It’s a Miracle – Part 4 To my satisfaction, C.S. Lewis has discovered an essential point about miracles. He says, “In all these miracles alike the incarnate God does suddenly and locally something God has done or will do in general. Each miracle writes for us in small letters something that God has already written, or will write, in letters almost too large to be noticed, across the whole canvas of Nature.” In the feeding of the 5000 Jesus does suddenly and locally what God has already done. God has provided, and continues to provide sustenance for His people. But not only does God provide physical sustenance. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish and from nothing other than Himself feeds that large number of people. That means he feeds us with Himself. Another key image presented to us in this miracle story is that of the Holy Eucharist. Jesus has gathered before Him an assembly of His faithful followers. There are clear similarities in the language Matthew uses in the account of the feeding of the 5000 and the Last Supper. In both cases it was in the evening; in both cases they all sat down; in both cases Jesus takes bread and blesses it; in both cases he broke the bread and gave it to his disciples. In the feeding of the 5000 the disciples then give bread to the people. After Jesus’ death, resurrection and ascension, the Apostles continued the tradition of the Holy Eucharist and gave the bread to the people. The miracle of the feeding of the 5000 tells us something about who God is and what He is like. Our God is a God who magnifies the small, or even the infinitesimally small and makes very grand and good things with it. That is what He wants us to know about Him. This miracle, like all miracles glorifies God and is for our good. It tells us how God can and does provide for us. It tells us that God feeds us with His own self. He gives to us His own nature. It even tells us that He wants us to be part of his miraculous works. In the twinkling of an eye, Jesus could have just as easily filled the bellies of all 5000 people Himself without moving a muscle. Instead, Jesus says to the disciples, “you give them something to eat”. And through the disciples, Jesus does his miraculous work. And He’s ready to do the same with us. If we submit to Him, he will use us to glorify God and to bring about our greatest good. He will take our small, tiny souls and greatly expand and magnify them into holy souls.

The Prayer List

Prayer is a gift from God. It is a wonderful way to lift someone in prayer who is sick, someone in need or for anyone with special intentions. The Parish prayer list is for such purposes, however, it can become quite big and the print becomes smaller. So that all may be included and properly fit within page boundaries, the pray-er list will be renewed with a fresh start every first of the month. If you wish to place your name on the list once it is renewed, please call the parish office. Thank you for your patience and understand-ing.

“The Gathering” for V Encuentro Matthew 23:37

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her young under her wings, but you were unwilling!”

You may have seen the bulletin announcement for a meeting referred to as “The Gathering” in recent weeks. You may have wondered what it is all about. You may have asked a Notre Dame staff member about it. You may have been left wondering. All that is about to change! “The Gathering” is a parish-wide meeting about the Archdiocesan V Encuentro initiative. Encuentro is all about bringing people to Christ. Pope Francis has called upon all the baptized to live as missionary disciples. It’s part of the New Evangelization. Encuentro begins in the Hispanic community and extends outward from there to everyone. Archbishop Gustavo expects full participation in the V Encuentro initiative. The Archdiocese will host an all-day meeting for V Encuentro on Saturday, September 30 in San Antonio. Notre Dame will be sending a delegation to that meeting. “The Gathering” here at Notre Dame will be to introduce the rest of the parish to V Encuentro. (There were four previous Encuentros beginning back in the 1970s). We will also have a team from the Archdiocese visit us here at Notre Dame to help us prepare for Encuentro. Our Lord Jesus Christ deeply desires to gather all His beloved children and take them under His wing. Encuentro is a way for us to do that with Him! For more information, visit the Archdiocesan webpage at: https://www.archsa.org/v-encuentro

Back to Virtue, by Peter Kreeft

On the back cover is a jewel of a quote from Scott Hahn regarding this book, and I doubt I can say anything better about it than he has:

“Back to Virtue promises to establish Peter Kreeft as the Sage of our time. Never has a classical virtue theory enjoyed such an advocate – witty, wise and winsome – his defense of sanctified

common sense is both informed and infectious. Indeed, this is vintage Kreeft. From debunking ‘values clarification’ to expounding the meaning of hope (‘the forgotten virtue’), Kreeft is always lucid and utterly incapable of composing an

incoherent sentence. Indeed, I can’t think of a more contagious Christian thinker at the present time, nor of a book that is so readable and reasonable.”

The author asks in his introduction “Is virtue out of date?” He goes on to write “There used to be maps, diagrams, pictures of a complete human being. A very large part of those old maps were about virtues and vices, good and bad

qualities of character and life. But the old maps have fallen into disuse.” Kreeft wrote this book to dust off the old maps and prove to the reader that they still work

Celebrating 105 Years

Notre Dame Catholic School Annual Festival The festival is quickly approaching! As a parish school we need all your support!

We ask that you help us in the following ways:

1) Pray for a successful weekend – A community filled with faith, enthusiasm, community, fun and fundraising – and of course good weather!

2) PICK UP your packet! Packets will be mailed out on AUGUST 28th! You will find your festival packet in the Narthex with your name on it. Please pick up your packet and read the enclosed letter. The early bird drawing this year will be on September 6th with the prize again being $200 of lottery scratch off tickets. You should return your check for the raffle tickets and meal tickets in the envelope provided in your packet, PLEASE stick an address label or write your address on EACH of your raffle tickets AND on the return envelope – this will ensure that you are credited for your tickets. If everyone picks up their envelope, we will not have to use precious resources in mailing them out! We are anxious to see who will be the big scratch off winner, so return your envelope QUICKLY. If you cannot find your name, there are extra packets in the church and school office. They will also be able to help you if you want extra tickets and raffle tickets available.

3) Start Baking your cakes and cookies. It is suggested that each parish family provide 2 cakes and 2 dozen cookies, but more is always welcomed! The Cake Wheel is extremely popular and is a WIN-WIN for everyone.

4) We are looking forward to this year's festival and we are looking for exciting new silent and live auction items. We are hoping to revamp the silent auction! If you choose to donate please choose new or gently used items, certificates, homemade items, etc^ Please drop off your items in the church or school office.

5) Be prepared to say “YES” and volunteer a couple of hours at one of our booths or BBQ dinner. 6) We can still use your help! Please contact me if you are interested in serving on any of the

volunteer teams, I will put you in contact with the appropriate chairperson: some of the areas include: cake wheel, Cake room, Kids Korner, BBQ Dinner, and Auctions.

7) This year, the Daughters of Notre Dame will be hosting a prayer table. This prayer space will be in between the church and the social center, please make plans to stop in and say a prayer.

8) We are also looking for a golf cart to use on the days of the festival, if you have one, please contact Lezlie.

We will keep you informed weekly as to the progress and where we can use your help. Thank you very much for your support and generosity. If you have any suggestions or want to volunteer or if you have any questions at all – call or text Lezlie @ 830-739-1624 or Jeff @ 830-739-6617.

Save the Date – SEPTEMBER 16th & 17th!!! SEE YOU THERE! ! !
