The greatest of the three temples was sacred to Jupiter Baal, ("Heliopolitan Zeus"), identified here with the sun, and was constructed during the first century AD ( completed circa 60 AD ). At the time it was the largest temple in the empire[citation needed]. With it were associated a temple to Venus and a lesser temple in honor of Bacchus (though it was traditionally referred to as the "Tem-ple of the Sun" by Neoclassical visitors, who saw it as the best-preserved Roman temple in the world – it is surrounded by forty-two columns nearly 20 meters in height). Thus three Eastern deities were worshipped in Roman guise: thundering Jove, the god of storms, stood in for Baal-Hadad, Venus for ‘Ashtart (known in English as Astarte) and Bacchus for Anatolian Dionysus.

The city, then known as Heliopolis (there was another Heliopolis in Egypt), was made a colonia by Septimius Severus in AD 193, having been part of the territory of Berytus on the Phoenician coast since 15 BC. Work on the religious complex there lasted over a century and a half and was never completed. The dedication of the present temple ruins, the largest religious building in the entire Roman empire, dates from the reign of Septimus Severus (193-211 AD), whose coins first show the two temples. The great courts of approach were not finished before the reigns of Caracalla (211-217 AD) and Philip the Arab (244-249 AD). In commemoration, no doubt, of the dedication of the new sanctuaries, Severus conferred the rights of the ius Italicum on the city.Today, only six Corinthian columns remain standing. Eight more were disassembled and shipped to Constantinople under Justinian's orders circa 532-537 AD, for his basilica of Hagia Sophia.

LEBANONLEBANON(1941-)

Lebanon's population is 57 percent Muslim and 40 percent Christian, and from 1943, the two groups co-existed through a constitutional apportioning of key government posts. During 1969-75, Palestinian commando groups became increasingly powerful in Lebanon, which they used as a base for raids against Israel. Efforts of the government to restrain Palestinian activities, with which many Lebanese Muslims sympathized, and after 1970 Israeli counterattacks against Palestinian bases in southern Lebanon destabilized the Lebanese government. During 1965-76, these ten-sions erupted in civil war. Generally, Arab nations supported the Palestinians and leftist Muslim factions, while Israel supported the various Christian groups. In 1976, Syria intervened, sup-pressed PLO activity and attempted to mediate the conflict. The civil war resumed in 1981, and the country disintegrated into chaos between numerous Muslim and Christian groups, variously backed by Syria and Israel. In 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon in an effort to finally suppress Pales-tinian terrorist activities, withdrawing, under U.S. pressure, to a security zone in the south in 1983. Continuing terrorist operations in southern Lebanon brought Israeli raids in 1993 and 1996.

The National Museum of Beirut is the principal museum of archaeology in Lebanon. The collection was begun after World War I, and the museum was officially opened in 1942. The museum has collections totalling about 100,000 objects, most of which are antiquities and medieval finds from excavations undertaken by the Directorate General of Antiquities. About 1300 artifacts are exhibit -ed, ranging in date from prehistoric times to the medieval Mamluk period.During the 1975 Lebanese Civil War, the museum stood on the front line that separated the war-ring factions. The museum's Egyptian Revival building and its collection suffered extensive dam -age in the war, but most of the artifacts were saved by last-minute pre-emptive measures.Today, after a major renovation, the National Museum of Beirut has regained its former position, especially as a leading collector for ancient Phoenician objects.

The Roman rulers of Lebanon made Beit Mery their summer resort due to its high location and pleasant summer weather. This huge site, on a strategic location overlooking Beirut, is on three levels. At the top are the ruins of a Roman temple dedicated to the important local god baal marqod which has a church built on parts of its foundations. The temple itself, probably dating to the first century AD, has masonry in-tact up to three meters. Three of the six columns are still standing, although not at their original height. A short walk down the hill leads to the site of a small second century AD temple to the god-dess June. A monumental doorway still stands amid a jumble of ancient stones, some with Latin inscriptions. This doorway was probably the start of a processional path between the two temples. Below the June temple is an extensive area of scattered ruins.

