Antecedentes
Surge durante la segunda Guerra Mundial, luego y con

Etapas de un ejercicio de I.O.
Básicamente la I.O. sigue los siguientes pasos:
La observación del problema
La construcción de un modelo matemático que contenga los elementos esenciales del problema
La obtención en general, con al ayuda de algoritmos implementados informáticamente, de las mejores soluciones posibles.
La calibración e interpretación de la solución y su comparación con otros métodos de toma de decisiones. Jerry

Formulación matemática básica en un problema de I.O.
Dos quebradores extraen dos tipos diferentes de materiales, los cuales son sometidos a un proceso de trituración, con tres grados: alto, medio y bajo. Las compañías han firmado un contrato para proveer de material a una planta de fundición, cada semana, 12 toneladas de material de grado alto, 8 toneladas de grado medio y 24 toneladas de grado bajo. Cada una de las empresas tiene diferentes procesos de fabricación. El coste por día del quebrador A es de 180 y el B es de 160 ($miles), la producción por tonelada día es la siguiente: Alto A= 6, B=1, Medio A=3, B1 y Bajo A=4, B=6.

Solución
Según los procesos de trituración de los dos quebradores y el contrato
firmado para proveer del material a una planta de distribución y basados en las necesidades de requerimientos
de material con lo cual cumpla una minimización de costos, el quebrador
deberá operar 5 días para el quebrador X y 1 día para el quebrador
Y ajo un costo de 112 dólares.

Conclusión
Hemos pasado de la definición del problema a su formulación matemática.
Error de especificación, el error más frecuente consiste en descuidar las limitaciones (restricciones, características de las variables, etc,)
En el ejemplo anterior:
Todas las variables son continuas (admitimos fracciones de día)
Existe un único objetivo (minimizar los costes)
