2014. Biosensors and Bioelectronics. The Rhodobacter sphaeroides reaction centreis a relatively robust and tractable membrane protein that has potential forexploitation in technological applications, including biohybrid devices forphotovoltaics and biosensing. This report assessed the usefulness of thephotocurrent generated by this reaction centre adhered to a small working electrodeas the basis for a biosensor for classes of herbicides used extensively for the controlof weeds in major agricultural crops. Photocurrent generation was inhibited in aconcentration-dependent manner by the triazides atrazine and terbutryn, but not bynitrile or phenylurea herbicides. Measurements of the effects of these herbicides onthe kinetics of charge recombination in photo-oxidised reaction centres in solutionshowed the same selectivity of response. Titrations of reaction centre photocurrentsyielded half maximal inhibitory concentrations of 208nM and 2.1µM for terbutryn andatrazine, respectively, with limits of detection estimated at around 8nM and 50nM,respectively.

2014. Environ. Sci. Techno. Graphene-family nanomaterials (GFNs) includingpristine graphene, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and graphene oxide (GO) offergreat application potential, leading to the possibility of their release into aquaticenvironments. Upon exposure, graphene/rGO and GO exhibit different adsorptionproperties toward environmental adsorbates, thus the molecular interactions at theGFN–water in te r face are d iscussed. A f te r so lu te adsorp t ion , thedispersion/aggregation behaviors of GFNs can be altered by solution chemistry, aswell as by the presence of colloidal particles and biocolloids. GO has differentdispersion performance from pristine graphene and rGO, which is furtherdemonstrated from surface properties. Upon exposure in aquatic environments,GFNs have adverse impacts on aquatic organisms (e.g., bacteria, algae, plants, invertebrates, and fish).

2014. Spectrochimica Acta Part A: Molecular and Biomolecular Spectroscopy.Hibiscus Sabdariffa (Gongura) plant extracts (leaves (HL) and stem (HS)) were usedfor the first time in the green synthesis of bio-functionalized silver nanoparticles(AgNPs). The bio-functionality of AgNPs has been successfully utilized for selectivecolorimetric sensing of potentially health and environmentally hazardous Hg2+, Cd2+and Pb2+ metal ions at ppm level in aqueous solution. Importantly, clearlydistinguishable colour for all three metal ions was observed. The influence of extractpreparation condition and pH were also explored on the formation of AgNPs. Bothselectivity and sensitivity differed for AgNPs synthesized from different parts of theplant. Direct correlation between the stability of green synthesized AgNPs at differentpH and its antibacterial effects has been established.

2014. Water Research. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated for theircapability and mechanisms to simultaneously remove colloidal natural organic matter(NOM) and humic substances from natural surface water. Static removal testing wasconducted via adsorption experiments while dynamic removal was evaluated bylayering CNTs onto substrate membranes and filtering natural water through theCNT-layered membranes. Analyses of treated water samples showed that removal ofhumic substances occurred via adsorption under both static and dynamic conditions.Removal of colloidal NOM occurred at a moderate level of 36–66% in staticconditions, independent of the specific surface area (SSA) of CNTs. Dynamicremoval of colloidal NOM increased from approximately 15% with the unmodifiedmembrane to 80–100% with the CNT-modified membranes.

2014. Desalination. Multi walled carbon nanotube/cellulose acetate (CNT/CA)nanocomposite membranes were successfully prepared by phase inversion usingacetone as solvent and 20 wt.% deionized water as non-solvent. CNTs were firstfunctionalized by oxidation purification in a strong acidic medium to enhance theirdispersion within the polymer matrix. Small amounts of the functionalized CNTs,namely 0.0005, 0.005, and 0.01 wt.% were used to prepare the membranes. TheCNTs were randomly oriented and uniformly dispersed within the membranes.Membranes' morphologies were characterized by field emission scanning electronmicroscopy (FESEM) and nitrogen adsorption.

