STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION

The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like God—we want control, power, and answers to all of life’s difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conversion. We look to God and to one another for strength against temptation.

FORTALEZA ANTE LA TENTACIÓN

El primer domingo del tiempo de Cuaresma siempre incluye el relato evangélico de la tentación del Señor Jesús en el desierto por el diablo. Este año tiene como trasfondo la primera lectura de Génesis, en la que se narra la primera tentación del diablo que ocurre en el jardín del Edén. El relato del Evangelio transcurre en el desierto. Los creyentes sabemos que la tentación viene tanto en nuestros propios jardines como en los desiertos de nuestra vida. La Cuaresma comienza, y nuestra atención se dirige a esa tentación dentro de nosotros de hacernos como Dios –queremos control, poder y respuesta a todas las difíciles preguntas de la vida. A nuestras comunidades de fe se les ofrece este tiempo de arrepentimiento para que podamos unir nuestro corazón al de otros en el difícil camino de la conversión. Nos volvemos a Dios y hacia los demás buscando fortaleza ante la tentación.

Lent Season News

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and ab-stinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays dur-ing Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

Norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.

The norms concerning abstinence from meat are bind-ing upon those from age 14 onwards.

Stations of the Cross

Will begin the following week after ash Wednesday. Tuesdays, 6:45 pm in Spanish Wednesdays, 7:00 pm in English (simple supper at 6 pm)

This traditional Catholic devotion helps us to meditate on the events of Christ’s passion. Par-ticipating in the stations with your parish community is an excellent way to prayerfully live the season of Lent. All are welcome – please join us! Our Lenten little black books that include 6 minute reflec-tions will be available at all weekend Masses this week. Make sure to take one and take sometime each day during this season for prayer and reflection.

What is the CRS Rice Bowl?

CRS Rice Bowl is Catholic Re-lief Services’ Lenten faith in-action program for families and faith communities. The program

invites Catholics to live in solidarity with our poorest and most vulnerable brothers and sisters through the three Lenten pillars of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Par-ticipants journey through the 40 days of Lent with the daily reflections included in the Lenten Calendar and on the CRS Rice Bowl mobile app. You’ll receive ideas for small, sacrificial gifts to fill your Rice Bowls as you read and watch Stories of Hope from individuals and commu-nities whose lives have been changed by CRS Rice Bowl.

Those participating in our RE programs have received a Rice bowl to participate in the Lenten Activity. We have additional Rice bowl boxes in the church if you would like to take one and participate. They will be collected at the end of lent to be sent to CRS. Download the app for Lenten reflections, recipes, and more.

Noticias de Cuaresma

El Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo son días obligatorios de ayuno y

abstinencia para los católicos. Además, los vier-nes durante la Cuaresma son días de abstinencia obligatorios.

Las normas sobre el ayuno son obligatorias desde los 18 años hasta 59. Al ayunar, se le permite a una persona comer una comida completa, así como dos comidas más pequeñas que en conjunto no son iguales a una comida completa.

Las normas relativas a la abstinencia de carne son obli-gatorias para aquellos de 14 años de edad en adelante.

¿Qué es el Plato de Arroz de CRS?

Plato de Arroz de CRS es el progra-ma de Cuaresma de Catholic Relief Services (servicios católicos de alivio) de fe en acción para las familias y las comunidades de fe. Este programa invita a los católicos a vivir en solidaridad con nuestros hermanos y hermanas más pobres y vulnerables a través de los tres pilares de la Cua-resma de la oración, el ayuno y el sacrificio. Los participan-tes hacen un recorrido durante los 40 días de la Cuaresma con las reflexiones diarias incluidas en el calendario de Cuaresma y en la aplicación móvil de Plato de Arroz de CRS. Tú recibirás ideas para pequeñas ofrendas, de sacrifi-cio para llenar tu Plato de Arroz al leer y ver historias de esperanza de individuos y comunidades cuyas vidas han sido cambiadas por Plato de Arroz de CRS.

Aquellos participando en nuestros programas de Edu-cación Religiosa han recibido un plato de arroz para parti-cipar en esta actividad cuaresmal. Tenemos platos adicio-nales en la iglesia si desea participar. Estos son colectados al concluir la cuaresma. Pueden bajar la aplicación para

obtener reflexiones, recetas y más sobre esta cuaresma.
