Young apes are very curious, constantly explore
the field and show a great deal of interest
for everything that is new or strange to them.
However, when they grow and become adults, since they
already dominate the environment, they completely lose
the curiosity and they are not interested in anything
that they don’t know. According to a theory, Neoteny,
the human being is an ape that managed to keep the
curiosity in age of adult and thanks to that, it could
keep developing without stopping. Whether this theory
is correct or not, it’s certain that the majority of human
beings behave like adult apes. They hardly have
curiosity beyond the familiar and immediate circle, his
neighborhood or his hometown, the city believed as the
center of the world. However, happily, there are people
who are eager, who keep their youth expectantly, with
an active curiosity searching for other horizons. People
to whom that motor of the world, which is love, throw
themselves into foreign place, not to their own, José
Manuel Ramírez is one of these people.
Since he was a child, he read the World Atlas which
was his grandfather’s, and his imagination was inflamed
with a great diversity of races, and even bigger diversity
of customs. That’s probably why he studied Anthropology
adding to his fascination the interest in the society that
surrounds us with achievements, miseries and conflicts.
His love for photography was a natural way of continuing
his anthropologic vocation, facing the society to
investigate in it, reflecting it and fighting with it through
the focus of a lens. Soon he understood that his job was
not only the one that a documentary maker who drafts a
statement of reality, but was also a way of personal and
artistic expression with a greater interest. The study,
practice and self teaching of the grammar of the image,

and of intrinsic language of photography converted love to
occupation, then occupation to passion.
If I think of José Manuel, I picture him in motion, doing
something, pursuing something and I imagine that most
of people who know him would think the same way as I
do. With his cameras on his shoulders, he is always busy
and always affable. Tirelessly travelling across this city as
a reporter of events or journalist of culture during decades
hardened him in contact with all types of situations and
people. At one point he got tired of going around in Seville
as if he was a spinning top and city started to oppress
him, to squeeze him into a prison which was not even
made of gold. Then he proved that he really had the spirit
of adventure and decided to put land and oceans in the
middle and chose the other side of the world. He settled
as a photographer in Japan and there the life rewarded
him for his courage with the best presents that could
have given to him. After a while there, even though he
was no longer travelling alone, his curiosity to the nation
or the future imperial that is already at present, took him
to settle in China with the occasion of the Year of Spain
in China in 2007. During those years we hardly knew of
him, José Manuel had lived in Beijing or Shanghai as one
more. He got to know the Chinese society (so complex and
diverse in customs, races and classes and from outside,
mistakenly seem so homogeneous to us), walking around
the streets and provinces, taking bus to travel, living in a
rented apartment, in one experience that is very different
from the one of the western executive who lives in
serviced apartments and deals with high-ranking officials.
José Manuel looked China in the face and even in
the eyes, placing him to the same level as any of its
inhabitants, the same level of equal to equal, similar to
similar as the characters of his portraits look us. I call
them characters because they all look so. In diversity of
their expressions, each one and all of them give us the
impression that they are about to confide us their own
story, or tell us a folk tale or a recipe of wisdom or simply
a joke. The eyes of the photographer knew how to choose
them through alchemy of the sensibility that he himself

couldn’t explain, but it turned out obvious in the miracle
of instant empathy. The portrait on photography is as
difficult as on painting although it’s less laborious. In
good portraits the face is really the mirror of the soul and
a photographer must to capture it in one second while
a painter does it in weeks or months. The difficulty is
greater when the subject is not posing in a studio but he
is on street, the last thing we want from him is a pose.
The most of the faces of considerable racial diversity,
Uyghur Muslims of Xinjiang, Tibetans, Han Chinese,
look directly to his camera but none of them are posing.
The best thing about these photographs is probably
the affection that allows that humane distance of the
smile, a closeness that José Manuel gets thanks to his
kindheartedness and naturalness down to the most remote
villages or the most populated metropolis.
José Manuel does not show us the face, but the faces
of China. Through them he transmits an anthropological
teaching: the human beings are as different as brothers
are and even though the differences that the climates
had introduced to their characteristics or the color of
their skin are greater, the resemblance is greater because
they all share the same emotions and say same things in
different languages. For these portraits we do not need
to talk, they have the truth written on the face and what
they tell us is so universal that words are not necessary.
However, each face of this mosaic that represents the
most populated country of the world tells us something
different, offers personality, a character. The portrait is an
artistic genre and with this exhibition José Manuel proves
that he masters it. A mastery that is technical and also,
above all, psychological, a gift of the empathy with the
other and the others that comes from a great humanity
that he has and that knew to recognize in this gallery of
exotic and anonymous faces that now visit us from so far
away with unmistakable family resemblance.
