As in the World Cup South Africa 2010, the Ecuadorian flower growing industry has undergone an uncertain,
passionate semester with unexpected results and surprises, but in the end very pleasant ones.
Both events leave us great learning and reflections that we must not forget and must always keep in mind, following are some of them. The final results are not guaranteed, they do not depend on individual actors nor on their fame, their economic power or on the size of these actors: a bad start or an unfavorable situation is no limitation in order to reach success. Overconfidence can be fatal; logic is not always decisive; the best results are always obtained when a team participates; when within a team what matters most is the team’s interest above the individual ones the team can go far; and the sacrifice, the effort, the initiative and humbleness will always be the common denominator of winning teams. At present we are getting ready for the 2010 – 2011 campaign, possibly we will evidence that there is a real flower deficit, nevertheless we must not be blind to the European economic and political crisis, that unlike previous crisis where the European Community leaders only dealt

with economic matters, now there is an important tendency in favor of abandoning the EURO and going back to their own currencies. Surely this will cause important structural adjustments both among the buyers, as among the producers, and it will be then, when we will regret not having a clear, defined, strategic and effective state policy for the Ecuadorian export sector.
In this FLOWERS 2010 Fair to be carried out in Moscow, I want to wish all the representatives of Ecuadorian flower growing businesses there, the best of success, may your participation and the results to be obtained guarantee that our country remains as the number one provider of quality flowers; and for the visitors to the Fair, old customers and new entrepreneurs, to have the absolute security that by preferring the Ecuadorian flower, you are guaranteeing the viability of your investments.
Finally, greetings and best wishes of success in your future activities for all those business people that have decided to end your participation within the Flower Growing Industry, as for those of us that remain and for those who will come to be part of it in the future, we have all been an important part of the history of this great Industry which has never stopped at the face of adversity.

Colombia
Anyone attempting to reconstruct the history of Colombian
floriculture, of how a country in South America - remote at best
and largely unknown to many Americans and Europeans - in less
than a decade became the world’s second largest flower exporter
after Holland will soon come across one name: Peter Hannaford.
Founder and leader of some of the most important and successful
flower exporting companies in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, Peter is
widely known on the international floriculture scene.
by Marta Pizano
Just recently, FCI enjoyed the opportunity of interviewing Peter, who
good heartedly shared some fantastic anecdotes and facts, the best
of which we are bringing together in this issue. “How did it all start,
why floriculture in a country with no seasons, where flowers bloomed
all year long and people bought them only for special occasions?”
Somerset to South America
Born in Colombia of a British father and a mother who came from
a traditional Colombian family in the city of Cali, Peter always
loved plants; he was forever curious about what made them grow,
how and when they bloomed and produced fruit. With his father’s
encouragement he left for England after finishing high school
and entered Somerset Agricultural College to study commercial
horticulture. This included working over the summer in a fruit farm
where he started learning how the horticultural business worked.
Back home, Peter started looking for work; it was the mid 1960s.
Unable to find anything that truly interested him in his hometown he
ran an ad in the paper. This was answered by Alberto Williamson,
owner of a dairy farm near Bogotá, Colombia’s capital city and
located in the Andes Mountains at 2,640 m above sea level. Around
Bogotá stretches a 350,000 ha plateau with a climate that couldn’t be
better suited for producing temperate flowers like roses, carnations
and chrysanthemums. Aside from milk, Williamson produced gladioli
for the local market under the name Sun Valley Farms, a company
that no longer exists.
Broader horizons
Soon, young and ambitious Peter found that the local market had
become easily saturated and decided to look for new opportunities.
What if he could export flowers to countries in the north during their
wintertime when they had no production (or production was too
expensive)? What other flower types could be produced? Who would
buy them? He went to the American Embassy where a program to
help small companies export their products was in place; he was
directed to “Jardines del Ecuador” a company operating near Quito
which was already exporting chrysanthemums and carnations to
the US (these were the first flower exporters in South America).
It belonged to ECL - Ecuadorian Corporation Ltd. and one of the
partners was an American wholesaler, William Sieck, whose son still
runs the business in Pennsylvania.
Peter wrote to James MacGuinness, the company president who

