Mark: Que era el Language Show. The Language Show

en Escocia por primera vez.

Carmen: Ah muy bien, interesante.

Mark: Y lo que más me gustó era el hecho de que

hubiera mucha mucha gente que escucha Coffee

Break Spanish que vino a vernos.

Carmen: Ah pero está muy bien. Eso está muy bien.

Mark: Muy bien. Y tú, ¿qué tal?

Carmen: Pues bien, Mark. Estoy muy contenta esta

semana porque espero visita, espero visita de mi

familia.

Mark: ¡Qué bien!

Carmen: Así que estoy…vamos, muy contenta. Muy

contenta.

Mark: Perfecto.

Carmen: Organizándolo todo.

Mark: Y bueno esperemos que siga haciendo sol.

Carmen: Sí que esperemos que tengamos buen tiempo

por lo menos, que no llueva. Yo, si no llueve, ya

soy feliz.

Mark: Perfecto. Well we’re back with another episode

of Coffee Break Spanish and in this episode we

are going to be listening to a phone call between

Rory and María. Of course they are getting ready

to plan their outing, to plan their search for the

buried treasure, the sunken treasure and we are

going to hear what happens in this story. Now

before we get started there are a couple of


things that we need to say. First of all, the fact

that we did indeed speak to many people at the

Scottish Language Show earlier over the

weekend and we were talking to one person in

particular who mentioned that we’ve made a

little bit of a mistake. Not with Spanish.

Carmen: Two mistakes, in fact.

Mark: Two mistakes. Yes, two mistakes. You’re quite

right. Tienes razón.

Carmen: Apologies.

Mark: Sí. The mistake is not really with the Spanish. The

Spanish is fine. It’s more the sort of diving

technology and terminology and everything so

we must apologise for this. Of course we’re

concentrating on a Spanish story here but

perhaps we should mention here that we got

things a little bit wrong with the word popa. Popa

does indeed mean the “stern” but of course we

mentioned that the stern is at the front of the

boat but of course the stern is actually at the…

Carmen: At the back!

Mark: The back of the boat so lo sentimos mucho.

Carmen: Lo sentimos, oyentes.

Mark: The other thing that we should mention, and of

course we wouldn’t expect anyone to take

instructions on anything but Spanish from these

episodes…

Carmen: No intentéis esto en casa por favor.


Mark: Yeah, don’t try this one at home. Apparently the

oxygen in the diving tanks is kind of important

because it can’t really be oxygen apparently

because after a certain depth oxygen becomes

poisonous so as we said we hope nobody is

going to attempt any of this at home. It’s very

much a story and we do apologise for this but

let’s get on with today’s episode.

Carmen: Muy bien. Vamos a por él.

Mark: As usual we’ll begin by listening to our recording

of the phone call between Rory and María.

Rory: María ¿cómo estás? Perdona que te

llame tan tarde, ¿estabas durmiendo

ya?

María: ¡Hola Rory! Yo bien, aún despierta,

estoy viendo una peli que dan por la

tele… ¡es de espías! Mis padres se han

ido a la cama ya. ¿Va todo bien?

R: Sí, sí, todo va bien, pero tenemos un

pequeño problema con salir el

martes. He estado leyendo el parte

meteorológico por internet, y dice que

el martes a las 13 horas se levantará

viento de tramontana, así que me

parece mejor esperar al miércoles a ver

si mejora el tiempo.


M: Hombre, ¡pues me parece bien esperar,

la verdad! Mañana podemos

comprobarlo otra vez, pero si continúan

anunciando vientos será mejor dejarlo

para otro día.

R: Yo esta semana tengo carta blanca en el

trabajo, Consuelo me dio tres días

libres, pero aún no gasté ninguno, así

que puedo escoger miércoles, jueves y

viernes. ¿Tú tendrás problemas para

cambiar el día de fiesta en el trabajo?

M: No, no te preocupes…me lo monto

bien.

R: ¿Te lo…? ¿Te lo montas bien?

M: Jaja, sí es una expresión, “montárselo

bien” quiere decir sacar buen provecho

de las situaciones. Por ejemplo: ¡qué

bien te lo montas Rory, estás en

Mallorca de vacaciones!

