The first economic resources of the population were, along with cattle raising, those activities related to ironmongery, being well known for their forges and blacksmiths which gave the place a deserved reputation.
The town of Otxandio was founded between 1236-1254 by Diego Lopez de Haro in order to establish the route linking the Castilian plateau with the Basque coast.
OTXANDIOOn the 22th of July In 1936, during the Spanish Civil War was written the darkest page in the history of our people, when during the local Summer festival two planes raided the town just over Andikona Square where the market place was taking place, killing 61 civilians.
Today, Otxandio is a cheerful and lively town with a deeply rooted sense of community whose most characteristic expression is the so called auzolan. The word, in Basque language, means neighbour task, whe-reby through mutual help, neighbours help build or mend each others’ houses, rebuilt a chapel, repair public paths and roads or clear the woods for the benefit of all.
Small businesses, industries and tourism remain alive and thrivingin one of the few unspoiled places in Bizkaia, since the town is located right at the heart of two natural parks (Gorbea and Anboto) and beside the Urru-naga water reserve.
Throughout the year the town dwellers, knowing the great atmosphere that floods the main street, walk about to enjoy the company of relatives and friends. As a result, naturally intergenerational relationships develop for the enjoyment of them all.

HOUSINGIf you are after housing either for rent or buy you can consult a real-estate agency or check the local newspapers (Anboto).
There is not a list of houses for rent available for those who search accommodation in Otxandio. Therefore, the most efficient way is to ask the neighbors.
Accomodation either for rent or buy subsidized by the Basque Government tends to be cheaper than any other in the free market. If you want public subsidized accommodation you must address the so called Etxebide service. There they will inform you about the basic condi-tions necessary for the purchase of housing property, and in Alokabide they will inform you about the requirements needed to get a lease.

THE CHRISTMAS FAIR (THE THIRD SUNDAY IN DECEMBER).
Organized by Kementsu Elkartea, the craft and traditional products fair takes place just before Christmas. It’s a great opportunity to buy a wide variety of agricultural products such as wine, txakoli, cider, corn bread or sheep cheese from Otxandio which are offered in any of the 40 posts placed on the town square for the occasion.
OLENTZARO (DECEMBER THE 24TH)
Olentzaro is a mythical Christmas father just like Santa Claus. He is a humble and good-natured creature who lives isolated in the woods dedicated to making charcoal. He likes good food and drink, and on Christmas day he leaves the mountain to bring gifts to every home in Euskal Herria. Accompanied by txistularis (flute players), a parade through the village carrying on shoulders this famous mythological character is done, as traditional Christmas songs are sung. After the parade, the dantzaris (dancers) welcome him to the square with a Aurresku of honor, a dance to show respect. Later the heather pylon is lit, thus renewing the precious fire.
SAINT AGATHA’S EVE (FEBRUARY THE 4TH)
The old tradition to sing and chant to "Santa Ageda (Agate Deuna)" on February is well alive in this town. Every 4th of February villages and town streets all over the Basque Country see the St Agatha choruses singing in the Winter’s long, dark night . Along their route they beg for anything they are given, but especially eggs and homemade sausages Singers usually accom-pany their march with sticks or canes with which they rhythmically hit the ground.
TRADITIONS AND CELEBRATIONS
SAINT BERNABÉ (JUNE THE 11TH)
On June the 11th, organized by the Cultural Association Arkotxe, the celebration of St. Bernabe takes place in the area of Mekoleta, just outside the town. The festival includes music, dances, an open air meal and good company with friends and family
THE BONFIRES OF SAINT JOHN (JUNE THE 23RD)
That night, accompanied by the sounds of txistu, and singing and dancing, neighbors jump over the bonfires that are lit in various parts of town. The youngest, repeating an old habit, run to steal some lettuce. Elderly take branches of ash that will place in front of their homes to protect their residents. In the square stands an ash to protect all the people.
SAINT PETER’S EVE (JUNE THE 28TH)
This day also light fires, as in San Juan. It is an ancient custom that is not known in other locations. This day ash branches that were placed on the doors of the houses on the eve of San Juan are burned.
SANTA MAÑA (JULY THE18TH)
