ABOUT THE CAPITOL STEPS

The Capitol Steps began in 1981, at a Christmas party in the office of former Senator Charles Percy. Like most things in Congress, they never knew when to stop. Over the past thirty years, the Capitol Steps have recorded thirty-two albums, and appeared on “Good Morning America,” the “Today Show,” “20/20,” “Entertainment Tonight,” “Nightline,” CNN’s “Inside Politics,” and dozens of times on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered.” For the past twenty years, they’ve produced quarterly specials for public radio and have been featured in three national specials for public television. They’ve performed for five U.S. Presidents (six if you include Hillary.)

Many of the performers have worked on Capitol Hill, some for Republicans, some for Democrats, and some for members who sit firmly on the fence.

In fact, the current cast of the Capitol Steps has at one time or another infested the offices of eleven US Senators and seven Members of the House of Representatives. Most of these politicians have since been defeated or placed under investigation.

JON BELL is proud to live in a country where every schoolchild is told he can someday grow up to impersonate the nation’s first African-American President in a comedy show. After all, his background has prepared him for anything. He’s performed all over the Washington area in shows such as Dreamgirls, Crazy for You, Sugar, Finian’s Rainbow, and Jesus Christ, Superstar. He’s been Bernardo in West Side Story, an educational body puppet, a troll, a pig, Aladdin, a priest, a King, a hare, a giant, and a baby bear. Jon was a lead singer for several seasons at Busch Gardens (not to be confused with George Bush Gardens, which doesn’t exist!) and you might have seen him as “screaming fan” in a national Pepsi commercial. Or not. Either way, he’s very, very, very, very excited to be in the Steps!

BARI BIERN has been Stepping since 1993 and has appeared in several Capitol Steps off-Broadway runs. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Bari has performed extensively around the DC area. She currently reviews plays and videos for Metro Connection on WAMU-FM. Fans of the video game Star Trek: Legacy will recognize Bari as the voice of evil Vulcan scientist, T’Uerell. She is also a playwright/lyricist, whose first musical, A Dance Against Darkness: Living with AIDS, (with music by Roy Barber), was nominated for Helen Hayes Awards as Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Resident Musical. In 2006, the InSeries presented Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro: the Las Vegas Version with Bari’s lyrics and book by Elizabeth Pringle. Thanks to Scott, multi-talented husband/actor/artist/teacher extraordinaire for his love and support.

MARC IRWIN, despite being a highly educated musician who holds a doctorate in musical composition from Peabody University, has spent the past twelve years with the Capitol Steps. His Broadway credits include The Rink, Sunday in the Park with George, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, Romance Romance, City Of Angels, Crazy For You, Cats, The Mystery Of Edwin Drood and A Doll’s Life. At the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Marc was assistant conductor for Merrily We Roll Along, and assistant musical director for Bells Are Ringing, Where’s Charlie?, and Purlie. He was sound designer and keyboardist for Harry Belafonte from 1983-88 and has conducted for The Three Mo’ Tenors. His jazz CD releases include Crossings of the Spirit, A Child’s Play, Urbnergy, Handmade Music and the upcoming Three of a Kind. All of this has prepared him to play every song in the show in every key possible — and also some in modes not previously heard in western music — in order to accommodate the “preferences” of the singers in the cast. Go Yankees.

ANN JOHNSON joined the Capitol Steps in August of 1993. (Congress was in recess and it just seemed like the thing to do.) Prior to her seduction into the world of political satire, Ann received two Helen Hayes Award nominations for her portrayal of Trina in Studio Theater’s March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland. Other roles include Mama Rose in Gypsy , Sally in Stephen Sondheim’s Follies and the starring role in A Second Chance, a musical theater piece written for her by New York playwright, Terry Quinn. Ann hopes to remain in the Capitol Steps long enough to portray the first woman president — even if she has to use a walker to get on and off stage!

BRAD VAN GRACK, equally at home performing Shakespeare in London as musical comedy in Atlantic City, was chosen by Playbill on-line as the best featured actor in a musical for the Capitol Steps Off-Broadway at the Houseman Theatre. His favorite roles are Malvolio in Twelfth Night, Vernon in They’re Playing Our Song and Leo in Chapter Two. In addition to work in commercials, T.V. and film, Brad is an accomplished director and has the freakish ability to move his eyebrows and ears independently.

JAMIE ZEMAREL has been with the Capitol Steps since 1994. Before joining the Steps, James appeared as “Gaston” in the National tour of Gigi, and as “Aristede” in Can Can, at Harrah’s in Atlantic City with the New York City Rockettes. Other roles in his career have included “Jesus” in JC Superstar, “The Pirate King” in The Pirates of Penzance, and “Henry Higgins” in My Fair Lady, which is where he met his wife, Jeanne, who was “Eliza”!
