Female Mayors and Gender Policies in a Developed Country ** Felipe Carozzi * London School of Economics and Political Science Andrés Gago ** CEMFI Abstract We study whether female mayors in Spain are more likely to engage in gender sensitive policies such as long-term care support for families, preschooling, or work and family life balancing services. Using panel methods and a fuzzy regression discontinuity design which focuses on mixed electoral races for the 2007 and 2011 municipal elections, we nd no evi- dence of female mayors being more likely to implement these policies at the local level. The results are consistent across specications. Conversely, we do nd signicant and robust evidence of dierences between parties in the probability of implementing these policies, suggesting that the gender of the politician is less important than partisan or ideological po- sition when it comes to these policy levers. Our results inform discussions on the impact of female representation on gender policies. Keywords: Female politicians, gender policies, long-term care.
