Cuando de aniversarios se trata, siempre nos gusta recordar números redondos. Y no se me ocurre mejor manera que este recorrido para celebrar que Unipublic lleva 40 años organizando La Vuelta. ¡Qué de emociones pueden acumularse en cuatro décadas! Corredores que ya son historia viva del ciclismo, ediciones memorables, etapas apasionantes e infinidad de momentos que han vivido varias generaciones de aficionados junto a la familia que forma la organización de La Vuelta. Esta es nuestra manera de rendirles un homenaje a todos ellos.

Es también un honor comprobar cómo, año tras año, La Vuelta sigue creciendo y evolucionando, dentro y fuera de nuestras fronteras. Cada edición nos permite mejorar, desarrollar nuestra identidad, pero sobre todo, aprender. Descubrimos a la vez que confirmamos aquello que nos hace únicos, especiales, diferentes. Definimos lo que queremos mostrar y ofrecer al público y al pelotón internacional que nos visita cada año, mejorando más si cabe la participación del anterior.

Los finales explosivos, en alto, las salidas y las metas inéditas. Todo ello nos permite acompañar al espectador en su descubrimiento del territorio. Y eso nos fascina. Este año, Les Praeres en Nava o el Balcón de Bizkaia se preparan para brillar en 190 países del mundo.

Nuestra primera pincelada será trazada el 25 de agosto en el Centre Pompidou de Málaga, símbolo de cultura, arte y modernidad. Seguiremos el collage por Andalucía, Murcia y Castilla-La Mancha. Dibujaremos Castilla y León: en La Covatilla y La Camperona alzaremos el pincel para poder llegar hasta Galicia, Asturias y Cantabria. Territorio Vuelta. El viento que sople en Estaca de Bares nos llevará hasta el País Vasco antes de la traca final andorrana, donde La Gallina prevé no dejar pollo con cabeza. Tres semanas de pura emoción. Una pasión compartida que nos impulsa desde hace ya 40 años pero una ilusión que se mantiene viva, como si se tratara del primer día.

When we think of anniversaries, we always like to think of round numbers. And I can think of no better way to celebrate Unipublic’s 40th anniversary as organiser of La Vuelta than with this route. These four decades have been full of emotions! Riders that are now part of cycling’s living history, memorable editions, amazing stages and countless moments experienced by several generations of fans along with those who are part of the La Vuelta organisation family. This is our way of paying homage to them all.

It is also an honour to see how La Vuelta continues to grow and evolve, year after year, both within our borders and beyond. Each and every edition allows us to improve, to develop our identity and, above all, to learn. We also both discover and confirm that which makes us unique, special and different. We define what we wish to display and offer to the public as well as to the internal peloton that visits us every year, while improving the previous year’s participation whenever possible.

The explosive high-altitude finales, the unprecedented departures and finish-lines… All of that allows us to accompany the spectator as he discovers the territory. And that truly fascinates us. This year, Les Praeres in Nava and the Balcón de Bizkaia prepare to shine for 190 countries worldwide.

Our first brushstroke will take place on the 25th of August in Malaga’s Pompidou Centre, a symbol of culture, art and modernity. We will continue our collage through Andalusia, Murcia and Castilla-La Mancha. We will draw Castilla y León: in La Covatilla and La Camperona we will take our brushstroke upwards until we reach Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria. Vuelta Territory. The wind that blows at Estaca de Bares will take us to the Basque Country before the final leg in Andorra, where La Gallina will surely take its toll on all the riders. Three emotion-packed weeks. A shared passion that has been pushing us for the past 40 years and an enthusiasm that continues to inspire us, just as it did on the very first day.

30 VISITAS A MÁLAGALa salida oficial de La Vuelta 2018 será la 30ª visita de la ronda española a Málaga capital. La primera fue en 1936, segunda edición de La Vuelta, con una salida y una meta rumbo a Granada y desde Sevilla, respectivamente.

