The Story ~ 2014 Sermon Series I love good stories! I love to read, hear, and tell a good story. The Bible itself reveals a great story, which contains many other fascinating stories! It is amazing how much we learn about God as we read through the stories of the Old Testament. Of course, the greatest story the Bible tells is the story of Jesus Christ. Next year, 2014, for our first sermon series, we are going to explore the story of the Bible. We will begin with Genesis and continue through to Revelation. We will learn much about the Bible and how it all fits together as we follow the story of Scripture. This sermon series will consist of approximately thirty-one sermons. However, this sermon series will be divided up into about five acts. As we explore the story of the Bible through sermons, I want to encourage all of us to reach for the goal of reading through our Bible next year. Several excellent Bible reading programs exist to assist us. There is also a book called, The Story, that will accompany this sermon series. This book is a compilation of Scriptures taken from the New International Version of the Bible and will be available for every family/individual in the month of December. You may also want to purchase this book as a Christmas gift for someone. In order for us to learn even more about the story of the Bible, all of our Small Groups that wish to participate will be following this study guide. Research reveals that this experience of going through the story of the Bible is a great outreach opportunity. People who do not regularly go to church are interested in the story of the Bible. So, let’s take advantage of this great opportunity to invite friends, relatives, co-workers, and neighbors. We will begin the story of the Bible on the first Sunday of the year, January 5. It will be a great experience as we see this story unfold. What makes this experience even better is that God has a story for each one of us that fits into His Story. The Bible is such a fascinating book. One of the most fascinating characteristics about the Bible is that every time we read it, we learn something new and different. I am really looking forward to this experience.

Senior Adult Ministry Alright, I admit it. I watch Fox News as my major source of information, but my disclaimer is I don’t believe they are nearly as “fair and balanced” as they say they are. Now this admission is not meant to talk about news sources but instead is intended to speak to how I was pleasantly surprised when Fox News aired an hour long special on the life of Billy Graham which, in reality, turned out to be an unapologetic and clear presentation of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Though the plan of salvation was typical of Billy Graham, the message of the cross of Jesus was clearly, unmistakably, and powerfully presented in the hour long program. Furthermore, there was no political correctness by watering down the “Christ Alone” message proclaimed. Needless to say, I was caught off guard with the fact that a major news source would be so bold in this wishy-washy culture. I was struck by the thought that far too many churches today are not willing to be so bold. We are indeed living in the days spoken of as when men are not willing to “tolerate sound doctrine.” Now, I haven’t heard any reports about how Fox News has fared since the program was aired. Did they see a ratings decline? I’m certain they had some complaints, but they aired it knowing there would certainly be some. We, the church, should not be concerned about ratings and complaints. We only need to please one, and when we do, the Gospel of the One will not return void. Though I don’t believe Fox News is God’s approved choice for news, I can’t help but believe He was applauding them on this one occasion and it is His applause alone we should seek.

I have many fond memories of Christmas through the years and most of them are centered around the church, my family, and dear friends, just like many of you. I am glad to have a few lines to share those important moments with you. When I grew up, most of the churches my dad served didn’t offer a Christmas Eve worship experience. As I became an adult and started leading worship, these services became some of the most meaningful services. I especially remember Christmas Eves in Phoenix, Arizona, where we offered two different services, an earlier one for families and children and an 11 PM service which was a more traditional celebration with lots of carol singing, choir anthems, solos, communion, and the lighting of candles. It was similar to our services here at Tates Creek Christian Church. The 1,000 seat sanctuary was absolutely packed! There was one difference, though. We had a large pipe organ in the church there and the chimes were amplified through a speaker system in the 120 foot tower in front of the church. As worshipers left shortly after midnight, I would play carols on the chimes to send them on their way...and perhaps awaken the neighbors with the message of Christ’s birth being rung throughout the surrounding neighborhoods! Other memories include having our father awaken us at 4 AM to open presents! That’s right...in our house the kids were not the ones wanting to get up early...it was our dad that made us all get up! Once we were up, we would enjoy a great family breakfast together. Now, as the grandchildren and great-grandchildren join us, we celebrate on “whatever” day we can all get together and read the Christmas Scriptures together before opening presents and having a large dinner. I also have enjoyed making some traditions of my own that usually include having close friends over to my house and sharing a potluck dinner. It is also the time of the year that I go “all out” in decorating. Just ask my neighbors! Traditions change, but the message must never change! We come together to celebrate God’s Gift to us. Make some new traditions by

joining us for all the celebrations we offer and as announced in our publications over the next several weeks. ~ Don

Hello Tates Creek Family! Emily, Clare, and I have landed safely in Ethiopia! We spent the first couple of weeks exploring the city, getting our driver’s licenses (a two-day affair), getting acquainted with the culture, and beginning the process of applying for our work permits (we’ll need these to stay more than ninety days, so they’re kind of a big deal). Our big focus right now is learning the language and culture here. We’ve enrolled in a language school that is a 20-30 minute walk from the apartment we are renting. Walking is going to be a great way for us to practice what we’re learning and develop relationships with the people who live and work in our neighborhood. We cannot thank you enough for the love and prayers you all have blessed us with. Everything about our transition has been more smooth than we expected. I’m sure this was a gift from God.