R: Aah, vale, ya lo entiendo. Entonces ¿sí

que puedes cambiar tu día de fiesta?

M: Exacto, chico listo.

R: Estupendo.

M: He estado estudiando el mapa para

llegar hasta allí con el barco, creo que

será bastante fácil, lo único que nos


falta es que haga buen tiempo y el mar

se porte bien.

R: ¡Qué bien! Aún no me creo que tengas

el carnet de patrón de embarcaciones

de recreo…

M: Nunca te lo dije porque no surgió la

conversación, supongo. Es decir no

es ningún secreto que me encanta

navegar en verano.

R: Eso sí que lo sabía, pero pensaba yo

que salías a navegar con tus amigos, o

con tu familia, y ¡nunca imaginé que tú

eras la conductora!

M: ¡Pues sí! Me encanta encontrar calas a

las que no se puede llegar a pie. Esas

son mis pequeñas aventuras de verano,

normalmente. Y ahora que la barca ya

está arreglada podemos hacer alguna

excursión, ¡aparte de ir a buscar el

tesoro, claro!

R: Eres increíble, María. Nunca dejarás de

sorprenderme. Te dejo que continúes

viendo la película, nos vemos mañana

por la mañana y hablamos con calma.

M: Vale guapo, un beso muy grande y que

descanses.


R: Un beso guapísima, hasta mañana…

Carmen: Muy bien. La cosa se pone interesante, Mark.

Mark: Sí. Sí, finalmente.

Carmen: ¡Finalmente!

Mark: Después de veinticuatro lecciones, sí.

Carmen: Pero, y todo lo que hemos aprendido ¿qué?

Mark: Sí. Un montón de cosas.

Carmen: Claro.

Mark: Un montón de cosas sobre el idioma español.

Carmen: Sí.

Mark: Pero no sobre el buceo, no.

Carmen: No sobre el buceo, no.

Mark: Ok, let’s have a listen to our English explanation

of this episode. In this episode we're

eavesdropping on a telephone conversation

between Rory and María. Rory has called María

late at night and he begins by asking her if she

was asleep already. María has actually been

watching a spy film on TV, but her parents are

already in bed. As we know, they've been

planning to go in search for the sunken treasure

and they're hoping to sail out to the location of

the wreck on Tuesday. The reason for Rory's call


is in fact to let María know that it's possible

there's going to be a bit of a problem:

Todo va bien, pero tenemos un pequeño

problema con salir el martes.

Mark: It's likely that Tuesday is going to be difficult for

their diving adventure because according to the

weather forecast, it looks like on Tuesday

afternoon there's going to be an increase in the

amount of wind, so he's thinking that it'll be

better to wait to see if the weather is better on

Wednesday. María agrees that it would be better

to wait, and suggests that they should check the

forecast again tomorrow. Rory has three days off

and hasn't used any of them so they could

potentially go out on Wednesday, Thursday or

Friday. He asks María if it would be difficult for

her to change her days off, but this doesn't seem

to pose too much of a problem. María will sort

things out - she uses an interesting expression -

me lo monto bien - and we'll come back to that a

little later on. María has been studying the map

and she doesn't envisage any problems in

finding the exact location - the only thing they

need is for the weather to be good and for it not

to be too rough. Rory is happy with this, and he


still can't believe that María happens to be

qualified in skippering a boat.

Aún no me creo que tengas el carnet de patrón

Mark: María laughs - she hadn't told him simply

because the topic had never come up in

conversation. It's no secret that she loves going

out in the boat during the summer. Rory knew

this but he thought she was just going out in the

boat with a friend or someone else in her family

skippering the boat. María explains she loves

going off in search of coves which can't be

reached on foot, and now that the boat is

repaired they can do the same - in addition, of

course, to looking for the treasure. Rory finishes

the conversation by saying that she will never

stop surprising him. He leaves her to watch her

film and they'll talk again tomorrow.

Mark: Muy bien. Ok let’s go back to that expression me

lo monto bien. It’s quite a tricky expression

montárselo bien, the whole concept of


montárselo bien because I would say there are

two main ways in which this is used. First of all in

the context of this particular part of the dialogue,

María says me lo monto bien. No te preocupes,

me lo monto bien. So I think there are a couple

of situations here. Two different situations that

are very similar but one’s general and one’s more

specific. Carmen, can you help us with this?