LLIBERIAIBERIA(1860-)

Stamp-issuing status: active; Population: 2,602,068. A republic on the west coast of Africa, Liberia was colonized after 1822 by freed slaves from the United States. In 1847, Liberia was proclaimed independent. Liberian political and economic life was long dominated by the descendants of these freed slaves, who constitute less than 3 percent of the country's population. In 1980, a military coup led by Sgt. Samuel Doe overthrew the establishment government. Doe's harsh rule prompted an assassination attempt in 1985 and rebellion in 1989. In 1990, he was captured and executed. A chaotic civil war lasted until 1996, claiming more than 150,000 lives.

The image of Diana of Ephesus is a specialized form of Diana from late antiquity that includes as -pects of Ishtar, Isis, Cybele and Inanna. She is a comprehensive figure of the divine feminine, and was called "Queen of Heaven", "Magna Mater" (Great Mother), Mother of the Animals, and Lady of the Wild Beasts. The many pomegranate-like breasts and the varied wild beasts adorning Diana of Ephesus show her also as an image of Mother Nature herself, fruitful and providing for all living things.

Cyrene was founded in 630 BC as a settlement of the Greeks from the Greek island of Thera, tra-ditionally led by Battus I, ten miles from its port, Apollonia (Marsa Sousa). Details concerning the founding of the city are contained in Book IV of Histories, by Herodotus of Halicarnassus. It promptly became the chief town of ancient Libya and established commercial relations with all the Greek cities, reaching the height of its prosperity under its own kings in the 5th century BC. Soon after 460 BC it became a republic. In 413 BC, during the Peloponnesian War, Cyrene supplied Spartan forces with two triremes and pilots.[5] After the death of Alexander III of Macedon (323 BC), the Cyrenian republic became subject to the Ptolemaic dynasty. The inhabitants of Cyrene at the time of Sulla (c. 85 BC) were divided into four classes: citizens, farmers, resident aliens, and a minority population of Jews. The ruler of the town, Apion, be-queathed it to the Romans, but it kept its self-government. In 74 BC Cyrene was created a Roman province; but, whereas under the Ptolemies the Jewish inhabitants had enjoyed equal rights, they now found themselves increasingly oppressed by the now autonomous and much larger Greek population. Tensions came to a head in the insurrection of the Jews of Cyrene under Vespasian (73 AD, the First Roman-Jewish War) and especially Trajan (117 AD, the Kitos War). This revolt was quelled by Marcius Turbo, but not before huge numbers of people had been killed.[6]. Accord-ing to Eusebius of Caesarea the outbreak of violence left Libya depopulated to such an extent that a few years later new colonies had to be established there by the emperor Hadrian just to maintain the viability of continued settlement.

Leptis Magna, also known as Lectis Magna (or Lepcis Magna as it is sometimes spelled), also called Lpqy, Neapolis, Lebida or Lebda to modern-day residents of Libya, was a prominent city of the Roman Empire. Its ruins are located in Al Khums, Libya, 130 km east of Tripoli, on the coast where the Wadi Lebda meets the sea. The site is one of the most spectacular and unspoiled Ro -man ruins in the Mediterranean.Leptis Magna remained as such until the reign of the Roman emperor Tiberius, when the city and the surrounding area were formally incorporated into the empire as part of the province of Africa. It soon became one of the leading cities of Roman Africa and a major trading post.Leptis achieved its greatest prominence beginning in 193, when a native son, Lucius Septimius Severus, became emperor. He favored his hometown above all other provincial cities, and the buildings and wealth he lavished on it made Leptis Magna the third-most important city in Africa, ri -valing Carthage and Alexandria. In 205, he and the imperial family visited the city and received great honors. In 439, Leptis Magna and the rest of the cities of Tripolitania fell under the control of the Vandals when their king, Gaiseric, captured Carthage from the Romans and made it his capital. Unfortu -nately for the future of Leptis Magna, Gaiseric ordered the city's walls demolished so as to dis -suade its people from rebelling against Vandal rule. The people of Leptis and the Vandals both paid a heavy price for this in 523 when a group of Berber raiders sacked the city.Belisarius recaptured Leptis Magna in the name of Rome ten years later, and in 534, he destroyed the kingdom of the Vandals. Leptis became a provincial capital of the Eastern Roman Empire (see Byzantine Empire) but never recovered from the destruction wreaked upon it by the Berbers. It was the site of a massacre of Berber chiefs by the Roman authorities in 543

