A letter from the Pastor My dear People at Blessed Seelos Parish: Happy New (Liturgical) Year! You may wonder what do I mean by that. With the beginning of Advent, we mark the beginning of a new Church year. Even before New Year’s Day, we are already anticipating the beginning of a new year in which the liturgy of the Church guides our every move. Advent marks the beginning of the year and of our preparation for Christmas. I was watching the other day an announcement on television about a movie entitled, “The Man Who Invented Christmas,” and unless we are talking about Jesus himself, it seems to be a very misleading title. I have not seen the movie, so I may be misinterpreting the title, but there are lots of pressures out there in the world to try to reduce Christmas to a time when we shop more than usual. As we celebrate the first Sunday of Advent the key word in the Scripture readings for today is “Watch!” Watch what? Watch who? Watch why? Watch when? This is what I think Jesus would answer: Watch how well you are using your time on earth. Watch your God, your neighbor, and yourself and how can you live a better life. Watch because time is precious. Watch now because it is all we have. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo (Litúrgico)! Pensarán que quiero decir con eso. Con el Adviento marcamos el comienzo del año Eclesial. Aun antes del día de Año Nuevo, anticipamos el comienzo de un nuevo año en que la liturgia de la Iglesia nos guía. El Adviento marca el comienzo del año y de nuestra preparación para la Navidad. Estaba mirando un anuncio de una película el otro día con el título, “El Hombre que Inventó la Navidad,” y a menos que estemos hablando de Jesús, me parece un título muy equivocado. No he visto la película, así que quizás esté juzgando mal, pero hay muchas presiones en el mundo para reducir la Navidad a un tiempo que compramos mucho. Al celebrar este primer domingo de Adviento las palabras claves de las lecturas de hoy son: “¡Estén alertas!” ¿De qué? ¿De quién? ¿Por qué? ¿Cuándo? Esto es lo que creo que respondería Jesús: Estén alertas de como usan su tiempo. Estén alertas de su Dios, su prójimo, y de ustedes mismos para vivir de mejor manera. Estén alertas ya que el tiempo es de gran valor. Estén alertas ahora ya que es todo lo que tenemos. Fr. José Ignacio