Carmen: I’m going to give you a general example, ok?

Mark: Ok.

Carmen: Let’s see what we come up with. Solo trabaja tres

días a la semana pero tiene un buen sueldo así

que se lo ha montado bien.

Mark: Ok. Se lo ha montado bien. Let’s go through this

exactly as Carmen has explained there. So solo

trabaja tres días a la semana “he only works three

days per week” pero tiene un buen sueldo “but

he’s got a good salary” se lo ha montado bien

“he has done well for himself”.

Carmen: Yes.

Mark: He has put it all together well. Se lo ha montado

bien. Ok so he’s done well for himself, he’s doing

well for himself, he’s living the good life. That

kind of idea.

Carmen: Yeah, yeah.

Mark: So that is the general idea, he’s doing well out of

the situation. Let’s think about a specific idea for

example in the text we’re seeing that María is

going to sort things out for getting the time off in


order to do the dive. And she says me lo monto

bien. No te preocupes, me lo monto bien. “I’m

on top of things”.

Carmen: That’s another very good example. When it has

to do with time, for example to arrange times or

to sort out your timetable, that’s a very good

example. Also we were saying earlier on that

you’ve been in a conference this weekend, let’s

say you had to do one of the speeches for

example and I tell you “Mark, ¿a qué hora tienes

la conferencia? ¿Necesitas ayuda?” Y tú me dices

“no, tranquila. Lo tengo bien montado.” That

means you’ve got everything in place.

Mark: Everything’s in place, everything’s covered. I’m

on top of things.

Carmen: Yes.

Mark: Ok. So that’s nice because it’s a slightly different

version of it but it’s still the same context using

the verb montar. Lo tengo bien montado ¿has

dicho?

Carmen: Sí.

Mark: So lo tengo bien montado. “I have” literally “got it

well mounted”. Montado in that kind of sense. So

lo tengo bien montado. Could I also say me lo

monto bien?

Carmen: Sí. También.

Mark: Me lo estoy montando bien.

Carmen: Sí.


Mark: So we can use the same expression but different

grammatical contexts.

Carmen: Yes.

Mark: Me lo monto bien, me lo estoy montando bien,

me lo he montado bien.

Carmen: Perfecto.

Mark: Different ways. So it’s a really really useful phrase

and of course we’re using here me lo monto bien

but se lo monta bien, nos lo montamos bien y

todo.

Carmen: Todas las personas, sí. Muy bien.

Mark: Perfecto. Ok so let’s now go back to the

beginning of our text and we’ll listen to the first

section now.

Mark: Ok. Vamos a volver al inicio del texto y vamos a

hablar un poco de todo. When the phone rings

María answers and Rory asks:

María ¿cómo estás? Perdona que te


ya?

Mark: So “how are you?” Perdona que te

llame tan tarde, so “sorry to call so late” but look

at the interesting subjunctive there. Perdona que

te llame tan tarde, “excuse that I call you”. So

you’re doing the excusing, I’m doing the calling.

“Excuse that I call you so late”. Perdona que te

llame tan tarde, “were you already asleep?” Let’s

hear that again, “were you already asleep?”

Carmen: ¿Estabas durmiendo ya?

Mark: Literally “were you already sleeping?” ¿Estabas

durmiendo ya? “Were you already sleeping?” So

María answers:

¡Hola Rory! Yo bien, aún despierta, estoy viendo

una película que dan por la tele… ¡es de espías!

Mark: So “I’m fine” Yo bien, aún despierta, “I’m still

awake”. Despertarse is the verb “to wake up”.

Despierta is an adjective form of that. Aún


despierta, “I’m still awake” and what’s María

doing?

Estoy viendo una película que dan por la tele…

¡es de espías!

Mark: So “I’m watching a film that” literally “they’re

giving on the tv”. So dar is the verb that’s used “to

give”, in that sense “to show” when they’re

putting on the television. A film that is being

shown on the television. “I’m watching a film

which is on the television”. And what is this film

about?

Carmen: De espías.