immediately became interested and made the trip to Colombia,
appearing at Sun Valley very early one morning in 1965. He offered
to become associates with Alberto and Peter to develop the flower
farm to 10 ha, growing marguerite daisies which, in his opinion,
would have the best market. Although initially enthusiastic about the
idea, Alberto Williamson declined the offer; and Peter left – to work
for James MacGuinness at Jardines del Ecuador.
“The three years I spent there were a real learning experience,” says
Peter. “The best technical consultants available regularly visited the
farm and that provided me with incredibly valuable schooling; further,
I was able to make contacts in the world of floriculture that later were
to prove crucial.” Among them were Robert Langhans, renowned
plant physiologist from Cornell University and author of several
books and Paul Daum, one of the pioneers of chrysanthemum
production and marketing.
He was also introduced to Colombian brothers Bernardo and Camilo
Herrera, who asked him to work for them. “I said I would only go
into business with them if we became partners,” he reveals, “and
thus, together with Edgar Wells (another pioneer of British origin),
Jardines de los Andes was born in 1969, each of us (the Herreras,
Edgar and Peter) holding one third of the company shares.” To this
day, Jardines de los Andes remains an exporter of some of the
best quality chrysanthemums and other flowers in the world. The
company comprises seven production farms totaling over 100 ha
and was one of the companies earning a “Stratospheric Protection
Ozone Award” from the US EPA in May of 2007. Their marketing
name in the US is Nature’s Flowers.
Temptation to move
At the same time another development was taking shape close by;
Floramérica, originally an initiative of Thomas Kehler and Hartman
Brown, two Americans who had arrived in Colombia some years
before to work in Cali. With them worked young David Cheever
a Colorado State University floriculture graduate who is also
recognized for his great contributions to Colombian floriculture.
Floramérica grew at a very fast pace; soon, Peter was receiving
tempting and insistent offers from them and finally could not refuse.
He sold his participation in Jardines and joined Floramérica in 1972.
“It was a fantastic experience, we really put together a dream team,”
he says recalling Pedro Fornaguera, Juan Manuel Brigard and Rafael
Montes. “We were assisted by the best experts, especially Dr Abe
Halevy, with whom I developed a 30-year long working relationship
and to whom I owe a lot of what I know today.”
Peter remained at Floramérica for 18 years, during which time the
company flourished and lead the way for the many other flower
exporters that followed, both in Colombia and Ecuador. Floramérica
is now part of the Dole Fruit Company’s investment in Colombia;
they bought a large share of Colombian floriculture some 10 to 15
years ago. The Dole Fruit Company has reduced its production area
in Colombia recently, but the group still farms around 300 ha. The
company changed its name to Americaflor, they produce many flower
types and traded under the name Sunburst Farms in the USA.
New challenge
In the early 1990s Peter felt it was time to look to new horizons. He
had been in touch with Peter Ullrich, who had tried to start a flower
exporting business in Peru but had been unsuccessful. With Peter,
they tried again and set up a thriving business which was however
short lived, as it fell victim to guerrilla activities of the time which
destroyed the premises killing several employees in the process.
“Our lives were saved by coincidence,” Peter declares. “We were
staying at the farm at the time, but on that particular day we were
held up in Lima getting some errands finished.”
Peter Ullrich decided to move what was left of the Peruvian farm
to Ecuador, near Quito, where conditions are quite similar to those
around Bogotá. Peter Hannaford agreed to stay with him for as long
as it took to get 50 ha of roses into full operation. It took them a
mere three years. Peter Ullrich’s company in Ecuador is Esmeralda
Farms. He now also has large farms trading under the same name in
Colombia and Costa Rica producing a wide range of flower types.
Flying solo
Free to become independent, Peter Hannaford started his own
company Elite Flowers, with 0.5 ha of Meilland varieties and another
half of various origins. During his time with Peter Ullrich he had met
Hans Evers, of German breeding house Rosen Tantau and now he
contacted him again. They reached an agreement whereby Peter
would help in selecting rose varieties that were best suited for
Colombia and Ecuador. At the time, Tantau only had a few varieties,
they were mostly known for Osiana. Hans Evers gave him 5 ha worth
of rose plants as advance payment for plant sales and the company
set sail.
“It’s what I like most,” says Peter referring to selection of new
varieties. Today, they receive some 200 selections from Germany
each year that they run trials with. If things run smoothly, they will
be introducing about four of these commercially after three years.
“It’s easy to make mistakes,” he replies when asked about the tricks
of the trade, “introducing a bad variety takes no time but you will
pay for it for a long time after.” Some of their varieties, for example,
became known for their weakness to Peronospora attacks (downy
mildew). They have really worked hard to resolve this problem.
Peter Hannaford is also very much into biological (organic) issues,
bio-controls, environmental management, plant soil and water
relations. He is also into trying new things like growing alstroemerias
in the field, which is not the usual practice in Colombia and Ecuador.
“We use mycorrhizae, we work with the soil, not against it. The
results are wonderful,” he says recalling that when he first tried to
grow alstroemerias many years ago, they would flower too soon, on
very short stems.
Aside from selection and breeding, Peter is still a flower exporter, who
immensely enjoys exhibiting and participating in industry contests
such as those conducted by SAF (the Society of American Florists).
“It helps the business and it also gives us first-hand experience of
the performance of our own varieties.” He produces mostly roses,
but also alstroemeria and some foliage.
What are the essentials of successful flower exporting? “Having
good people working for you,” he declares, “and making sure they
are happy to work for you.” Examples of this are; the day-care centre
and primary school for his employees children that operates on one
of the farms in Colombia (in what was once the farm house); the
hundreds of lunches served by the company to school children at
the village close to one of the farms in Ecuador; how rarely people
under his employment leave the company (at all levels); simply
talking to any of his employees and hearing the respect they have
for “Don Peter”.