2014. Journal of Power Sources. Rice-like brookite TiO2 particles with high phasepurity and 600 nm particle diameter were synthesized through a hydrothermalmethod, and then bilayer TiO2 film-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) werefabricated by using photoanode consisting of nanosized anatase TiO2 film asunderlayer and the above brookite TiO2 submicrometer particle film as overlayer. The effects of the brookite overlayer on the light scattering and photoelectrochemicalperformances of the anatase TiO2 film-based DSSCs were investigated by usingUV–vis diffused reflectance absorption spectra (DRS), open-circuit voltage decay(OCVD) curves and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) measurements.

2014. ACS Nano. Ionically conductive membranes are used in manyelectrochemical processes and devices, including batteries, fuel cells, andelectrolyzers. In all such applications, it is advantageous to use membranes with highionic conductivity because membrane resistance causes a voltage loss suffered bythe cell. We describe here a method for enhancing ionic conductivity in membranescontaining small diameter (4 nm) gold nanotubes. This entails making the goldnanotube membrane the working electrode in an electrochemical cell and applying avoltage to the membrane.

2014. Optics Communications. We study the magnetic field dependent near infraredphoton absorption behavior in a magnetically polarizable oil-in-water emulsion ofdroplet radius ~110nm. The absorption of near infrared photons in magneticnanoemulsion is found to be dependent on the volume fraction and applied magneticfield, which is attributed to the variation in the Mie absorption efficiency during thestructural transitions of nanoemulsion droplets in dispersion. Also, the absorptionlinearly increases with incident near infrared photon energy up to certain externalmagnetic field. The imaginary part of the refractive index ( k 1 ) of magneticnanoemulsion obtained from the near infrared absorption profile in the Rayleighregime is found to vary with external magnetic field and the sample volume fraction ( ) . The measured k 1 follows a power law increment with sample volume fraction ( k 1~ p , where p is the exponent). The exponent (p) decreases with external magneticfield implying that the structural transition of nanoemulsion droplets increases k 1.

2014. Nanotechnology. We present a coarse-grained, continuum kinetic theory for charging supercapacitors with narrowcylindrical nanopores. The theory reveals that the occupancy of a nonpolarized pore and the energy barrier for ion–ioninterdiffusion are the key issues controlling the different regimes of dynamic response. For 'ionophobic' pores, where thepore is empty at no applied voltage, charge density advances into the pore via diffusion-like dynamics. The mechanism ofcharging an 'ionophilic' pore is starkly different: for moderate ionophilicities, co-ions are expelled from the pore in a front-like manner, with significant 'congestion' at the pore entrance predicted for strong ionophilicity.

2014. ACS Nano. The development of solid materials which are able to upconvertoptical radiation into photons of higher energy is attractive for many applications suchas photocatalytic cells and photovoltaic devices. However, to fully exploittriplet–triplet annihilation photon energy upconversion (TTA-UC), oxygen protectionis imperative because molecular oxygen is an ultimate quencher of the photonupconversion process. So far, reported solid TTA-UC materials have focused mainlyon elastomeric matrices with low barrier properties because the TTA-UC efficiencygenerally drops significantly in glassy and semicrystalline matrices. To overcome thislimit, for example, combine effective and sustainable annihilation upconversion withexhaustive oxygen protection of dyes, we prepare a sustainable solid-state-likematerial based on nanocellulose. Inspired by the structural buildup of leaves inNature, we compartmentalize the dyes in the liquid core of nanocellulose-basedcapsules which are then further embedded in a cellulose nanofibers (NFC) matrix.

2014. ACS Nano. Organic–inorganic metal halide perovskite solar cells werefabricated by laminating films of a carbon nanotube (CNT) network onto aCH3NH3PbI3 substrate as a hole collector, bypassing the energy-consumingvacuum process of metal deposition. In the absence of an organic hole-transportingmaterial and metal contact, CH3NH3PbI3 and CNTs formed a solar cell with anefficiency of up to 6.87%. The CH3NH3PbI3/CNTs solar cells were semitransparentand showed photovoltaic output with dual side illuminations due to the transparencyof the CNT electrode. Adding spiro-OMeTAD to the CNT network forms a compositeelectrode that improved the efficiency to 9.90% due to the enhanced hole extractionand reduced recombination in solar cells.

A Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) team affiliated with the NanosystemsInitiative Munich (NIM) has achieved a breakthrough in light-driven generation ofhydrogen with semiconductor nanocrystals by using a novel molecular shuttle toenhance charge-carrier transport. The amount of solar radiation that reaches theEarth in a year exceeds our current annual energy needs more than 10,000-fold.However, it is not yet possible to store sufficiently high amounts of solar energy in anefficient way. A promising approach is to utilize incoming solar radiation for thephotocatalytic generation of molecular hydrogen (H2) from water. Hydrogen gas is anexcellent energy source, with the product of its combustion being again water, thereby making it free of greenhouse gases.

2014. Journal of Nanoparticle Research. We report here a systematic study of the antibacterial behavior of silvernanoparticles coated with fatty acids (oleic: AgNP-O, linoleic: AgNP-L, and palmitic acids: AgNP-P) in water. We havefound remarkable differences in their capability to penetrate bacteria cell over a broader range of particle size of ~4–96nm compared to previously reported work, and a variable toxicity depending on the particles size. Our results indicatethat silver nanoparticles stabilized with oleic acid showed clear advantages in antibacterial activity, penetration inside thebacteria cells, cytotoxicity, time effectiveness, efficiency, and stability against light.

2014. Journal of Nanoparticle Research. A comprehensive assessment of the environmental risks posed by engineerednanomaterials (ENMs) entering the environment is necessary, due in part to the recent predictions of ENM releasequantities and because ENMs have been identified in waste leachate. The technical complexity of measuring ENM fateand transport processes in all environments necessitates identifying trends in ENM processes. Emerging information onthe environmental fate and toxicity of many ENMs was collected to provide a better understanding of their environmentalimplications. Little research has been conducted on the fate of ENMs in the atmosphere; however, most studies indicatethat ENMs will in general have limited transport in the atmosphere due to rapid settling.

Películas delgadas revelan potencial ocultoPublicada en Nanowerk - Nanotechnology News, 15/08/2014

Naoto Nagaosa and Bohm-Jung Yang from the RIKEN Center for Emergent MatterScience have predicted that thin films of certain iridate compounds could harborunusual ‘topological’ electronic properties that are hidden in regular three-dimensional crystals ("Emergent Topological Phenomena in Thin Films of PyrochloreIridates"). “Topological phenomena in artificial thin films are much richer than thosefound in natural crystals. Even more important, however, is the fact that it is possibleto manipulate those topological properties by tuning various parameters such as filmthickness,” comments Nagaosa.

Diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coatings are an innovative technology, exhibiting the twin properties of mechanicaltoughness and ultralow friction. These features, which are desirable in abrasive environments, have led to thewidespread adoption of DLC films in microelectromechanical systems, such as hard disk drives. But because thesecoatings contain amorphous carbon atoms that produce rough, nanoscale textures, it is difficult to optimize their frictionproperties using classical theories designed for macroscopic objects.

2014. IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering. Metals produced by Severe Plastic Deformation(SPD) offer distinct advantages for medical applications such as orthopedic devices, in part because of theirnanostructured surfaces. We examine the current theoretical foundations and state of knowledge for nanostructuredbiomaterials surface optimization within the contexts that apply to bulk nanostructured metals, differentiating how theirmicrostructures impact osteogenesis, in particular, for Ultrafine Grained (UFG) titanium. Then we identify key gaps in theresearch to date, pointing out areas which merit additional focus within the scientific community. For example, wehighlight the potential of next-generation DNA sequencing techniques (NGS) to reveal gene and non-coding RNA(ncRNA) expression changes induced by nanostructured metals.