BONIFICACIONESLa carrera mantiene el mismo formato de bonificación, que premiará con 10, 6 y 4 segundos a los tres primeros de cada etapa, respectivamente, y con 3, 2 y 1 segundo a los primeros corredores en pasar por cada sprint intermedio.

PUNTOSAdemás de por ser líderes de la general, los ciclistas pelean también por la clasificación por puntos o por ser los mejores escaladores de cada edición. Los puntos se entregan según el siguiente sistema: obtiene 25 puntos al primer clasificado de etapa, 20 el segundo, 16 el tercero, 14 el cuarto, 12 el quinto y luego desde 10 hasta 1 entre el sexto y el decimoquinto. Los sprints intermedios premian con 4, 2 y 1 punto a los tres primeros ciclistas en superar cada uno.

30 VISITS TO MALAGAThe official departure of La Vuelta 2018 will be the Spanish tour’s 30th visit to the capital city of Malaga. The first one took place in 1936, during La Vuelta’s second edition, where it hosted both a finish-line following a departure from Seville, and a departure that headed towards Granada.

BONUSESThe race continues to have the same bonus points system that awards 10, 6 and 4 seconds to the first three riders in each stage, respectively, and 3, 2 and 1 seconds to the first three riders to complete each intermediate sprint.

POINTSIn the Vuelta, not only the general classification is at stake, riders also fight to be first in the points classification, or to become King of the Mountain in each edition. Points are obtained through the following system: 25 points are given to the stage winner, 20 to the rider that takes second place, 16 to the rider that comes third, 14 to 4th place, 12 to 5th place and then from 10 to 1 point between 6th and 15th place, respectively. Intermediate sprints award 4, 2 and 1 points to the first three riders to complete each one.

MÁLAGA, LA CIUDAD DE LOS MUSEOS

Málaga es una de las ciudades del mundo con más centros de arte relevantes por habitante. El Museo Picasso, el Museo Carmen Thyssen, el Centro de Arte Contemporáneo y el Museo de Bellas Artes de Málaga son algunos de los ejemplos más reseñables.

Abarcar más de un siglo de periodo artístico: es el ambicioso objetivo que, desde hace 40 años, cumple el Centre Pompidou. Su sede central, en París, cuenta con una colección de más de 100.000 obras que comprenden un recorrido por el arte contemporáneo desde 1905. Su homólogo en Málaga es un colorido y moderno edificio, que contrasta con la postal tradicional del puerto pesquero que se ubica a sus espaldas. Un proyecto innovador que, desde el año 2015, sirve de enlace entre la obra del museo parisino y el público español así como el multitudinario turismo extranjero que visita Málaga cada año.

En sus salas pueden disfrutar de casi un centenar de obras, cedidas por la amplísima colección francesa, que se renuevan cada dos años y medio, y que goza, asimismo, de diferentes exposiciones temporales. Para poder acercar a todos los públicos las distintas corrientes artísticas, el Centre Pompidou de Málaga nutre sus exposiciones con diferentes programas de música, danza, teatro, espectáculos, ciclos de cine y conferencias.

Los artistas que componen la colección del Pompidou cubren estilos muy diferentes, pero cumpliendo un innegociable sello de calidad. Pintores como Henri Matisse, Vassily Kandinsky o Robert Delauney están muy presentes entre las obras de la colección y, por supuesto, Pablo Picasso, oriundo de Málaga, sin el cual sería difícil entender el arte en el siglo XX.

La Vuelta conoce Málaga, una ciudad que ha visitado en numerosas ocasiones (29, entre salidas y metas). El paso número 30 será sin duda especial ya que, por primera vez, lo hará con la intención de conocer y mostrar al mundo la ciudad a través de su cultura, su arte y sus museos. MÁLAGA, THE CITY OF MUSEUMS

The city of Malaga has one of the greatest concentrations of important art centres per capita in the world. The Picasso Museum, the Carmen Thyssen Museum, the Contemporary Art Centre and the Malaga Fine Arts Museum are some of its most notable examples.