Reflections
What would he do differently, if offered the chance? “Nothing, I like
to think. Although seeing the extraordinary success of Jardines de
los Andes will always make me wonder what it would have been like
to remain with them,” he says adding that his friendship with the
Herrera brothers has passed the test of time extremely well.
How does he see the present and the future? Peter replies,
“Floriculture in Colombia and Ecuador will prevail; this is a tough
time, it’s true, especially in Colombia due to the Colombian peso
losing so much value against the US dollar over the last few years.
But I am confident that things will change. And hard periods such
as this make you look for new markets, no matter how small or
demanding they are, become more efficient, ask yourself how you
can do better”.
After all these years, what is his favorite variety? “That which sells
well!” he replies with a laugh and then more seriously, ‘Sweetness’, a
white rose with a faint pink blush. All the companies Peter Hannford
has been involved with are very well known exporters, internationally
recognized for their quality, care of the environment and standards
of worker protection. He is associated by many with the “cream of
the crop”.
An interesting anecdote
When accompanying him on business trips, Peter’s ex-wife Maria
Fernanda got into the habit of buying fashion and home decoration
magazines to look at the flowers used by designers. One time,
while he was still working for Floramérica, Maria Fernanda noticed
that several brides appearing in an important fashion magazine
carried simple bridal bouquets made of calla lilies, at the time an
old-fashioned flower that had been little used since the 1950s. She
pointed this out to Peter on the flight home. The next day he had
ordered the soccer field at the farm to be temporarily cleared and
covered with plastic and was going around in his truck picking wild
calla lilies from ditches and swamps close by. He managed to gather
enough plants to fill the field and a few months later was selling
calla lilies – before anyone else had even thought about them – at
US$2 per stem. “They didn’t keep the price too long. Soon after the
breeders woke up, we were growing commercial cultivars, and the
workers were playing football again. But it was well worth it.”
Empresa perteneciente a ECL –Ecuadorian Corporation