2014. Nano Today. For more than 2 billion years, microbes have reigned on ourplanet, evolving or outlasting many obstacles they have encountered. In the 20thcentury, this trend took a dramatic turn with the introduction of antibiotics andvaccines. Nevertheless, since then, microbes have progressively eroded theeffectiveness of previously successful antibiotics by developing resistance, and manyinfections have eluded conventional vaccine design approaches. Moreover, theemergence of resistant and more virulent strains of bacteria has outpaced thedevelopment of new antibiotics over the last few decades.

2014. Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews. Drug delivery to the lungs by inhalationoffers a targeted drug therapy for respiratory diseases. However, the therapeuticefficacy of inhaled drugs is limited by their rapid clearance in the lungs. Carriersproviding sustained drug release in the lungs can improve therapeutic outcomes ofinhaled medicines because they can retain the drug load within the lungs andprogressively release the drug locally at therapeutic levels. This review presents thedifferent formulation strategies developed to control drug release in the lungsincluding microparticles and the wide array of nanomedicines. Large and porousmicroparticles offer excellent aerodynamic properties. Their large geometric sizereduces their uptake by alveolar macrophages, making them a suitable carrier forsustained drug release in the lungs.

2014. ACS Nano. The sense of taste helps humans to obtain information and form apicture of the world by recognizing chemicals in their environments. Over the pastdecade, large advances have been made in understanding the mechanisms of tastedetection and mimicking its capability using artificial sensor devices. However, thedetection capability of previous artificial taste sensors has been far inferior to that ofanimal tongues, in terms of its sensitivity and selectivity. Herein, we developed abioelectronic tongue using heterodimeric human sweet taste receptors for thedetection and discrimination of sweeteners with human-like performance, wheresingle-walled carbon nanotube field-effect transistors were functionalized withnanovesicles containing human sweet taste receptors and used to detect the bindingof sweeteners to the taste receptors.

2014. Semiconductor Science and Technology. Germanium is known to become a direct band gap material whensubject to a biaxial tensile strain of 2% (Vogl et al 1993 Phys. Scr. T49B 476) or uniaxial tensile strain of 4% (Aldaghri etal 2012 J. Appl. Phys. 111 053106). This makes it appealing for the integration of optoelectronics into current CMOStechnology. It is known that the induced strain is highly dependent on the geometry and composition of the whole system(stressors and substrate), leaving a large number of variables to the experimenters willing to realize this transition andjust a trial-and-error procedure. The study in this paper aims at reducing this freedom. We adopt a finite elementapproach to systematically study the elastic strain induced by different configurations of lithographically-created SiGenanostructures on a Ge substrate, by focusing on their composition and geometries.

2014. Progress in Materials Science. Phase change materials (PCMs) used for thestorage of thermal energy as sensible and latent heat are an important class ofmodern materials which substantially contribute to the efficient use and conservationof waste heat and solar energy. The storage of latent heat provides a greater densityof energy storage with a smaller temperature difference between storing andreleasing heat than the sensible heat storage method. Many different groups ofmaterials have been investigated during the technical evolution of PCMs, includinginorganic systems (salt and salt hydrates), organic compounds such as paraffins orfatty acids and polymeric materials, e.g. poly(ethylene glycol).

Globally, we’re throwing out around 5.6 trillion cigarette butts every year, and they’reboth toxic and non-biodegradable. But what if we could convert all of this waste intosomething useful?. A team of researchers from the Seoul National University hasdiscovered that cigarette butt material - cellulose acetate fibre - can be made into acoating needed to produce a device known as a supercapacitor. Supercapacitors arepowerful components used in many different kinds of electronics to store largeamounts of electrical energy. They’re used for backing up batteries in computers andsmartphones, and for storing renewable energy in electric cars and wind turbines.Needless to say, we're going to need to produce a lot of supercapacitors in theforeseeable future, so why not tap into the 766,571 metric tonnes of cigarette buttsthat are disposed of globally every year?.