For the past 40 years, the Pompidou Centre has been fulfilling the ambitious goal of housing artwork spanning over a century. Its Paris headquarters features a collection of over 100,000 works of art that date from 1905 to the contemporary period. Its Malaga counterpart is a colourful, modern building that stands in stark contrast to the traditional fishing port found just behind it. Since 2015, this innovative project has served as a link between the Paris museum and the Spanish public, as well the multitudes of foreign tourists that visit Malaga each year.

Its halls house almost one hundred works of art, ceded by the vast French collection, that are renewed every two and a half years, and also contain different temporary exhibits. In order to bring people closer to the various artistic movements, Málaga’s Pompidou Centre fills its exhibits with different musical, dance and theatre programs, including shows, cinema series and conferences.

The artists that make up the Pompidou collection cover very different styles, but are all of the highest quality. Painters such as Henri Matisse, Vassily Kandinsky and Robert Delauney are widely represented in the collections and, of course, Málaga’s own Pablo Picasso, without whom it would be difficult to make any sense of 20th century art.

La Vuelta knows Malaga well and has visited it on numerous occasions (29 times, including both departures and finish-lines). The 30th time will no doubt be special as, for the first time, we will do so with the intention of both discovering and showcasing the city through its culture, its art and its museums to the rest of the world. Its people’s passion for sports, its unbeatable climate and its enviable quality of life all make Málaga one of the ten best European cities to live in according to the Eurobarometer. This summer, Málaga will become an artistic and cycling epicentre for thousands of people.

MÁLAGAManuel Domingo de Larios fue el último Marqués de Larios, falleció en París sin descendencia. La familia Larios creció a través del desarrollo del sector textil y azucarero en Málaga. Su principal obra fue la Calle del Marqués de Larios, una de las primeras calles comerciales de España y actualmente un centro neurálgico para el ocio y las compras en la capital malagueña. Mide 350 metros y en ella se situará la primera meta de La Vuelta 2018, concretamente en la Plaza de la Constitución. Será nuestro pequeño homenaje a la Carta Magna que cumple 40 años.

Manuel Domingo de Larios, the last Marquis of Larios, passed away in Paris with no descendants. The Larios family grew through the development of Malaga’s textile and sugar industry. Its main creation was the Calle del Marqués de Larios, one of Spain’s first commercial streets and currently a leisure and shopping nerve centre for the Malaga capital. It is 350 metres long and is where the first finish-line of La Vuelta 2018 will be located, specifically in the Plaza de la Constitución. It will be our little tribute to the Carta Magna that also turns 40 this year.

Málaga is Vuelta territory, and a traditional enclave with over 3000 years of history. Proof of its cultural legacy lies in the quality and quantity of museums that line its streets. Many of them will witness first-hand as 176 riders ride past, following their departure from the La Vuelta 2018 starting line. The first to see them ride past will be the Pompidou Centre, which possesses one of Europe’s best collections of modern art, and will be the departure point for the inaugural prologue.

ITT. La Vuelta will commence with an individual time-trial for the first time in 9 years. Its route, featuring a small slope will, in theory, only serve to name the first leader of the general classification. Differences will be minimal between the 176 riders that will commence in the Malaga prologue.

The peloton will leave the sea behind and head towards the mountains that frame the natural area of Caminito del Rey. Its steep slopes that wind between the peaks of the Malaga mountain range crowned Columbian rider, Esteban Chaves, in 2015 who, not only won the stage, but also wore La Roja. The Malaga locality, known for its “donkey taxis”, is the perfect example of Malaga’s characteristic contrast between the sea and the mountains. The Murcian municipality that has prospered around its caves and underground waters is protected by the Nogalte Castle, built during the 13th century which, from its privileged position, has seen the city grow into what it is today.

