Foreword
ISO(theInternationalOrganizationforStandardization)isaworldwidefederationofnationalstandardsbodies(ISOmember bodies). 18 Coatings based on non-crystalline low-viscosity polyolefin tapes
18.1 Coating identification
Coatingsbasedonnon-crystallinelow-viscositypolyolefintapesshallbeidentifiedintheAPSinaccordancewithTable40andshallmeettherequirementsofTable41.
Datasheetsforthenon-crystallinelow-viscositypolyolefincompoundtapesusedasthebaseofthecoatingsshallbeinaccordancewithTable42.
ApplicationinstructionsshallbeprovidedbythemanufacturerinaccordancewithTable43.
18.2 Description of the coatings
Thecoatingsconsistofthefollowing:
acoatcomprisingoneorseverallayersofanon-crystallinelow-viscosity(fullyamorphous,non-crosslinked)polyolefin(e.g.polyisobutylene)compoundtapeappliedwithoutanyprimeroradhesive;thismaterialmaybereinforcedbyfabrics;abackingfilmmaycoverthiscompoundtape;
anouterwrap,whichshallbeapolymerictape(FJCtype1E-a)oraheat-shrinkablesleeve(FJCtype1E-b)oranyotheragreedmaterial, provided that the requirementsofTable41are fulfilled for thecompletecoating.
NOTE Thepurposesoftheouterwraparetoprovideadditionalpressureinordertosupportcoldflowofthecompoundtapeandself-healingpropertiesofthecompletecoatingsystemandtogivemechanicalprotection.
Maximumdesign temperature is50C to80C,dependingon thecompositionof thenon-crystalline low-viscositypolyolefincompoundtapeandonthechoiceofouterwrap.
Specificconfigurationsallowinghighermaximumdesigntemperaturemaybeusedsubjecttoqualification.
ThemaximumdesigntemperatureshallbepreciselydefinedintheAPSandforthecoatingidentification(seeTable40).RequirementsgiveninTable41areapplicablewhateverthemaximumdesigntemperature.
18.3 Surface preparation
SurfacepreparationshallbecarriedoutinaccordancewiththeAPS.Theedgesoftheplantcoatingshallbebevelledandtheplantcoatingshallberoughenedovertheminimumlengthspecifiedfortheoverlapontheplantcoating(see18.4.2).
Surfacepreparationshallbecarriedouteitherbymeansofwire-brushcleaning inaccordancewith9.1.2.1and9.1.2.3toaminimumdegreeofcleanlinessofISO8501-1:2007,gradeSt2,orbymeansofabrasiveblastcleaninginaccordancewith9.1.2.1and9.1.2.2toaminimumdegreeofcleanlinessofISO8501-1:2007,gradeSa2.
Alternativesurfacepreparationmethodsmaybeusedbyagreement.
Dustcontaminationshallbeamaximumofgrade3measuredinaccordancewithISO8502-3:1992.
18.4 Application of the coatings
18.4.1 General
ApplicationofthecoatingsshallbecarriedoutinaccordancewiththeAPS.
Thenon-crystallinelow-viscositypolyolefincompoundtapeshallbeappliedwithouttensionbymeansoflay-uptechniques,usingprefabricatedshapesandsizeswhicharewrappedinawrap-aroundmethod.Alternatively,spiralwrappingmaybeusedforsmall-diameterpipes.

Theouterwrapshallbeapplieddirectlyonthecompoundtapeinaccordancewith10.4.5forpolymerictapeor11.4.3 forheat-shrinkablesleeves,or inaccordancewith themanufacturers recommendations forotheragreedmaterials.
Theminimumapplicationtemperatureshallbe20Cabovetheglasstransitiontemperatureofthelow-viscositypolymer.
18.4.2 Overlap
Theoverlapofthecompoundtapeontheplant-appliedcoatingshallbeinaccordancewiththemanufacturersapplicationinstructions(seeTable43)andshallbeaminimumof50mm.
Theouterwrapshallcoverthecompoundtape.
Whenapolymerictapeisusedfortheouterwrap(Type1E-a),itmayoverlaptheplantcoating.
Whenaheat-shrinkablesleeve(Type1E-b)isused,itshalloverlaptheplantcoatingbyatleast50mmonbothsides,excludingbevels.
The overlap of any other agreed outer wrap material shall be in accordance with the manufacturersrecommendations.
Adoublethicknessofthecompoundtapeshallbeappliedinanareaextending25mmeithersideoftheweldcap.
Theoverlapofthespirallywrappedouterwraptapeshallbe50%.
18.5 Testing of the applied coating
18.5.1 General
Thetestsin18.5.2to18.5.14,summarizedinTable41,shallbecarriedoutforproductionqualitycontrolandforPQTandPPTifrequired.
18.5.2 Thickness
Theminimumthicknessesofthecompoundtapeandofthecompletecoatingshallbeagreedbetweentheenduserand/orpurchaserandtheapplicator,basedonthedatasheetsandrecommendationsofthemanufacturers.TheminimumthicknessshallbespecifiedintheAPS.
Unlessotherwiseagreedwiththepurchaser,theminimumthicknessofthecompletecoatingontheweldcapshallbenotlessthan0,6mm.
NOTE Thecoatingthicknessontheweldcapisnormallylessthanonthebodybecausesomeofthecoatingmaterialflowsfromtheweldcaptothebody,bothduringandafterapplication.Thisisnecessarytopreventvoidsinthecoatingandisnotdetrimentaltothecorrosionprotection.
ThecoatingthicknessshallbemeasuredusingthemethodgiveninAnnexA.
18.5.3 Holiday detection
Theentiresurfaceof thecoated jointshallbechecked forholidaysorotherdiscontinuitiesatavoltageof5kV/mm+5kVatamaximumof25kV,inaccordancewiththemethoddefinedinAnnexB.Thistestshallbecarriedoutafterapplicationofthecompoundtapeandmayberepeatedaftercompletionofthecoatingwheresorequiredbythepurchaser.
HolidaysshallberepairedinaccordancewiththeAPS.

