The interior has been repainted to the original colors and we have a list of other projects that we would like to do to the office and waiting room area. That list includes a new floor, restroom, window repairs, heating and air conditioning, and electrical updates. The goal would be to retain as much of the depot look and feel as possible. We would like to thank all the people that have donated money and bought bricks. Brick sales will continue for as long as it will take to complete and pay for the proj- ect. If you are looking for a gift for the hard to buy person maybe a personalized brick would be just the right gift. Stop into Sweet Cicely, Frame It or the Cottage Café and pick up a form. You could also print one from the Amboy MN web site. So far we have spent $20,000 for the project and we expect that the final cost will be $30,000. We also know that sometime down the road a new cedar shingle roof will need to be installed. The biggest question that we have heard is “Now that you have it --- What are you going to do with it?” A committee has been formed and is currently researching the possibility of using the depot to house a “locally produced” store. This store would allow local peo- ple to have retail store front to sell their goods. At the time of sale a consignment fee would be collect- ed and used to support the expens- es of the operation. When a plan is finalized, we will send out a gener- al mailing. The Amboy Area Community Club completed gathering preliminary feed- back for “The Junction” project, which aims to put the defunct Amboy Middle School to good use as a multi-purpose community building. With approxi- mately 10 acres of land and about 47,000 square feet of building, there were over 150 ideas and suggested uses for the vacated school property. Dozens of community members gathered at the school on October 2nd and again on October 16th to develop a consensus of the possible uses for the building. Of the many suggested ideas the group of interested citizens nar- rowed the field to a few choices. They include utilizing the old cafeteria and small gymnasium as an event center with full kitchen and banquet facilities. Another popular idea is to renovate an area of the school and turn it into a firearms education center and indoor shooting range. The large gymnasium could be converted into a health and fit- ness areas open to the public and also provide space for Maple River School sporting events and practices. Community adult education classes would continue to be offered in some of the classrooms with other classroom areas being converted in apartments and retail space, possibly a grocery store. Most all in attendance wanted the school to create jobs and revenue for the community. They thought that The Junction should be a non-profit entity with some for-profit activities. Community members stated they were willing to support the facility through rents and activity fees. Most are willing to support an annual membership of $200. The next step in developing The Junction is to gather data on the build- ing and begin to estimate the costs of renovation. Small groups are being formed to look at the various areas of interest and to examine the facility’s infrastructure to determine if any haz- ardous materials exist that will add to the cost or even prohibit renovation. The Maple River School Board voted to approve an option to purchase, which gives the Amboy group one year (with an option for an additional year) to con- duct a feasibility study. The more community involvement the better!