TALAVERA DE LA REINALa última vez que Talavera de la Reina recibió una etapa de La Vuelta fue en 2011 con una salida rumbo a San Lorenzo del Escorial en la que se impuso Joaquim ‘Purito’ Rodríguez, vestido con La Roja. Su enclave privilegiado, junto al río Tajo, convirtió a esta ciudad en un asentamiento de culturas que se remontan a la prehistoria: el Imperio Romano, los musulmanes y los católicos han tenido a Talavera como una zona de referencia por su situación geográfica y su acceso al agua.

The last time that Talavera de la Reina hosted a La Vuelta stage was in 2011, with a departure that then led the peloton towards San Lorenzo del Escorial. This stage was eventually won by Joaquim ‘Purito’ Rodríguez, who wore La Roja. Its privileged location, next to the Tajo River, has made this city a settlement for various cultures going back to prehistoric times: the Roman Empire, the Muslims and the Catholics have all had Talavera as a place of reference for its geographical location and its access to water.

Tras la victoria de Simon Yates en 2016, la localidad orensana, volverá a ser un enclave privilegiado y decisivo para una de las etapas de esta edición.

If there is a place to see, to feel the passing of time, to listen to the silence, to smell the purest nature and to savour life, that place is the Ribeira Sacra. MOMBUEY Zamora seguirá siendo protagonista en la undécima etapa. El pelotón comenzará a rodar desde la pequeña localidad castellana de Mombuey, famosa por la iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. Este templo, edificado en el siglo XIII, está coronado por una torre única, cuya construcción se atribuye a los caballeros templarios y que observará, desde su altura, la marcha de los ciclistas hacia tierras gallegas.

Zamora will continue to be the protagonist during stage 11. The peloton will start riding from the small Castilian locality of Mombuey, famous for its Church of Our Lady of the Assumption. This temple, built during the 13th century, is crowned by a solitary tower, whose construction is attributed to Templars, which will watch over the riders as they pass on the way to Galician territory.

MID-MOUNTAIN. This stage is the longest in this edition of La Vuelta. It features a winding terrain that will be favourable for escapes to take place, as well as three 3rd category climbs and one 2nd category climb. It is likely that a small group of favourites will finish first, as was the case in 2016 at the exact same finish-line.

MID-MOUNTAIN. A deceiving stage, upon first glance, that will be beneficial to sprinters. Rouleurs will have to face rugged Galician territory, which will take its toll. Teams will try to stay strong in order to neutralise possible escapes but it will be difficult to control them.

MEDIA MONTAÑA. Una etapa engañosa que, a primera vista, será propicia para los sprinters. Los rodadores tendrán que enfrentarse al terreno gallego, muy quebrado, y que generará mucho desgaste. Este puerto permitió a Nairo Quintana vestirse de rojo en 2016, año en el que ganó La Vuelta. Una historia similar a la de Alberto Contador en 2014, que también se hizo con La Roja en esta durísima rampa, antes de terminar en lo más alto del podio de Santiago de Compostela al ganar su tercera Vuelta.

The peloton returns to Castilla y León in order to face its old acquaintance: the Alto de La Camperona, in the Sabero Valley, that will welcome La Vuelta for the third time. This mountain pass allowed Nairo Quintana to wear the red jersey in 2016, the year in which he won La Vuelta. Likewise with Alberto Contador in 2014, who also won La Roja in this extremely difficult climb, before taking the highest spot on the podium at Santiago de Compostela, following his third La Vuelta win.

MOUNTAIN. This stage features an extremely tough finale that will make a difference to the general classification. Before climbing La Camperona, the peloton will have to overcome another mountain pass, Puerto de Tarna (km 105,5), which will whittle down the riders in the lead. Su pasado, de especial importancia durante la época romana, gira en torno a este accidente fluvial que atrajo a mineros de muchas zonas de la península. En 2016, David de la Cruz hizo temblar el liderato de Nairo Quintana con una escapada impensable desde la salida en Cistierna que le permitió arrebatarle al colombiano La Roja, aunque solo fuera por un día.