My husband would argue that enduring Christmas music in October is evidence of his unconditional love for me. I have more than 500 songs, including eight renditions of Silent Night, on my holiday playlist. Christmas music is simply too beautiful to relegate to a couple of weeks a year, so I set aside at least three months to infuse our home with its melodies. There are very few Christmas songs I do not like, but there are some I consider bittersweet. I’ll Be Home for Christmas is one of those. When we moved to Kentucky and started attending Tates Creek in 1997, I was a newlywed, fresh out of college, and had only ever spent one Christmas away from my family in Florida. Though we were blessed to be near my husband’s family, I missed people, traditions, and places I’d held dear.Back then, when I heard I’ll be Home for Christmas, my mind raced to another place, to Christmases past. Home was somewhere different — it was the place I grew up. But slowly, something changed. A friend invited me to a circle. We joined a Sunday School class. We began serving in several areas of the church. Instead of sitting around feeling on the outside, we stepped inside and allowed ourselves to be enveloped by the hospitality and the love that are hallmarks of Tates Creek. We started “doing life” with the believers who were right there beside us. That meant learning their grandchildren’s names, entrusting our children to them, serving them, seeking their counsel, and mourning and celebrating life’s big and small moments together. Without even realizing when or how it happened, I started looking forward to decorating ornaments for the circle’s Angel Tree. The signatures on the cards we received in the Christmas card exchange box in the church lobby were more than just names from the Tates Creek directory, they were people who blessed our lives every day. I couldn’t wait for the Christmas Eve service to hear Tommy recite Jesus’ presence in all of the books of the Bible. Now, I am “home for Christmas” whenever I am surrounded by people whose lives are built on the truth and amazing love of Jesus Christ. Wherever you spend the holidays this year, I pray that instead of pining away for Christmases past, you’ll reach out to the people you are with now. Never forget the unchanging presence and power of a Savior whose name unites us and whose sacrifice makes us a family—the family of God!

The focus of Room In The Inn is to provide seasonal temporary shelter and hospitality to the homeless of Lexington. The heart and soul of this ministry is the participation of congregations and faithful volunteers who serve our guests for the winter months of November - March. This ministry provides us an opportunity to be a blessing to others and show them the love of Christ.

Our task at Tates Creek Christian: To host up to 14 men the second and fourth Thursday of each month, December through March. To provide them an evening meal and a place to sleep for the night. We also provide them a breakfast and a sack lunch to take with them the next day.

What we need: We ask Sunday School Classes or other groups to take a given week and serve as hosts throughout the year. Their job is to plan each week’s evening meal and provide hosts for the evening. We also need individual volunteers to help us in the following areas:Overnight Hosts - Men who will stay the night with our guests when needed. Set Up Crew - To set up the beds and room for the guests.Take Down Crew - To break down the beds and room the next morning.

We will be hosting on December 12 & 26. This is a wonderful ministry that will bless you as much as it does our guests! Please consider being a participant! Sign-up at the table in the foyer. For more information, contact Chris Lee at 684-7240.

Life Line Screening

It’s Angel Tree time again!! The trees are up and filled with names of children in need this Christmas season. The first tree is in it’s usual spot in the Main Foyer and the second is located in the Multi-Ministry Center. The names of the children on these trees come from Russell

Cave Church of Christ, the area that Russell Cave Church of Christ serves, and from Julius Marks Elementary. If you would like to sponsor a child from one of these two trees, select an angel and PLEASE SIGN UP on the sheet provided at that location, giving your name and phone number. All gifts will need to be wrapped, labeled, and returned by December 11. Contact Mary Furnish at 219-9111 for more information.

Tates Creek Christian Church is pleased to offer a preventive health event. Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will host their affordable, non-invasive and painless health screenings on Wednesday, December 4. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. In order to register for this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call 1-888-653-6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/community-partners.

Great Expectations Great expectations. We all have them at some point, great expectations about our relationships, our work, or some other area of our lives. We have been talking about this in our college small group over the last couple of weeks. Often, when we set expectations, especially expectations on other people, we are let down and disappointed. So what are we to learn about people and about God when our expectations are not met? Many make the choice to harden their hearts and put up barriers so that they can avoid the sting of disappointment. I am definitely guilty of this at times. Some people, though, can take this even further and apply it to God. They no longer trust God because they have been hurt by other people.