Sabratha's port was established, perhaps about 500 BC, as a Phoenician trading-post that served as a coastal outlet for the products of the African hinterland. The Phoenicians gave it the Lybi -co-Berber name 'Sbrt'n', which suggests that there may have been a native town built there prior to the Phoenicians' arrival. Sabratha became part of the short-lived Numidian Kingdom of Massinissa before being Romanized and rebuilt in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. The Emperor Septimus Severus was born nearby in Leptis Magna, and Sabratha reached its monumental peak during the rule of the Severans. The city was badly damaged by earthquakes during the 4th centu-ry, particularly the quake of AD 365. It was rebuilt on a more modest scale by Byzantine governors. Within a hundred years of the Arab conquest of the maghreb, trade had shifted to other ports and Sabratha dwindled to a village.

Ptolemais or Ptolemaida was one of the ancient capitals of Cyrenaica. It was probably named after Ptolemy III Euergetes. Its Latin name in Roman times was Tolmeta, from which the modern Libyan town of Tolmeitha derives its nameThe town was most probably founded in 7th or 6th century BC by settlers from Barka. Soon it be-came one of the founding city-states of the Pentapolis federation. In 331 BC the union was dis-solved after all of its towns surrendered to Alexander the Great. After his death the area formed part of the Ptolemaic empire. In early 1st century the region was conquered by Rome and became a separate province. Roman Tolmeta had no local water supply, but Roman architects built a con -duit from the hills and stored the water in eighteen huge galleries under the forum, about fourteen feet high by ten feet wide. These are in perfect repair and were rediscovered during the Italian oc-cupation. In the course of military operations against rebels, it was discovered that the rebels used the underground as a place of hiding; two or three hundred men could easily be hidden in them

Ghirza was an ancient Roman town near the Limes Tripolitanus in Roman Libya. Ghirza actually is situated in a desert area, but in Roman times the area was relatively fertile. Romans developed in Tripolitania their system of farms called Centenaria, with some small urban areas inside: Ghirza was one of these small frontier cities. The Legatus Quintus Anicius Faustus in 197 AD was appointed legatus of the Legio III Augusta and built several defensive forts of the Limes Tripolitanus in Tripolitania, among which Garbia and Golaia (actual Bu Ngem) in order to protect the province from the raids of nomadic tribes. He ful-filled his task quickly and successfully defeating the Garamantes. As a consequence the Roman city of Ghirza, situated away from the coast and south of Leptis Magna, developed quickly in a rich agricultural area. Ghirza became a "boom town" after 200 AD, when Septimius Severus had better organized the Limes Tripolitanus of Roman Libya. But with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century the area was partially abandoned by the Ro -manized libyans, who retreated to coastal places like Theodorias

The Museum of Qasr Libya (Castle Libya) is in a sense a Mosaic Museum. The mosaics were ex -cavated from the nearby Christian church after they were discovered by Libyan labourers in 1957. The collection contains 50 panels, mostly of animals, gods, goddesses, nymphs, and famous land-marks like the Pharos light house of Alexandria; illustrating the coexistence of Christian beliefs with the earlier pre-Christian iconography. The pagan or ancient religious traditions continued to flourish among the early Christian around the Mediterranean basin, and in some respects to the present day as folklore

Stamp-issuing status: active; Population: 31,461. A principality in central Europe between Switzer-land and Austria. Liechtenstein, founded in 1719, became a sovereign state in 1806, and became independent in 1866. Until 1918, it retained close ties with Austria, which until 1920 operated the Liechtenstein postal service. Since 1920, it has been associated with Switzerland, its post office having been under Swiss administration since 1921. In 1868, Liechtenstein abolished its army and has since remained free of foreign entanglements. Liechtenstein is one of the major tax havens of the world, and many international corporations have headquarters there. The country's major ex-ports include postage stamps and plastic postage stamp mounts.