Al mismo tiempo estaba tomando forma otro proyecto muy cercano;
finalmente no pudo declinar.
llevan a cabo pruebas.
fincas en Colombia (en lo que una vez fue la casa de hacienda);
“Don Peter”.
Reflexiones
¿Qué haría él diferente, de serle ofrecida esa oportunidad? “Me

“No mantuvieron

incrementos salariales desproporcionados o no técnicos.
Entrevista
Entrevista a Gonzalo Luzuriaga, Presidente del Directorio de EXPOFLORES saliente
Which were the achievements that gave you the greatest
satisfactions?
Without a doubt the strengthening of the union; we grew substantially
regarding the number of partners, despite the crisis and all, and
our national and international image improved a lot, both for our
participation in fairs, as for the successful projects handled by us
within the Association, such as those dealing with associativity; the
Path of Flowers; the Flower Growing School; the important strategic
alliance with UNICEF in favor of the eradication of child labor; the
significant improvement of relationships with the communities;
the permanent worry of issues current and of interest such as the
construction of the new airport for Quito and the different adjustments
for the airport in Latacunga; or the organizational study of Expoflores
which resulted in the restructuring of some areas.
Is there anything that might have left a sour feeling by not
having been able to conclude it?
We would have liked to achieve more on the matter concerning
the new airport for Quito, to have certainties, and that the planned
timelines are met. This was something that went beyond our hands.
We continue to work on it, particularly in what has to do with the area
of perishable products.
Any advice for the new Board?
Not an advice, but a comment. Maybe what is more important: to
further consolidate the union. Let us remember that there are still
many flower producing farms not part of Expoflores and of them
we know very little or have no influence on them, and upon their
behavior the future of the sector depends a great deal, both in the
national and international scope.
A mistake or misbehavior of any of them will cause repercussions
on the entire sector.
How do you see the future of Ecuadorian flower growing?
As long as clear rules, legal certainty and incentives towards the
productive sector exist, the future of Ecuadorian flower growing can
be promissory, having in mind that our flowers are the best in the
world thanks to the unrepeatable geographical conditions we have.
What always will worry us is not being able to directly handle costs,
due to external or beyond our control influences, such as the latest,
for example, the eruption of a volcano in Island, or nearer ones, such
as disproportionate or non-technical salary increases.
Nevertheless, I trust the demonstrated and proven ability of all the
flower growing friends and colleagues, who surely will know how to
handle things during difficult times.

No hemos sabido

Now that you are in charge of the union, which are the first
actions you wish to undertake?
The first thing that we have set forth to do, is to evaluate all our
actions and without taking away any credit from actions carried
out by Expoflores, try to organize our programs from what is truly
urgent, to what is important and what is interesting. This will allow
us to have a better view of where we are headed to and thus a more
effective action plan.
How do you see the future of flower growing in Ecuador and
the world?
Flower growing in the world will continue its already traced path and
those that consume flowers will continue to do so and will keep
on buying them. The question is what, to whom and how will they
continue doing it. I believe that Ecuador must see North America
as our natural market for flowers. They are more than 300 million
people (if we include Canada) 4 hours away, with a very high
standard of living and with a still very modest consumption per
capita. We have not known how to sell in these and other places,
we have lacked decision and we have given up placing interest in
them, to be involved or to enter firmly into an integral commercial
structure. For over 25 years, we have used and assumed the same
traditional schemes and channels in our business, as the only valid
ones and the only ones in force. We must think of innovative ways of
transporting our products and of commercializing them. Europe will
continue to prefer us, as long as Africa does not manage to emulate
our products importantly and as long as freights do not make
buyers stop preferring us. Once again, freights are an important
point to be analyzed. Regarding Russia, our presence within these
ex USSR markets, will always be interesting because of the marked
differentiation that this market has upon the product it wishes to
buy. Here, we also have to try to get there faster and in a more direct
manner.
According to your experience, which are the strongest
weaknesses of the Ecuadorian flower growing businesses, and
which are their strengths?
The greatest strength is that we are standing upon the most adequate
4000 hectares of the world for growing flowers of the upmost quality
and that we have the greatest economy niche of the world “at a
stone’s throw”. We have a valuable community of workers and
visionary business men and women who constantly show effort to
be able to meet the high demands of our markets. I can mention
freights and uncertainty regarding wages and fiscal issues, as well
as the “occasional” politicization of certain neighboring community
groups to the plantations, among the most evident weaknesses at
the moment of planning our budgets and placing interest in new
investments. I believe that our lack of union is also one of our most
important weaknesses.
Our strategy will be to be united, and to insist in keeping a thoughtful,
meaningful, close and professional dialogue with our Government so
that it gets to know us better and to provide support for our actions.
Without a Government that understands us, it is very difficult to think
of a promising future.

