"ongregation Agudath Israel of #est $sse% as founded in 1324 by some &4 families

ho banded together in re!ognition of the need for a 5eish spiritual presen!e in the"aldells. Among the founders ere -arry oodinE 5oseph *alperE -arry :rillE 5a!obLasserE Isaa! LevyE #illiam *tark and 5oseph loom. Arrangements ere made for the!hildren to study in a small insuran!e offi!e on loomfield Avenue here they eretaught by a oman hose name as Miss -arris. At the same timeE a group of teensseeking the !ompanionship of other 5eish young people 9oined together to form aso!ial !lub knon as the Ama!ites.

The planning and determination of these dedi!ated people resulted in a loan from alo!al bankE enabling them to pur!hase a pie!e of property on Mar!h 1&E 1322. roundbreaking !eremonies ere held for our first shulE a one room hite stu!!o building on#ashburn 'la!e. The @5eish League of "aldellF as born. 5oseph loom served aspresident from 132& to 132. Dues ere K;.44 a year. *ervi!es ere !ondu!ted by5oseph *alper and rabbis from 8eark ere hired for the -igh -oly Days. Abraham

Abarbanel as prin!ipalCtea!her for the religious s!hool.

In 13&+E 7abbi oldman as hired and in 13&3E his su!!essorE 7abbi Morris 7. #erb!ame to "aldell ith -elenE his bride of one year.

#ith more 5eish families moving into the areaE additional spa!e as soon needed.The !hildren ere attending the "onsolidated -ebre *!hool in loomfield andtransportation as diffi!ult. )or spe!ial fun!tions and -igh -oly Day servi!esE it asne!essary to rent the #omen

At the same timeE it as de!ided to build a ne-ebre *!hool hi!h ould !onne!t all of our fa!ilities ith the e%isting -ebre *!hool

hi!h ould then be !onverted into offi!es for the rabbi and prin!ipal and intoadditional nursery s!hool !lassrooms.

A detailed !ensus as undertaken in order to pro9e!t the future needs of the!ongregation. y 13;2E a building !ommittee as appointed and in 13;& plans entahead in earnest to bring the plans to fruition. Three !ommittees ere establishedfa!ilities finan!e and building. In 13;+E plans ere approved by the !ongregation anda fundraising !ampaign to raise K+44E444 took pla!e in 13;/ and as subs!ribed byabout 34. -oeverE mortgage money as diffi!ult to obtain at that time and it as notuntil 5anuaryE 13;= hen a favorable mortgage as finally se!ured. round breaking!eremonies took pla!e ith mu!h fanfare in the spring and on *eptember 1/E 13;E the

dedi!ation of the ne san!tuaryE re!eption hallE kit!hen and -ebre *!hool took pla!e. A dedi!ation ball as held on *eptember 21E 13;.

)ulfillment of pledges by the membership made it possible to hold a @Mortgage urningall on ,!tober 21E 13=. AgainE in the eightiesE ith the appointment in 13=3 of 7abbi

Alan *ilverstein as our spiritual leader to su!!eed 7abbi Morris #erb. ho retired afterforty years of dedi!ated servi!eE e found e ere outgroing our fa!ility. A long rangeplanning !ommittee as appointed hi!h served over several administrations andfinallyE renovation and e%pansion plans began in earnest ith the formation of the@7enovate in B !ampaign and the appointment of implementation and finan!e!ommittees to overseeE plan and arrange for finan!ing of a K2E444E444 renovation and

building pro9e!t. At the same timeE our groing !ongregation presaged the need for afrill time !antorE and "antor 5oel "aplanE ho had been seing as our part time !antorhile in s!hool as appointed to 9oin 7abbi *ilverstein on the imah as !antor. A ma9orinflu% of young families into our synagogue family as ell served ith the appointmentof *usan #erk as our edu!ational dire!tor and in 13E ith the reali>ation thatvolunteers !ould no longer handle the myriad responsibilities of a groing!ongregationE our first e%e!utive dire!tor as brought in.

In 13=E the sale of our $li>abeth *treet property allos us to refurbish the *an!tuaryand -igh -oliday *ervi!es ere held there in 13. Ma9or repairs hi!h erene!essary to repair leaks in our roof and the une%pe!ted availability and pur!hase of2; A!ademy 7oad greatly added to the e%pe!ted !osts of the renovationE utE in the

spring of 133E a favorable mortgage as se!ured uilding as begun at on!eE ithformal ground breaking taking pla!e in the fall. 'lans !alled for a NspineJ to !onne!t allparts of our buildingE alloing us for the first time to rea!h one part of our fa!ilityithout going through anotherE a ne and e%panded religious s!hoolE !hapelE offi!eingE a renovated and e%panded so!ial hailE 0outh LoungeE library and meat and dairykit!hens Dedi!ation !eremonies ere held on 5une 1;E 1331.

The 0outh "ommission serves as the poli!y makingE !oordinating and supervisingagen!y for all of the !ongregationation for =th and th gradersE sponsoring synagogue?!entereda!tivities !oordinated ith and !o?!urri!ular to the synagogue s!hool. The :adimaasketball team plays throughout 8orthern 8e 5ersey as part of the regional 6nited*ynagogue asketball League.

UNITED S8NAGOGUE 8OUTH7 6*0 serves our teenagers in the 3th?12th grades.Meetings are held in the synagogue on a regular s!hedule ith spe!ial emphasis onregional eventsE both edu!ational and so!ial. 7egional !onventions are held ti!eduring the s!hool year. There is an international !onvention during the inter re!essand a regional eek?long en!ampment in late August. A basketball team is sponsoredfor this group and the team is a member of the 8orthern 8e 5ersey 6nited *ynagogue

regional basketball league.
