    There are many things about Christmas in Spainthat are similar to those of the US

    BUT there are also many differences!

    Do Spanish kids wait for Santa to come?

    Do the Reyes Magos have reindeer like Rudolph?

    NO! Kids in Spain open presents on January 6th. They haveChristmas Break from Dec 22 to Jan 9 every year. The

    actual holiday is called Da de los Reyes (Day of the Kings)

    NO! Kids in Spain wait for the REYES MAGOS. TheReyes Magos are the Wisemen. They come Jan 6th.

    NO! The Reyes Magos dont have reindeer like Santa.Instead, the Reyes Magos come riding on CAMELS!

    YES!Of course the lyrics are in Spanish, but the tune is the same

    NO!They eat their big Christmas dinner on ChristmasEve. Its called Nochebuena which means the goodnight. The dinner begins around 10pm and goes till 1am.It is a HUGE 5 course dinner (appetizer, salad & sides,

    the meat course, coffee/tea/after-dinner drinks, dessert)

    NO!Any reason for a party and Spanish people go nuts!They

    want to buy all new and all out for the occasion. They match anew dress with new shoes with new accessories with newmake-up with new jewelry with new purses. Its insane!

    Does the father walk his daughter down the aisle?

    What about the rings & vows etc?

    OFCOURSE..But Spanish receptions are even BIGGER!They are parties that go from 8 pm till 5 am the nextmorning. Its actually a party all night long!

    YES!Abride in Spain still has her daddy walk her down theaisle and give her away to the guy shes about to marry.

    YES!Of course they still have ringsbut with some differences.1. The Groom keeps the rings w/ himno ring bearer2. Saying vows is veryAmericanweddings are much more

    traditional in Spanish culture and almost always Catholic3. The rings are worn on the RIGHT-HAND index finger!

    4. Wedding rings dont have big rockstheyre only bands.

    In the US, when a man and woman are married,normally the woman takes the mans last name

    Ex: Henry Ford marries Elizabeth Taylor

    x They become Henry & Elizabeth Ford

    However, in Spain (and in most Spanish-speaking

    countries), this is not the case. Their last name(or, APELLIDO) does something else.

    So what happens?!?!

    Kids take ONE LAST NAME from both parents

    The most important last name comes from

    their father always (remember, Spanish-speakingculture is veryMachistamale dominated).

    The second last name comes from the mother.

    Both names that a kid receives are both lastnames that came from the father of their dadand the father of their mom.