debe producir lo que nuestros productores nacionales no pueden;
Avalanche, Peach Avalanche, Grand Prix y Esperance.

than 10 producers, but now there are 2 or 3 which produce roses with
better quality and price due to they hire the best agronomists and
also performed laboratory studies using advanced technologies.
In addition, there are also Holland roses which are known for
flexible prices, this is the most important factor of competition for
Ecuadorian roses.
6. What are the positive and negative factors that have the
Ecuadorian rose compared with other producing countries?
The best of Ecuadorian roses is its quality (button size, stem
thickness and length), national and Holland production does not
have these features but now the producers have managed to reach
Ecuadorian quality in varieties such as Avalanche, Avalanche Peach,
Grand Prix and Esperance.
Another advantage of the Ecuadorian rose is that the flower is
more resistant to heat during the summer and in winter has visual
advantage to national and Holland production.
The quality of Ecuadorian roses of course, is the best in the world.
7. As one of the Ukrainian biggest importers, what do you
recommend to Ecuadorian producers?
Greater flexibility in pricing, adaptability to current tendencies,
produce varieties focused on Russian and Ukrainian market that is
thick stems and large buttons.
Above all, to pay constant attention to quality as the national
producers can match them.
1. How long have you been in the flower business and specifically
in importing Ecuadorian rose?
We have been in the flower business for ten years. We started to
import Ecuadorian roses about five years ago.
2. What changes Ukrainian market has been through lately and
which tendencies can you notice at present time?
We opened a flower shop last year. Ever since we have noticed that
clients become more and more demanding in flower arrangement
presentation. They prefer sophisticated bouquets rather than simple
bunches of flowers.
3. Which are the most popular varieties in the Ukrainian flower
market?
That is a hard question. According to the season, clients prefer
different colors and varieties. The winter best-sellers are not popular
in spring and summer. For example: white, pink and yellow roses
are demanded when the weather is hot, but in winter the demand of
those decreases.
Also it depends on the way that flowers are preserved. It means if
they are stored in coolers or not, due to some varieties with heat
blow open quickly and customers don’t like that.
The leading rose in our market is Forever Young which is considered
the best Ecuadorian red rose, and has not lost its popularity during
many years.
The problem regarding to color roses is that when it comes to big
orders, they are not always fulfilled in volume, and so their popularity
decreases soon.
In spite of all the factors above, the most popular rose varieties
will be those which have gotten a large button that does not open
totally.
4. Why Ukrainian market prefers long roses 80-100 cm while 50-
70cm roses are not demanded?
Long roses have always meant a high status. Most people prefer
them long to show a higher economic level.
The competition for short stems is cut roses in domestic production
as they are fresher and cheaper.
For Ecuador to be able to compete it must produce what our
domestic producers cannot- that are thick and long stems 80-
120 cm, and large buttons, by this came the division of the market,
domestic producers give us roses 50-70 cm and from Ecuador we
purchase longer roses with better quality.
5. Is there the possibility that short roses become more popular
in the Ukrainian market?
Ecuadorian roses can compete with national roses only with better
prices. Ukrainian roses have good quality, before there were more