Psalm 22:2-5 says: “O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, and am not silent. Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the praise of Israel. In you our fathers put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. They cried to you and were saved; in you they trusted and were not disappointed.”

It is when we place our hope in the expectation of something or someone other than God, that we are left disappointed. Allow God to set your expectations. We need to expect people to fail and fall short in the same way that we ourselves do. But we can expect that God will never leave or forsake us and he will lead us to greater fulfillment than we ever could have dreamed of on our own if we will just trust Him!

The Slow Fade One of the most alarming statistics that you hear working in youth ministry is that up to 90% of your students will leave the church when they graduate high school. A lot of theories have been put forward to explain why there seems to be a drop off in college for students who grew up in church, but not a lot of actual research into the issue. So, when I came across the Faith in Flux study (2009) by the Pew Forum researching that very issue, I was surprised, both good and bad, by the results. It actually turns out that a little over half of people stay with the church of their youth, and another 35% switch from one church to another. But that still leaves about 10-15% of people who leave church altogether. Churches in America today cannot accept this as the status quo, but the main reason people leave church is the main takeaway.

People generally don’t leave the church over a personal crisis or conflict with the church body, the main reason people leave the church is that they slowly get out of the habit! When a person has slowly faded away from church, the break from affiliation is the natural next step. We aren’t losing the next generation to a generational disconnect, we are losing them to business and apathy!

Hebrews 10:24-25 is not an idle suggestion. Making church a priority and taking ownership in it is the key to a lasting faith, helping everyone in a family “hold fast to the confession of our hope” (Hebrews 10:23). Participating in worship and prayer together as a family is the most significant thing a parent can do to pass their faith on to their children. When families are committed to worship and prayer, the faith of their teenagers blossoms!

People Who Serve Children Make A Difference Every week in the children’s ministry the same thing happens. A large group of energetic children come to church. We worship together, we study God’s word, and we apply it to our lives. We play games, laugh, dance, and have fun. Every week these things are guaranteed to happen, but every week something makes a difference in the lives of one or two children that can’t be replaced or duplicated the exact same way again. That one thing is actually a someone, and every week it is a different someone. It’s not always adults or youth either, sometimes it is kids serving kids. Let me explain…this past week a little boy came to the early service for the first time. He was nervous and scared. So we partnered him with a great volunteer to help encourage him and keep him on the right track for the day. The volunteer was amazing and was right on the little boy’s level. He was friendly and talked to the little boy about things he knew the boy would like (GREAT JOB, MIKE!). He wasn’t scared anymore, but was still nervous until a 5th grade boy changed everything. Thaddeus, the 5th grader, stepped over and told the little boy that he could hang out with him. Thad wasn’t prompted or asked to get involved, but he knew it was the right thing to do. The instant that he did the little boy loved church. He told Thad stories. Great job, Thad! Mike made a difference! Thad made a difference! People who serve children… make a difference!

Critterland News November lessons have been showing children that God is with us—all the time!! We talked about Ruth and Naomi and how God was with them when they needed to find food, and how Ruth and Naomi helped each other as family.

We also took some time to learn the crazy names of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. Because they didn’t bow down to what others wanted them to

do and stood up for what they believed in, God protected them! The children also learned that even though it is hard to do the right thing sometimes, God will always take care of you.

Every month our little ones do a memory verse, and for the month of December it will be “God has given a son to us.” Isaiah

9:6. If you know any of the children from Critterland, help them out so they can get a prize for saying it all by themselves!!

I am in need of volunteers for the new year. Please contact me if you are interested in helping just one hour, one Sunday a month.

Craig Fowler . . . is an oral pathologist, which is a specialty of dentistry, and is a member of the faculty at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. He and his wife, Jenny, moved to Lexington from San Antonio, Texas, after Craig retired from the U.S. Air Force after 28 years of military service. Craig was baptized on October 14, 2013 and he and Jenny joined Tates Creek on October 27. A native of Dallas, Texas, Craig graduated from Texas Tech University in 1973 with a degree in chemical engineering. He received his DDS degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1976. After seven years as a general dentist in the U.S. Navy and in private practice, Craig decided to return to school at Emory University in Atlanta where he completed a residency in oral pathology. Jenny and Craig met there at Emory and were eventually married in 1995. They have two children, Mike and Meg. Mike and his wife, Betsy, live in Greenwood, SC, and have two daughters, Lena (3 ½ years) and Hannah (4 months). Meg and her husband, Jay, live in Ft. Worth, TX, and have a son Davisson (2 ½ years). Craig and Jenny both enjoy playing golf, walking their dogs, Annie and Sadie, watching UK sports, and visiting family. They are members of the Grace and Truth Sunday School class. They both feel blessed to live in such a great city as Lexington and especially blessed to be members of TCCC!