Mark: It’s a spy movie. Ok, and then she goes on:

Mis padres se han ido a la cama ya. ¿Va todo

bien?

Mark: So “my parents have already gone to bed. Is

everything ok?” ¿Va todo bien?

Sí, sí, todo va bien, pero tenemos un pequeño

problema con salir el martes.

Mark: So “everything’s ok but we do have a little

problem” con salir el martes “a problem about


going out on Tuesday”. Of course they’re

planning their dive for the Tuesday. Un problema

con algo.

Carmen: O con alguien.

Mark: O con alguien yeah. A problem with something

or someone as Carmen says. Now, obviously in

English we talk about a problem with something,

there’s a problem with my room, there’s a

problem with the key or whatever but the

interesting thing for me here is that you can also

say there’s a problem with plus an infinitive.

Tenemos un pequeño problema con salir el

martes. Can you give us some other examples of

that?

Carmen: ¿Hay algún problema con venir mañana un

poquito más temprano? Por ejemplo.

Mark: So “is there any problem about coming

tomorrow?” and of course in English we would

probably use “is there any problem about

coming?” using that gerund, the -ing form. “Is

there any problem with coming tomorrow?” or “is

it a problem for you to come tomorrow?” I

suppose the point here is that it’s actually easier

in Spanish.

Carmen: For once!

Mark: Sí. For once! ¿Hay un problema con venir

mañana? Carmen, ¿se puede decir también “hay

un problema con que vengas mañana?”


Carmen: Perfecto. Se puede usar el subjuntivo también

con el mismo sentido, mismo significado, sí.

Mark: But we don’t need to!

Carmen: No.

Mark: It’s always good when there’s a situation when we

don’t need to use the subjunctive. Ok so con,

una problema con. Just remember that it’s always

a problema con plus something or someone or

indeed here a verb and let’s stick it in the

infinitive.

Carmen: Infinitive.

Mark: Always a good thing. So tenemos un pequeño

problema con salir el martes - why is there a

problem about coming or going out on Tuesday?

He estado leyendo el parte meteorológico por

internet, y dice que el martes a la una se

levantará viento de Tramuntana, así que me

parece mejor esperar al miércoles a ver si mejora

el tiempo.

Mark: Ok he estado leyendo el parte meteorológico

por internet, “i’ve been reading the weather

forecast” ultimately “on the internet” y dice que

el martes a la una, “at one o’clock”.

Carmen: A las 13 horas.

Mark: A las 13 horas, “at one o’clock” se levantará

viento de Tramuntana, now literally “there will


rise wind from the Tramuntana and the

Tramuntana is…

Carmen: The mountain of Mallorca.

Mark: The mountain range in Mallorca. So the

Tramuntana wind will pick up, will rise up, así que

me parece mejor “so it seems to me to be better”

esperar al miércoles “to wait to Wednesday” a

ver si mejora el tiempo “to see if the weather

gets better”. Ok so what does María then go on

to say?

Hombre, ¡pues me parece bien esperar, la

verdad! Mañana podemos comprobarlo otra vez,

pero si continúan anunciando vientos será mejor

dejarlo para otro día.

Mark: So hombre, “well” ¡pues me parece bien esperar,

la verdad! “It seems to me to be a good idea to

wait, to tell the truth”.

Carmen: To be honest.

Mark: To be honest, yeah. Mañana podemos

comprobarlo otra vez, “tomorrow we can check it

again”, “we’ll check out the weather forecast

again” pero si continúan anunciando vientos “but

if they continue to announce winds”, “if they say

that the winds are going to keep up”, será mejor

dejarlo para otro día, “it will be better to leave it

for another day”.


Yo esta semana tengo carta blanca en el trabajo,

Consuelo me dio tres días libres, pero…aún no

he gastado ninguno, así que puedo escoger

miércoles, jueves y viernes.

Mark: Ok so yo esta semana - this is Rory talking of

course - yo esta semana tengo carta blanca en el

trabajo, “I” literally “have a white sheet of paper”.

Carmen: Is there an expression for this in English?

Mark: In English we very often use the French

expression carte blanche.

Carmen: Ah ok.