18.5.4 Impact resistance
Theimpactresistanceshallbemeasuredonthecompletecoating,usingthemethodgiveninAnnexG,andshallmeettherequirementsofTable41.
18.5.5 Indentation resistance
The indentation resistance shall bemeasured on the complete coating at 23 C and atmaximum designtemperature,usingthemethodgiveninAnnexH,andshallmeettherequirementsofTable41.
18.5.6 Specific electrical insulation resistance
Thespecificelectricalinsulationresistanceshallbemeasuredonthecompoundtape,usingthemethodgiveninAnnexK,andshallmeettherequirementsofTable41.
18.5.7 Cathodic disbondment resistance
Thecathodicdisbondmentresistanceshallbemeasuredonthecompletecoating,usingthemethodgiveninAnnexFcarriedoutonapipesection.TheresistancetocathodicdisbondmentshallmeettherequirementsofTable41.Thecathodicdisbondmenttestshallbecarriedoutoveraperiodof28daysat23C.Atestdurationof48hinsteadof28daysmaybeusedforPPTorproductiontestingifthetesttemperatureisincreasedto65CandprovidedthatcomparisonofresultsisperformedduringPQT.
Thecathodicdisbondmentafter28daysatmaximumdesigntemperature(subjecttoanupperlimitof95C)shallmeettherequirementsofTable41.
Attheendofthetest,thethicknessofthecompoundtapeatthelocationoftheartificialdefectshallbeasaminimumthethicknessspecifiedintheAPSandnoholidayshallbedetected.
18.5.8 Peel strength between outer wrap and compound tape and between layers of outer wrap
Thepeelstrengthbetweenouterwrapandcompoundtape(withorwithoutbacking)shallbemeasuredat23Candatmaximumdesigntemperature,usingthemethodgiveninAnnexM,andshallmeettherequirementsofTable41.
If the outer wrap consists of multiple layers, the peel strength between outer wrap layers shall also bemeasuredat23Candatmaximumdesigntemperature,usingthemethodgiveninAnnexM,andshallmeettherequirementsofTable41.
18.5.9 Adhesion to pipe surface and plant coating
18.5.9.1 General
Theadhesiontestshallbecarriedoutafterapplicationoftheouterwrapandaftercoolingwhereheathasbeenapplied.
18.5.9.2 Testing
Thepeelstrengthwithrespecttosteelandplantcoatingofcompoundtapecontainingreinforcementshallbetestedat23Candatmaximumdesigntemperature,usingthemethodsgiveninAnnexD,andtheresultsconcerningfailuremodeandsubstratecoverageshallmeettherequirementsgiveninTable41,unlessotherwiseagreedbyallpartiesincludingthemanufacturer.ThemethodgiveninD.1shallbeusedforPQT.ThemethodgiveninD.2maybeusedforPPTandproductiontesting.
Theadhesiontosteelandplantcoatingofcompoundtapecontainingnoreinforcementshallbemeasuredasfollows.Adhesiontestingshallbecarriedoutatthe6oclockand12oclockpositionsoftheFJCbyusingautilityknifetoattempttoliftthecoatingmaterialfromthesteelsurface.Thecoatingmaterialshallleaveafilmofcorrosionprotectivecoatingmaterialonthesubstrate.Thereshallbenoevidenceofadhesivefailure.

18.5.11 Lap shear strength

Thehot-waterimmersiontestofthecompoundtapeshallbecarriedoutinaccordancewithAnnexIfor100daysatTmax+20C,limitedasspecifiedinAnnexI.Theadhesionofthecompoundtapetothepipesurfaceandtheplantcoatingshallbemeasuredasspecifiedin18.5.9.2andshallmeettherequirementsofTable41.
Thehot-waterimmersiontestoftheouterwrapshallbecarriedoutinaccordancewithAnnexIfor100daysatTmax+20C,limitedasspecifiedinAnnexI.Theadhesionoftheouterwraptotheplantcoatingshallbemeasuredasspecifiedin18.5.9.2andshallmeettherequirementsofTable41.
18.5.13 Glass transition temperature
Theglasstransitiontemperatureof thecompoundtapeshallbedeterminedbydifferential thermalanalysis(AnnexE)ofasampleofthematerialandshallmeettherequirementsofTable41.
18.5.14 Drip resistance
Nodrippingof thecompound tapeshall beallowed,as specified inTable41,whenperforming the test inaccordancewithAnnexJwithamodifiedtesttemperatureofmaximumdesigntemperature+15Candinanycaseaminimumof80C.