Quality Flowers for the Russian Market
Since 1992, the Russian market has greatly captivated the attention of Ecuadorian flower growing, generating a noticeable growth in the business, within which, in order to satisfy the demands of this market, the production systems now are different from the field to the final packaging, since among their main demands are:
Size of the button, large and open.• Long and thick stems.• Constant variety change.• Attractive packaging which avoids the mishandling of • the flowers.A greater number of stems per bunch, etc.•
Many flower growing farms, seeing the demand that the Russian market requires, carried out strategic changes within their production systems, but few managed to improve their post harvests, let us not forget that the quality of the flower comes from the field, but the post harvest can keep that quality or spoil it.
Little training and innovation in the post harvest work systems, has been one of the key points that has allowed certain flower producing farms to distinguish themselves from others, because of handling quality in an objective manner, from those other farms that handle quality in a subjective manner.
When a flower producing farm handles objective or measurable quality systems, it holds the possibility of co-relating the length of the stem / size of the button / bending degree / stem diameter, etc., providing uniformity and consistency in the delivery of their final product. Whereas the farms that handle their parameters in a subjective manner leave a lot to be judged by the criteria of their workers; for some, the flowers might be in optimum conditions and for others it may not. When analyzing this issue, it can be determined that quality is based then in having “established parameters for the market” within the working system; and if it is translated to an economic control system, we can realize then that most of our production was selected for a lesser value market, or in the worst scenario, for a national market.
The management or not of “established parameters”, marks a huge difference among the flower producing farms, since this difference will allow the buyer to make a decision in favor of purchasing your flowers or not, maybe even getting to pay a higher price per stem if surprises are avoided in each shipment.
Flower producing farms that manage parameters, are those known as the “elite farms”, as Russians call them, since these have been able to create or are creating a brand within the market. There were flower producing farms which, in a given moment, were considered to be “elite”, but neglected the quality of their product and many of them no longer exist. Let us not forget that competition demands constant improvement.
It is important to point out that in the Russian market, the investment made for the freight of a box of roses is greater than that of the FOB cost and thus, ensuring quality, becomes an important priority. Due to this, several Russian buyers have chosen to hire quality control services, these verify the parameters established and demanded by clients, determining quality in a technical and objective manner, based on a provided sampling cart to verify if flowers comply or not with the required parameters.
The new tendency of the flower growing farms that wish to improve or to maintain the quality of their flowers is to hire an external quality control service, not part of their working team, since this service then will be much more critical and objective due to the fact that they will be able to compare your processes with others, taking these with them in each visit in order to suggest specific improvement measures to be taken so they can be able to certify your quality parameters to any client.
According to my experience, it is clear for me that my Russian clients do not look for flower producing farms that have a spectacular flower that remains as such for two weeks and then gets spoiled, they search for a flower that always holds the same quality, be it winter time, summer time, Valentine’s or March 8th, since in this manner the “trust upon the flower producing farm and upon its brand” is created.

Nueva variedad de Gypsophila Over Time ® Breeder: Esmeralda Breeding B.V.
in vitro.
obtener vitroplantas sanas y productivas.