Mark: “I’ve got a free card in my work” doesn’t really

work like that. “I have got all the time I need this

week”, “I’m off work”. Yo esta semana tengo carta

blanca en el trabajo and he explains: “Consuela

has given me” or “gave me three days off but I’ve

not used any of them yet.” Aún no he gastado

ninguno, así que “so” puedo escoger “I can

choose” miércoles, jueves y viernes, “I can

choose Wednesday, Thursday and Friday”.

¿Tú tendrás problemas para cambiar el día de

Mark: “Will you have problems to change the day of

holiday in the work?” So “will it be ok for you to

change your day off at work?”


No, no te preocupes, me lo monto bien.

Mark: So there is our expression. “No, don’t worry

about it. I’m on top of things. I’ll get it sorted out.

Don’t worry, I’ll work it out.” But this is an

expression that Rory has never heard before. He

says ¿montar? and María goes on to explain.

Sí. Es una expresión, “montárselo bien” quiere

decir sacar buen provecho de las situaciones. Por

ejemplo: ¡qué bien te lo montas Rory, estás en


Mark: So as María has explained, es una expresión, “it’s

an expression” “montárselo bien” “it means to

take good advantage out of the situation”. Not

that it’s a bad situation or just a general situation.

Sacar buen provecho de las situaciones. “To take

advantage of things”, “to fall on your feet”, that

kind of idea.

Carmen: Ok.

Mark: Por ejemplo: qué bien te lo montas Rory, “for

example, how lucky you are”, “you’re on top of

things”.

Carmen: “You’re on holiday”.

Mark: “You’re on holiday in Mallorca”, “you’re living the

good life” ¡Qué bien te lo montas Rory! So now

Rory has understood this.


Aah, vale, ya lo entiendo. Entonces ¿sí que

puedes cambiar tu día de fiesta?

Mark: So “now I understand”. Vale, ya lo entiendo. So

“yes you will be able to change your holiday day

without a problem”.

Exacto, chico listo.

Mark: “Well done, clever boy!”

Estupendo.

Mark: Ok so that’s the first part of our text.

Mark: So the preparations continue and María goes on:

Mark: Interesting subjunctives here. Let’s talk a little bit

about them. He estado estudiando el mapa “I

have been studying the map” para llegar hasta

allí con el barco “to find out how to…”

Carmen: Get to the point.

Mark: Yeah, to that point: hasta allí. “As far as there”.

Con el barco, “to get there with the boat”. Creo

que será bastante fácil, “I think it will be quite

easy” lo único que nos falta “the only thing that’s

missing” or “that we need” es que haga buen

tiempo “is that it is good weather” or “it does

good weather” literally y el mar se porte bien

“and the sea behaves itself”. Now let’s talk about

why these are in the subjunctive. Our trigger

here for the subjunctive is lo único que nos falta -

“the only thing that’s missing” and this introduces

an element of doubt because we don’t actually

know if it’s going to be nice weather or if the sea

is going to behave itself. So lo único que nos

falta es que haga buen tiempo. Lo más

importante es que haga buen tiempo because

we don’t know and therefore there’s an element

of doubt and that’s why we use the subjunctive

here. Lo único que nos falta es que haga buen


tiempo y el mar se porte bien. Carmen, ¿puedes

darnos otro ejemplo de esto? El único o lo único,

más bien. Lo único que nos falta es…

Carmen: Lo único que nos falta es que seas puntual

mañana.

Mark: Ok so “the only thing that we need”, “the only

thing that’s missing is the fact that you may or

may not be on time tomorrow”. Ok, why is it we

always come up with…?

Carmen: I don’t mean anything with this, ok Mark? I’m just

saying an example.

Mark: We always come up with things about

punctuality when we’re talking about examples

here. Anyway, let’s move on. Rory still can’t

believe that María has a licence to drive a boat.

¡Qué bien! Aún no me creo que tengas el carnet

de patrón de embarcaciones de recreo.

Mark: And there’s another subjunctive in there. Aún no

me creo que “I don’t believe it to myself”. No me

creo que tengas el carnet de patrón de

embarcaciones de recreo, so “I don’t believe that

you’ve got the permit”.

Carmen: The driving licence.

