Bétonsalon - Center for art and researchBétonsalon reopens after the break to continue its programme dedicated, this year, to the idea of knowledge sharing across disciplines, histories and geogra-phies. This season, the exhibition space is taken over by independent curator Mélanie Mermod who, over the past year has been carrying out extensive research on the Jikken kōbō (Experimental Workshop), a Japanese multidisciplinary group from the 1950s. Resulting from different partnerships with CAC Brétigny, The Showroom in London, The House of Japan in Paris and Paris Diderot University, the Jikken kōbō exhibition and the multiple events accompanying it link, and some-times blur, historical research and contemporary reinterpretation. The visual, tex-tual, filmic and sound achievements and approaches of Jikken Kobo are presented through works and documents of the period, as well as through the intervention of contemporary artists and musicians invested in research on the Japanese col-lective. It is with pleasure and much interest that we see the Jikken kōbō exhibi-tion integrate Bétonsalon's programme, and that we unveil the content of this boo-klet which offers new entry points into the subject.

Shozo KitadaiThe members of the visual arts section are the photographer Kiyoji Ohtsuji, the engraver Tetsuro Komai, the artists Katsuhiro Yamaguchi, Hideko Fukushima and Shozo Kitadai. Including expressionist paintings, engravings for children's books, or science fiction short film, their productions are far apart from each other and reflect more their personal researches and interests rather than an aesthetic specific to the Jikken Kobo.
The extracts from the text of Reiko Sato which present the early career of Kitadai before the creation of the Jikken Kobo, show some of the different individuals and collectives linked to the group.
Shozo Kitadai got later interested in photography, but also in aeronautics, building his own cameras, tools, or model aircrafts with onboard cameras. He spent the end of his life almost self-sufficient, rejecting the fusion of art, technology and industry as celebrated at the Expo'70 in Osaka.

Joji Yuasa Born in 1929 in Koriyama, Joji Yuasa is a compo-ser based in Tokyo. He began his career with the group Jikken Kobo, which included four other com-posers : Kazuo Fukushima, Toru Takemitsu, Hiroyoshi Suzuki, Keijiro Sato. Self-taught, Joji Yuasa became, as Toru Takemitsu, one of Japan’s most important composer of contemporary music in the second half of the twentieth century.
He received numerous awards, commissions and fellowships from institutions such as the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Canada Council, IRCAM (1987) or Experimental Music Center of the University of San Diego (1976).

Kuniharu Akiyama The epistolary exchange between one of the mem-bers of Jikken kōbō, Kuniharu Akiyama (1929–1996) and John Cage (1912–1992) began on 18th April 1952. It was as a representative of the Jikken Kobo group, officially founded in November 1951 in Tokyo, that the Japanese artist addressed the older artist. Akiyama was a very influential member of the collec-tive, both a music critic oriented towards avant-gardes and the chief editor of two magazines spe-cialised in contemporary music, Ongaku Geijutsu and The Symphony through which he contributed to publicising foreign composers in his country. An all-round artist, he was also a writer, poet, a composer of contemporary music and of film.

Toshio MatsumotoLeading figure in the Japanese experimental cin-ema since the 1960s, Toshio Matsumoto has made more than forty films, some of which have become cult hits such as Funeral Parade of Roses (Bara no soretsu, 1969) and For the Damaged Right Eye (Tsuburekakatta migime no tame ni, 1968). If his early films are close to experimental documentary, his work has constantly evolved in form and approach. He has managed to use the cinema the-atre to make simultaneous projections, make the first videos only using a computer, and documented the underground, trans- and activist scene in Tokyo in the 1960s and 1970s. What is less known is that Toshio Matsumoto took part in the activities of The Jikken Kobo.
For the Damaged Right Eye (Tsuburekakatta migime no tame ni, 1968).

