� Labor Day is a federal holiday. AllGovernment offices, organizations,and many businesses are closed.Some public celebrations, such asfireworks displays, picnics, andbarbecues, are organized, but theyare usually low key events. Publictransit systems do not usuallyoperate on their regular timetables.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUTHISTORY
The first Labor Day was held in1882. Its origins stem from thedesire of the Central LaborUnion to create a holiday forworkers. It became a federalholiday in 1894. It was originallyintended that the day wouldbe filled with a street paradeto allow the public toappreciate the work of thetrade and labor organizations

LABOR DAY: WHAT IT MEANS
Labor Day, the first Monday in September,is a creation of the labor movement and isdedicated to the social and economicachievements of American workers. Itconstitutes a yearly national tribute to thecontributions workers have made to thestrength, prosperity, and well-being of ourcountry.
SOMETHING ABOUT LEGISLATION…
The first governmental recognitioncame through municipal ordinancespassed in 1885 and 1886. From these, amovement developed to secure statelegislation. The first state bill wasintroduced into the New Yorklegislature, but the first to become lawwas passed by Oregon on February 21,1887. During 1887, four more states –Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey,and New York – created the Labor Dayholiday by legislative enactment. Bythe end of the decade Connecticut,Nebraska, and Pennsylvania hadfollowed suit. By 1894, 23 more stateshad adopted the holiday,