The history of Cistierna would not be what it is without the Esla River. Its past, of particular importance during Roman times, revolves around this river formation that attracted miners from all over the peninsula. EJEA DE LOS CABALLEROSLa Vuelta sale por primera vez del municipio aragonés de Ejea de los Caballeros. ANDORRA. NATURLANDIALos que disfruten de la naturaleza y las actividades que propone el parque de aventuras de Naturlandia verán muy de cerca a los corredores de La Vuelta trepando por La Rabassa y sus explosivas rampas. Este puerto se ha subido en cuatro ocasiones, aunque solo en una de ellas se disputó el final de etapa. Fue en la 7ª etapa de La Vuelta 2008, y el italiano Alessandro Ballan se hizo con la victoria y un efímero maillot rojo, que perdió al día siguiente.

Those who enjoy nature and the activities on offer at the Naturlandia nature park will see the La Vuelta riders up close as they climb La Rabassa and its explosive slopes. This mountain pass has been climbed on four occasions, though only one of those was a stage finale. It was the 7th stage of La Vuelta 2008, and the Italian rider Alessandro Ballan took the victory and the ephemeral red jersey, which he lost the following day.

More than 7 kilometres, with an average incline of 8% and slopes of up to 15%. This is how three demanding weeks of competition will come to an end for the peloton. The Coll de la Gallina, an Andorran mountain pass that has been climbed three times before in the history of the Spanish tour, will be the deciding stage that will determine who will win the right to wear La Roja in the final celebration in Madrid.

MOUNTAIN. Very short but very tough stage, with an accumulated inclination of almost 4000 metres spanning over 105km. The peloton will climb La Comella, Beixalis, Ordino, Beixalis, La Comella again and La Gallina. If the race leader struggles during the previous stage, he may lose La Vuelta.

MONTAÑA. Etapa muy corta pero durísima, con un desnivel acumulado de casi 4.000 metros y de 105 kilómetros de recorrido. El pelotón subirá La Comella, Beixalis, Ordino, Beixalis, la Comella de nuevo y La Gallina. Si el líder llega justo de fuerzas a esta etapa, puede perder La Vuelta.

FLAT. Final day that will serve as a tribute to the rider wearing La Roja. It will consist of a short route, where riders can ride slowly, but with an intermediate sprint and an arrival for explosive sprinters, which may decide who wins the green jersey, just like last year.

LA ESENCIA DE LA VUELTAAntes de la segunda jornada de descanso, el pelotón afrontará tres fi nales consecutivos en alto: La Camperona, Les Praeres de Nava y Lagos de Covadonga. Este último es ya uno de los clásicos de la ronda española, y su presencia siempre es sinónimo de fi nal espectacular. Quien se alce con la victoria el 9 de septiembre, unirá su nombre al de otros grandes corredores como Nairo Quintana, Marino Lejarreta, Pedro Delgado y Laurent Jalabert, que ya saben lo que es imponerse en esta cima. La primera vez que La Vuelta subió este mítico puerto de montaña fue en 1983. Desde entonces lo ha visitado hasta en 20 ocasiones, cumpliéndose este año el 35 aniversario de su descubrimiento ciclista.

THE ESSENCE OF LA VUELTABefore the second rest day, the peloton will face three consecutive high-altitude fi nales: La Camperona, Les Praeres in Nava and Lagos de Covadonga. The last one is already a classic in the Spanish tour and its presence is always synonymous with a spectacular fi nish. He who takes the victory on the 9th of September, will add his name to an impressive winners list already featuring the names of Nairo Quintana, Marino Lejarreta, Pedro Delgado and Laurent Jalabert, who know very well what it means to win that climb. La Vuelta fi rst climbed this mountain pass in 1983. It has since visited it on 20 occasions, now marking it’s 35th year since it’s cycling discovery.