The creation of a new variety of Gypsophila is a challenge from a scientific, agricultural and commercial point of view. This species is one of the most difficult to breed considering its genetic, morphological and agronomic traits.
For Esmeralda Breeding & Biotechnology, was a great achievement the creation of the new variety Over Time®, which was well received in the international market, despite the strong competition that existed at that time for the introduction of this product to the cut flower industry.
For about 12 years, the laboratory began with the process of breeding Gypsophila. Initially the focus was on the small flower type, but the companies visionary thinking drove to the development of a variety with bigger flowers of pure white color, density and excellent vase life.
The cross that led to the variety Over Time ® was performed in year 2003, however the production of the parental lines that gave rise to this variety started since 2000. It has been 10 years of focused work, which has yielded a variety of these characteristics.
Moreover, to reach this result was necessary to pollinate hundreds of thousands of flowers, which gave rise to 100,000 seedlings that were subjected to a rigorous selection and evaluation process. Pollination of this species requires great skill, as the size of flower and floral structures, the manipulation must be very sensitive and accurate. It requires much training, patience and passion.
Of the 100,000 genotypes created, only 100 passed the initial screening, ie a success rate of 0.1%, of which were cloned to be grown and evaluated for three consecutive generations and validated on-farm production for two years.
Screening tests were very rigorous and the selection criteria were applied mainly to the size and shape of the flower, the intensity of white, productivity, resistance to transport and above all the durability in the vase. Thus, from the 100 genotypes evaluated in the productive farms, only Over Time® was the variety that met all eligibility requirements.
The good performance of this variety is due in large part to the fact that the crossing and selection was carried out in-situ, which has allowed to select a genotype that is adapted to environmental conditions and production requirements of the sector.During the evaluation and development process of the variety Over Time®, it was necessary to use tissue culture tools to accelerate the multiplication and obtain high quality plants for subsequent phases. The laboratory team of Esmeralda Breeding, selected the most compact, healthy and vigorous cuttings to be introduced in vitro.
After disinfecting the cuttings from the field, the in vitro initiation was made from meristematic tissue because this tissue is free of pathogens and therefore allow to obtain healthy and productive TC plants. The growth of Gypsophila meristems in vitro takes between 4-6 weeks, after which it is necessary to carefully review the plants obtained and select the most compact, vigorous and clean. Any plant material that does not meet quality standards must be eliminated.
As a measure to ensure total health of the starting material, the plants were planted in specific culture media to promote growth of endogenous bacteria and fungi. Plants that showed contamination were discarded, so that the propagation continued only from very clean plants.
Throughout the in vitro process, our main concern is always to ensure the growth from high quality plant material with excellent plant vigor and productivity. For this reason, in each cycle of propagation, rooting, planting in the greenhouse and hardening process, we conduct a strict selection of material, to guarantee delivery of healthy, compact, productive and vigorous plants, for the next phases of production and the formation of mother plants in the field.
Knowledge, time and investment for the creation of a variety, requires the clarity of the objective of the breeding program. The complement of classical breeding and biotechnology are essential for success in the creation of a variety, as was the case of development of the new variety of Gypsophila Over Time®.

Agroflora, Bellaro S.A., Ecuanrose, Flor Eloy, Garda Export S.A., Hacienda Santa Fé Cia.

