The theme for this year’s essay and art contests is “Recognizing the Past, Honoring the Present, and Cele-brating the Future.” Students are asked to research and share about a Hispanic person or event significant to Florida’s past, present and/or future.

Art Contest for Grades K-3: The Hispanic Heritage Month art contest is open to all Florida students in grades K-3, and two winners will be selected.

Essay Contest for Grades 4-12: The Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest is open to all Florida students in grades 4 through 12. Three winners will be selected: one elementary student (grades 4-5), one middle-school student (grades 6-8), and one high school student (grades 9-12). Winners will re-ceive a four-year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation

Florida Hispanic Heritage Month 2016 September 15–October 15: "Honoring Hispanic American Heroes: Hispanic American Veterans, Military Members, Law Enforcement Officers and First Responders”

More than 30 years of research supports the belief that a positive relationship endures between increased family engagement and student academic success. Additional research suggests that when fathers are actively involved in their child’s education, students:

Perform better academically;

Have fewer discipline problems; and

Become more responsible adults. On September 28, 2016, the Florida Department of Education will observe Dads Take Your Child to School Day statewide. This initiative is a wonderful opportunity for dads or other male role models to get involved in their child’s education and to highlight the significant difference they can make by taking a more active role.
