ABSTRACT
Development of two software components that lead an increase in the automation of two
rail tests environments. The first component will allow the creation and manipulation of
application layer messages while the second component will function as an interface
between test scripts and the ERTMS bench simulation.
Keywords: tests environments, ERTMS, automation
1. Introduction
When developing a new railway component, there is an exhaustive testing process that
the component must pass to ensure its reliability and safety. These tests, using real
components in track and needing the entire railway environment, are a very expensive
process, which produce an increase in the final price of the components. Many of these
tests, especially the ones related with the functionality of the component, do not need to
be carried out in a real environment.
Because of this, railway companies begin to create test environments in which various
components are simulated allowing extensive testing on the functionality of the
components. Such environments have some automation in the way that most of the
process is performed without human intervention. By analyzing in detail those
environments, it is observed that there are certain parts of the testing process that
present an opportunity where improvements will allow reaching a level of almost total
automation.
2. Definition of the project
The project will focus on the design, development and implementation of two
applications in order to increase automation environment to which they belong.
The first application, called ALS or Application Layer Simulator, will be immersed
into the generic application test environment and consist of a tool that, with access to
the protocol specification file, allows to create and manipulate messages in a simple
and intuitive way , and readable for human. This tool will allow the user or component
witch uses it to modify the elements of messages and access the values of their
variables without needing to manipulate the streams in a bit-level.
The second application, called Remote Control of ERTMS Bank (CRBE) will be
immersed into the specific application test environment and will consist of a
component that serves as an interface between the script engine and the ERTMS
simulation bank. With this component, it will be able to access the simulator from the
script engine, allowing executing the entire test without human intervention.
3. Description of the model/system/tool
ALS architecture will consist of three components, as shown in the figure below:
Figura 6. ALS component diagram
GestorMensajes, main and central component, will be responsible for
providing the methods to use the tool and for all the modifications in the
message.
Mensaje, component in charge of the queries about the variables of the
message. The component will also contain the information about every
instance of the message.
ParserXML, component responsible for obtaining and reading into the
information about the messages´ structure , obtained through the protocol
specification file
CRBE architecture will consist of four main components, which interact with two other
(existing ones) as shown in the figure below:

CORBA component will be responsible for obtaining the CORBA references to
communicate with the methods of the ERTMS simulation bank.
CRBE component is the main component and its main purpose will be to
initialize the application by starting the other components.
ServidorCRBE component is in charge of managing communication with the
script engine and check the syntax of the orders received.
GestorConfiguracion component is responsible for reading and obtaining the
proper configuration of the tool.
4. Results

5. Conclusions
The main conclusion obtained after completion of the project is the true need for
automation present in every industrial process. The current technological sector is in
way of act trying to automate every single process. This project has revealed the
savings (in human resources, time and money) because of automate an industrial
process.