Mark: Yeah. The licence for skippering recreational

boat. Quite technical there. “I don’t believe that


you are allowed to skipper a boat professionally”

as it were.

Nunca te lo dije porque no surgió la

conversación, supongo.

Mark: So “I’ve never told you because the conversation

never arose about that I suppose”.

Es decir, no es ningún secreto que me encanta

navegar en verano.

Mark: “I mean, it’s no secret that I love going out on the

boat in the summer” however Rory’s not ever

really fully understood that it was María who was

driving the boat.

Mark: Eso sí que lo sabía, “that I did know”. I love that:

eso sí que. Eso sí que - in this case eso sí que lo

sabía. “That I did know” or eso sí que es, “that

really is”.

Carmen: Eso sí que no me esperaba - another one.


Mark: Eso sí que no me esperaba, sí. But the thing that I

always think is funny is that it makes me think of

“socks” in English. S - O - C - K sock. Eso sí que lo

sabía.

Carmen: That’s a good trick to remember this.

Mark: I always think about that…anyway! Eso sí que lo

sabía - “that I really did know” pero pensaba que

salías a navegar con tus amigos, “but I thought

you went out on the boat with your friends or

with your family and I never imagined that it was

you who was actually driving the boat”.

¡Pues sí! Me encanta encontrar calas a las que no

se puede llegar a pie.

Mark: “Well, yes”. Me encanta encontrar calas “I love

finding coves” - las calas de Mallorca son muy

famosas.

Carmen: Hay muchas y son muy famosas sí y muy bonitas.

Mark: Muy bonitas, sí. Me encanta encontrar calas a las

que no se puede llegar a pie. “I love finding

coves to which one cannot get to by foot” so “I

love finding coves that are unreachable by foot”.

Esas son mis pequeñas aventuras de verano,

normalmente.


Mark: “Those are my normal summer adventures”. Not

like this year - she’s having a bit of a different

summer adventure.

Y ahora que la barca ya está arreglada podemos

hacer alguna excursión, ¡aparte de ir a buscar el

tesoro, claro!

Mark: So now that the boat is already sorted out, it’s

fixed, podemos hacer alguna excursión, “we

could go for an excursion”, “we could go out on

the boat” - of course that is apart from going

looking for sunken treasure.

Carmen: Of course.

Mark: Of course.

Eres increíble, María. Nunca dejarás de

sorprenderme.

Mark: “You’re incredible, María. You will never stop

surprising me”. Nunca dejarás de sorprenderme

Dejar de hacer algo we’ve spoken about that

before, “to stop doing something”. Nunca

dejarás de sorprenderme, “you will never stop

surprising me”.


Te dejo que continúes viendo la película, nos

vemos mañana por la mañana y hablamos con

Mark: So another interesting subjunctive here. Te dejo

que continúes viendo la película. That’s actually

quite a tricky construction there. Te dejo que, “I’ll

leave you to do something”. In English we would

say “I’ll leave you to watch your film” but of

course that infinitive becomes a personal

infinitive: “I’ll leave you to watch the film”. And in

Spanish we can’t do that because “I’ll leave you”

then it’s you that’s going to be watching the film

so there’s a change of subject therefore “I leave

that you watch the film”. It’s just the same way as

quiero que…

Carmen: Vengas a comer.

Mark: Vengas or whatever so “I want that you come”. “I

leave that you continue”. Te dejo que continúes

viendo la película, “I’ll leave you to watch the film,

we’ll see each other tomorrow” nos vemos

mañana por la mañana “tomorrow morning” in

fact, y hablamos con calma “and we’ll speak”,

literally “with calm”, “have a calm conversation

about everything”.

Vale guapo, un beso muy grande y que

descanses.


Mark: So “ok, handsome, a very big kiss and may you

rest.” Que descanses - “have a good sleep”, “have

a good rest”.

R: Un beso guapísima, hasta mañana.

¡Buenas noches!

M: ¡Buenas noches!

Mark: We know that bit. “A kiss, gorgeous. Until

tomorrow. Good night”. Yeah, that bit is

straightforward enough. Vamos entonces a

volver a escuchar todo el texto.

Carmen: De acuerdo.

Carmen: ¡Todo a la perfección!
