired.&ese are the principles that were used

to help us to understand the needs of high school students and improve our evalua-tion system. Now, teachers design their courses every semester by identifying es-sential learning targets and matching those

to the assessment instruments to be used. Faculty submits the plan for consideration prior to the beginning of the school year and is then made known to the students during the !rst week of classes, as a colle-ge professor would do. &e plan needs to provide for both formative and summative evaluation that will ful!ll students’ needs to accomplish the goals. While formative reports are sent mid-semester, summative grades are awarded at the end. A !nal eva-luation (not necessarily an exam) is requi-red in each academic subject.

In its third year of implementation, both students and teachers recognize the value behind this innovation. Our alumni have given feedback on how this training has prepared them for college work: “It is important for us to know about the in-tensity and variety of tasks required from us by universities”, a graduate said “I feel like we are better o" than most of our classmates”, another mentioned in passing while visiting us during our Cultural Week last spring. Students that had experience in both systems mentioned how the new system cut down on “petty work” and has made tasks more relevant: “Even though I missed exemptions at !rst”, she said, “it is now obvious how most teachers added examinations and assignments when ‘avi-sos’ were due. Now, there are fewer evalua-tions but they are programmed for when we !nish the unit, and assignments are gi-ven with enough time for us to complete”.

Teachers on the other hand appreciate the $exibility of designing an assessment plant to !t their instructional needs. “No longer do we have to have a speci!c number of grades turned in by a certain date”, one said, “we can now continually supervise student work without the need to grade it by a certain date, and if more time is needed we can give it”. In addition, grades are more representative of what students actually know.&rough the new assessment policy we

are promoting a culture of excellence whe-re students are evaluated on their knowled-ge and skill. We are also detecting a better relation between students’ skills, what they can produce, and the !nal grade. &e real measure of academic growth!

The person I admire most

The person I admire most is someone really close to me. He is my friend, my partner, or technically, my

dad.Although we have the same blood in our veins we also share other interests.

We both love most of the sports such as soccer, football, basketball and U.F.C. We also like action

movies and art.Our favorite sport is soccer and something we also share is our favorite soccer player, who is Thi-

erry Henry. He is a French player in the Barcelona team.

My dad likes soccer so much that he always tries to go to my soccer matches. And we also see pro-

fessional soccer matches. Since I was small he taught me how to play, understand and love soccer.

My dad has taught me how to be a good person and human being by showing me to always work

hard for your family.

He also has given me the option to choose many things such

as ways of looking at life and how to be, how to dress and how

to act.He is a funny person and a person who just loves life. He is

an adventurer, intelligent and creative. He always tries to help

and make everyone happy. In a few words a happy man with an

enormous heart.Dad, I love you. You are a great human being, a partner, and

most of all, the best father in the whole world. I thank you for

Soccer Dreams in 2010th

M ax García was not a normal guy. He was 12 years old but he always liked

to play soccer with older guys. He had been invited by some players to train with the 14-17 year old players.

He trained with all his determination and en-ergy. Everyone liked him to be on the team and joked about his height. “There goes the tall one”, they said. Everyone liked him on the team… everyone, except two.

These two were Alex and Rafael. Alex didn’t like him because he was the youngest player until Max arrived. Rafael didn’t liked Max because he thought he was very weak, slow, and little.

It was Thursday, January 11, 2010, the day for the team’s try-out. An hour before the tryout Rafael said:

“Max, you’re too weak. You’re too slow. You don’t belong with the team. You shouldn`t try this.”

But Max was too determined to quit. He wouldn’t waste the chance. He’d try with all his energy and strength. No one could

stop him.It was 6:00 P.M., time for the tryout. Max was the sec-

-utes that were given. It was Max’s turn and he tried his best. He made more than he expected. Alex made 13 and Rafael made 14. Max made 16. Max entered the team, became champion and some years later, be-

came captain. His team was now on Mexico’s First Di-vision of Soccer.

He proudly played for a long time on his team and still remem-bers how everything started… a guy, a dream, and a ball.

T here once was this girl named Monic. She lived in an old

ranch in Tennessee. She was al-most a teenager, but did not have any self esteem. Girls and boys at her school bothered her and even some of her friends because she had darker skin. Sometimes she avoided them, but other times it was just hopeless. In every corner

of her school she found a new kid and another insult. Monic could not take it anymore. At night she would cry in her mother’s arms. Her mother would assure her that “No matter what color you are, or what religion or anything else that might make you different, you are the same as everyone else.” Sometimes Monic felt better, but it was really hard to get the insults out of her head. Every time they came into her head she thought of what her mom had told her. At school it didn’t bother her anymore, but they still teased her. When she grew up and went off to High School, her mother passed away. It was a very hard time for her, but things began to get better. She was a straight “A” student. Almost toward the end of her Senior Year, they asked all the stu-dents to write an essay, poem or card about an experience that marked them, and taught them a lesson while growing up. When Monic handed in her assignment and received an A+, she was thrilled. Her teacher said it was beautiful. On graduation day her teacher asked her to read it to everyone. The phrase said:

“...It took years for me to feel safe outside of my mother’s arms. It took years for me to feel comfortable in my own skin. I never felt as pretty as the lighter skinned girls. It took years to erase all the teasing. But, one day I looked in the mirror and smiled. I learned that no matter what color you are, or what re-ligion, or anything else, you are a person – just like everyone else.”
