Wishes Do Come True

1 “You’re really going to take me with you?” Nidia questioned excitedly.

2 “Of course, muñeca. You’re old enough and skilled enough now,” her grandfather answered.

3 The thirteen-year-old had waited forever to hear those words.

4 Each year, her grandfather, father, and brothers had woken up before dawn for their

weekend of fly fishing at Lago La Plata. Nidia had longed to be part of the excitement and had

practiced casting her fishing line into any water she could find.

5 She had seen pictures of the tucunaré —the peacock bass—and their reds and golds, blues

and blacks enchanted her with their beauty. They were brightly colored streamers slipping

through the water. She longed to catch one, just to look at it, and then throw it back into the

refuge of its liquid home.

6 Grandfather, her abuelito, was another reason Nidia had longed to fish with the group.

Everyone wanted to ride with Grandfather. He could tell stories about Puerto Rico that made you

happy you lived there. She’d heard admiration for those stories in her brothers’ voices.7 She ran to give Samuel the good news.

8 “You get to go fishing with us?” he said, startled. “You don’t even know how to cast a

fishing line!”

9 “Oh yes I do,” she answered. “What do you think I do when you’re off fishing?”

Directions: In this section of the test, you will show how well you can read and understand writtenEnglish. There are five selections and some questions about each one. For each question, mark theletter of the correct answer on your answer sheet.

10 Nidia hardly slept the night before the trip. Every few minutes she turned and looked at the

clock. Four a.m. finally arrived, and she heard a car pull up. Looking out the window, she saw

her grandfather.

11 “Nidia,” her mother called, “time to get up.”

12 During breakfast, Nidia quietly asked her grandfather, “Would it be okay if I sat with you?”

13 Grandfather looked over at her, placed his right hand on his face, and scratched a finger

over his whiskers. “We’ll have to see.”

14 Nidia looked down at her empty plate, attempting to hide her regret. Then, as they walked

out to the cars, Grandfather leaned down to her and said, “Why don’t you get into my car?”

15 She jumped into the car, and a few minutes later, Grandfather joined her.

16 “Did I ever tell you about the time I caught a black sea bass with my own two hands?” hebegan. Nidia leaned back and closed her eyes. This was going to be her best trip ever.

Junior Firefighters

1 Chief Alonzo walked into the fire station’s cafeteria and announced, “Hey everybody, meet

our two new members from the junior firefighter program, Jaime Ortíz and Rubén Santiago.”

2 Everybody stopped eating and shook the boys’ hands. They were happy to meet the new

young men from the program. The program works with students age 16 and up. It is anexhausting course with more than 150 hours of training in everything from how to battle fires to

providing basic emergency medical care.

3 “It sure has been hard to work all of this in between school and my friends,” said Jaime to

Rubén. “I think sometimes I was sleeping with my eyes open.”

4 Rubén frowned. He had loved every minute of training and had not minded changing his

schedule to fit it in. In fact, he had matured as he gained confidence in new skills.

5 “Your uniforms are hanging on the rack,” explained Chief Alonzo. “When that fire bellrings, you have 60 seconds to get it on and hop on the truck.”

6 Suddenly, Jaime looked up. “We only get a minute to put on rubber boots, fire pants and

coat, a hood, gloves, a helmet, and that mask thing that holds our air bottle?”

7 “It is called an SCBA or self-contained breathing apparatus,” explained Rubén. “You want

to make sure it’s on right because it can save your life! Haven’t you practiced putting on your

uniform before?”

8

“Not really,” Jaime admitted softly. Rubén shook his head. He remembered how long ithad taken him to learn to do it quickly.

9 Chief Alonzo nodded at his men. Everybody knew which member would probably be

joining their unit in a few years.

An Ancient Game

1 Did you know that an ancient Indian tribe in Puerto Rico played a game that is a little bit

like soccer? Batey was a game played by the Taíno Indians. Although soccer did not originate

from Batey, the two games have many similarities. There is some proof that Batey was also

played in some form in México and other countries in Central America and South America.

2  Batey was played by the Taínos on a paved Batey court, often lined with stones. The game

usually consisted of male players only, although sometimes women joined in. Each team had

between 10 and 30 players, and the game was often played by two opposing tribes as a way to

settle disagreements without fighting.

3 During the game, the ball was not allowed to come to a standstill on the ground or to go out

of bounds. The game resembled soccer in that the ball could be kicked with the feet, struck with

the shoulders, elbows, head, hips, or knees, but it was not to be touched with the hands.4 The ball used for the game was called a batu by the Taínos. It was made of rubber and was

both extremely heavy and quite bouncy and quick. Due to this fact, players wore belts and pads

for their protection. These were made of stone and were very heavy. Can you imagine wearing a

belt or knee pads made of heavy stone while you are playing soccer? You would probably run

like a duck! Whether the players actually wore these accessories is unknown, but they have been

preserved on stone pictures known as petroglyphs. Some people think that they actually used

belts and pads made from wood when they played the game.

5 In modern times, we, the descendants of the Taínos, still play Batey. The game we play

consists of two teams, with twelve men and women on each, and today the teams have an

additional player they call the goalie!

To Text or Not to Text

Johnny is in the 8th grade. He just recently got a cell phone for his birthday. Although cell

phones are not allowed to be turned on at school, Johnny kept his on vibrate continuously, even

during classes. Read the passage to find out what happens when Johnny gets caught with his

cell phone in class.

1 Johnny got a cell phone for his birthday. It was black and shiny and Johnny loved it! He

was never without his phone and always had it on. Although it violated school rules to have cell

phones on in class, Johnny kept the phone on vibrate, so the teachers weren’t aware of it. He did

not think of what could happen if he were ever caught with it on.

2 One day during history class, Johnny felt his phone vibrating. He knew he should not

answer it; yet he could not resist the temptation to see who was calling. Looking carefully

around, he saw Mr. Villarreal at the front of the room monitoring the class while they took a test.Johnny quickly checked his phone. His best friend, Anthony, had sent him a text message.

“That’s pretty brave,” thought Johnny, especially since Anthony sat near the front of this class!

Johnny read the message and was about to reply when Mr. Villarreal’s voice boomed above him,

“I’ll take that, Johnny.”

3 Johnny nearly jumped from his seat. There, standing next to his desk, was an unhappy Mr.

Villarreal. Johnny started to make up an excuse, but Mr. Villarreal interrupted him. “See me after

class, young man,” he said, taking the phone away from Johnny.

4 Johnny sank into his desk and tried to concentrate on the test. He looked up once to find

Anthony turning around in his chair. Anthony whispered, “Sorry.” Johnny knew he was in a lot

of trouble. Violating school rules could result in suspension.

5 When the bell rang, Johnny took his test up to Mr. Villarreal’s desk and waited. Mr.

Villarreal asked him, “Why were you using the phone during class time, Johnny?”

6 Johnny explained that he just got the phone over the weekend. Too excited about having

one, he did not think about the consequences of carrying it during school hours. He apologized

and promised it would never happen again. Then he waited for his punishment. Mr. Villarrealhanded Johnny the phone and simply said, “Please obey school rules. I will let this incident go;

however, if I see your phone on again during school hours, I will have to take it away for the rest

of the school year.”