Being one of the most important economies in the world and holder of one of the largest oil reserves in the planet, the Russian Federation has had a very noticeable economic development during the last 10 years. Its almost 140 million inhabitants and its very deep culture have made this country develop an extremely particular taste for flowers, and especially for Ecuadorian roses which thanks to their size, color and durability are deeply inside the consumer patterns of this nation.
The participation of Ecuador within the Russian rose market is of around 36.06%, and the country that follows is Colombia with a 13.05%, which positions the Ecuadorian flower as the product with greatest acceptance in this market. And as in all markets in which we have a strong presence, an important compromise to respond to its growing needs is generated. The roll of leader has been very well assumed by the Ecuadorian flower grower, who has not stopped making investments regarding the renovation of varieties; in a constant search of those colors that accentuate our participation in this giant country. We can say then, after generating a growth rate of 90% in recent years, that both Russians and Ecuadorians have not stopped looking for the colors that please our commercial partners. Flowers have been the ones that have determined a long relationship between the two countries. From this relationship, new ones have risen and have become stronger in many fields.
Now, in view of the relationships between our countries, we have significant challenges we have to overcome, as well as to learn to walk together. The offering that the two countries
be linked with a direct flight, will, without a doubt, help the Ecuadorian products have a greater participation in this market than they already have, and we must, together, make the most out of this agreement.
Let us celebrate these years of fruitful relationship, aware of our roll of leaders of the market in Russia, exactly measuring what we can do and what we cannot in order to keep our place in this market. The leader will always be the more noticed one and the one that is asked more of. Let us assume this roll and continue doing and improving all that helped get Ecuador to be today what it is in Russia and in other countries of the former Soviet Union. According to Elizabeth Barsallo, Task Manager of the Corporation for the Promotion of Exports CORPEI, the institution is providing support for the participation of 18 flower growing businesses in the Exhibition Flowers 2010 fair, which will be located in stand D450.
The participating flower growing farms are: Agroflora, Bellaro S.A., Ecuanrose, Flor Eloy, Garda Export S.A., Santa Fé Farm Cia. Ltda, Josarflor, La Rosaleda, Merino Roses, Nevado Ecuador, El Trébol Plantations, Rose Conection, Roses & Roses, and Sisapamba Roses, who will present an exhibition of flowers of the upmost quality and in the most varied colors, according to the demands of the Russian market.
Ecuadorian businesses have constantly worried about the innovation of the varieties of colors in order to satisfy the most demanding likes of the Russian consumers. The special location that Ecuador has, by being able to produce in altitudes over 2.800 meters above sea level, is taken the maximum advantage of. This allows producing a rose with unique lengths that sometimes are over 2 meters and with buttons of up to 15 cm. The flower has proven to have a long life in the vase, as a consequence of the adequate handling during all the productive process.
Additionally the enterprises have the FLOR ECUADOR seal, same that certifies those flower growing farms that are responsible with the environment, that place special attention to elevating the quality of life of their employees, that optimize resources through the compliance of the following parameters:
Environmental management and good agricultural 1. practices. Human and social responsibility management, as well 2. as to meet.Legal aspects required by Ecuadorian law.3.
Ecuadorian flowers also hold a UNICEF seal due to the elimination of child labor within the flower growing farms, placing special emphasis, during these past years, in working with the community to develop inclusive businesses that involve women who live near the plantations and which will help improve the quality of life of the communities.

1. How long have you been in the flower business and specifically in importing Ecuadorian rose?
I have been in the flower business since 1989. I have imported Ecuadorian flowers for fourteen years now.
2. What changes Ukrainian market has been through lately and which tendencies can you notice at present time?
Belarusian market is always changing, we have more and more flower growers and the latest tendency is to ask for best quality.
3. Which are the most popular varieties in the Ukrainian flower market?
Traditionally Belarusian clients require big button, thick necks, and bright intense colors.
4. Why Ukrainian market prefers long roses 80-100 cm while 50-70cm roses are not demanded?
The main competition of Ecuadorian short-stem flowers is the Dutch, especially at the beginning of the spring when we can get better quality and a better price there. Local production has also increased lately. Local growers count on the support of the government through the form of campaigns for promoting local product.
5. Is there the possibility that short roses become more popular in the Ukrainian market?
The main issue in the importation of Ecuadorian flowers is the transportation of boxes- boxes are mistreated, flower gets broken and arrive spoiled. In addition to this problem, not all Ecuadorian farms grow quality roses.
6. What are the positive and negative factors that have the Ecuadorian rose compared with other producing countries?
The main points that prevent the demand of Ecuadorian rose from growing are:
Transportation (which reduces flower quality).• Price (high transportation price).•
7. As one of the Ukrainian biggest importers, what do you recommend to Ecuadorian producers?
Ecuadorian growers should pay more attention to flower quality, they should not store flower before the holidays (Valentines’ or March the 8th, Back to school time, etc). At those important holidays we end up receiving old flower at high prices.Ecuadorian growers should also try to increase production in the high seasons so that we can get our orders confirmed and keep stability in our markets.