APNFrom January 1952 to the Spring of 1954, the pho-tographer Ohtsuji is collaborating with many artists such as two members of the Jikken Kobo (Yamaguchi and Kitadai) for a project of « pho-tographed assemblages » entitled APN. This pro-ject proposes to design every week a new image title for the topic « Asahi picture News » in the Japanese magazine, Asahi Girafu, equivalent of Life in the United-States. These photographs were not photomontages, but photographs of objects, shapes, or structures which, when staged, desig-ned the letters A, P or N (acronym of title of the topic). The caption accompanying the photo showed the precise materials of the assemblage of objects.
Noaji ImaiBorn in 1928, Noaji Imai is still living in Tokyo today. While writing his PHD in Philosophy at the University of Hosei on the artistic use of light in history, Noaji Imai got involved in stage lighting. He is twenty-three years old when he joins the Jikken Kobo for their first event The Joy of Life and at that time he has been already working on stage lighting for two years. Recalling that time, Imai remembers he had to deal with somewhat dangerous lights system and that only few members of the group agreed to help him, fearing electricity accidents. He developed several new lighting displays, sometimes using rudimentary techniques, as plugging off and on the general power supply of the theatre to create the first stroboscopic effects on stage. All along his career he participated in more than 500 projects, among which Kabuki, Nô, exotic dance revue and the light conception of three pavillions at the Expo’70 in Osaka. The following excerpts are taken from an article published in 1961 in the well-known Japanese art magazine Bijutsu techo. This is quite par-ticular for any art magazine to devote an article on lighting stage. The article is split in three sections, an interview of Noaji Imai, a presentation of his work by his friend and stage director Hisamitu Noguchi, and documents on the play he had just finished at that time, The Red Cocoon, directed by Makoto Moroi and presented at the legendary Sogetsu Art Center.

1 Thomas R. H., Havens « The Experimental Workshop », Radicals and Realists in the Japanese Nonverbal Arts : The Avant-Garde Rejection of Modernism, Honolulu, University of Hawaii Press, 2006, p. 55. 2 Katsuhiro Yamaguchi, « The Experimental Workshop (Jikken Kobo) », in Jasia Reichardt (éd.), Experimental Workshop: Japan 1951–58, cat. expo., Londres, Annely Juda Fine Art, 2009, première page de l’article. 3 Alfred Pacquement, « Gutaï : l'extraordinaire intuition », in Shuji Takashina et Germain Viatte (éds.), Japon des avant-gardes : 1910–1970, Paris, Centre Pompidou, 1986, p. 290. 4 Alfred Pacquement, op. cit., p. 285.
Michel Tapié With a multidisciplinary and collective approach considered as «post-modernist », or at least « avant-gardist », coupled with a plastic vision viewed as «ultra-modernist » 1, the Jikken Kobo does not deliver a speech easy to insert into the «evolutionary » narrative of styles and movements in art history. According to Yamaguchi, this explains the invisibility of the Jikken Kobo compared to the international recognition of Gutai : «In view of the typologies developed by the history of Western art after the war, the activities of the Gutai group are completely Mainstream »
2. While many historians and critics lament the too simplistic inclusion of the Gutai in the history of world art, discreetly wedged between Jackson Pollock, George Matthieu and Allan Kaprow to illustrate the transition from abstract art to perfor-mance, the Jikken Kobo, on the other side, is simply absent. Yet, before the arrival of Michel Tapié in Japan in 1957, the Jikken Kobo is the collective most recog-nized by critics in Japan, which mainly consider the Gutai «as a provincial group that lacks credibility as an producer of creativity » 3. While the meeting of Tapié with Gutai «looks like love at first sight » 4 and enables Tapié to forge an international network of «action painter », the Jikken Kobo has virtually ceased their activities as a collective when Tapié arrives in Japan. Tapié meets only individual members, and sees no collective production of the Jikken Kobo. Hence, conse-quently, its approximate description of the Experimental Workshop in the article «Actualisation de l'art au Japon » {1} written at Tapié's return from Japan. •

Jeudi 8 septembre 2011 Performance – « Be a speaker. So be it … » Version】« aberrante » du projet « Be a speaker. So be it ...
Mercredi 19 octobre 2011Conférence – Reiko Tomii & Joji Yuasa