The Rössen Culture (German: Rössener Kultur) is a Central European culture of the middle Neo-lithic (4,600–4,300 BC). It is named after the necropolis of Rössen (part of Leuna, in the Saalekreis district, Saxony-Anhalt). The Rössen Culture has been identified in 11 of the 16 states of Germany (it is only absent from the Northern part of the North German Plain), but also in the southeast Low Countries, northeast France, northern Switzerland and a small part of Austria. The Rössen culture is important as it marks the transition from a broad and widely distributed tradi -tion going back to Central Europe's earliest Neolithic LBK towards the more diversified Middle and Late Neolithic situation characterised by the appearance of complexes like Michelsberg and Fun-nel Beaker Culture.Rössen vessels are characteristically decorated with double incisions ("goat's foot incision" or Ger-man '"Geißfußstich"') with incrustation of white paste. Grooved or stamped incisions are also com-mon. Over time, the extent of the decorated areas appears to decrease, so that on later vessels it is mostly restricted to the neck or entirely absent. Typical shapes include tall footed bowls, globular cups, rectangular sheet-made bowls and boat-shaped vessels.

LLITHUANIAITHUANIA(1918-40, 1990-)

Stamp-issuing status: active; Population: 3,635,932. A country of eastern Europe, northeast of Po-land and south of Latvia. Lithuania ruled a large empire in the later Middle Ages, stretching from the Baltic to the Black Seas. In 1385 it was united with the Kingdom of Poland. Initially the domi -nant partner, Lithuania was gradually eclipsed by Poland. It was absorbed by Russia in 1793 and remained under Russian control until World War I. In 1915, the country was occupied by Germany, which supported its declaration of independence from Russia in 1918. German troops remained in Lithuania until the end of 1919. In 1920, the border district of Central Lithuania was lost to Poland, but this was somewhat offset by Lithuania's seizure of the German port of Memel from the Allies in 1923. In October 1939, Lithuania reoccupied Central Lithuania, in return for which it allowed the Soviet Union to establish military bases. In June 1940, Lithuania was seized by Soviet forces and in July was annexed to the Soviet Union. In June 1941, German forces occupied the country, and a number of local overprints on Russian stamps were used, as well as general overprints for Lith-uania as a whole. From November 1941 to 1944, German issues overprinted "Ostland" were used. In 1944, the Soviet Union reoccupied Lithuania. With the disintegration of the Soviet Union, Lithua -nia was one of the first nations to declare its independence, on March 11, 1990. This independen-ce was recognized by Western nations in August 1991, and by Russia in September. The last Rus-sian troops were withdrawn in 1993. Lithuania has since pursued membership in the European Union.

The Kernavė Archaeological site, about 35 km north-west of Vilnius in eastern Lithuania, repre -sents an exceptional testimony to some 10 millennia of human settlements in this region. Situated in the valley of the River Neris, the site is a complex ensemble of archaeological properties, en-compassing the town of Kernavė, forts, some unfortified settlements, burial sites and other archae-ological, historical and cultural monuments from the late Palaeolithic Period to the Middle Ages. The site of 194,4 ha has preserved the traces of ancient land-use, as well as remains of five im -pressive hill forts, part of an exceptionally large defence system. Kernavė was an important feudal town in the Middle Ages. The town was destroyed by the Teutonic Order in the late 14th century, however the site remained in use until modern times

Covering an area of some 50 ha, the oval-shaped Titelberg plateau is approximately 1 km long (NW to SE) and 500 m wide. It was occupied continuously for 700 years from about 300 BC. There is evidence of sporadic settlements dating back even further, perhaps to 2000 BC or before. From the 1st century BC and during the Gallo-Roman period, foundations of masonry replaced the earli-er, less durable constructions. These, together with the 9-m high earthen ramparts around the pe-riphery, clearly demonstrate the importance of the Celtic oppidum which appears to have been the seat of the Treveri chiefs.Although some interest had been shown in the site in 1928, serious archaeological excavations began in 1968 and continue today. These have been coordinated by Luxembourg's National Mu-seum of History and Art with the assistance of specialists from the University of Missouri. In partic-ular, the digs have unearthed the main residential area in the centre of the plateau and the public or recreational area, a few hundred meters to the south east. Both are located to the west of the farm road through the site which follows the path of the old Celtic/Roman road. There is also evi -dence of metal working and coin-minting activities long before the Roman conquest
