FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Tarjetas, villancicos, cuna y niños de Dios Una de las muchas tarjetas de Navidad que recibí fue de Nana Micaela del Distrito de la Misión. Llegué a conocerla cuando estaba en San Pedro. Ella escribió: "Todavía puedo hacer cientos de rosarios para la Legión de María ... pero a los 93 años, ya no soy tan fuerte como antes". Uno nunca es demasiado viejo para hacer algo significativo. Dios bendiga su corazón!Se ha convertido en una tradición en nuestra iglesia cantar el estribillo del villancico "O Ven, déjanos adorarlo" en la Elevación del Anfitrión y el cáliz durante la octava de Navidad. Es un poderoso recordatorio de que, incluso cuando conmemoramos la venida de Jesús hace 2.000 años, Él sigue viniendo a nosotros cuando celebramos la Eucaristía.Como en el pasado, en la víspera de Navidad, entre la misa de vigilia en español (7PM) y la misa nocturna en inglés (medio) (10PM), fueron los villancicos de la co‐munidad tongana. Este año, sin embargo, hubo algo diferente. Cinco jóvenes tocaron villancicos con campanas musicales de latón. Las campanas fueron donadas por la familia Márquez en memoria del difunto Vince que amaba este tipo de música. El Sr. Scott, de la preparatoria Capuchi‐no, enseñó a cinco jóvenes cómo jugarlos. Después de horas de ensayo y apretando estas horas en sus actividades esco‐lares, Afa, Sina, Catherine, Tina, Lose y Sioeli, que se llaman Hijos de Dios, estaban listos. Jugaron Silent Night y Away in a Manger. Fue asombroso. Volvieron a tocar al comienzo de la misa nocturna en la que se procesaron 60 velas especiales para celebrar el 60 aniversario de nuestra iglesia actual. El sonido de Silent Night con campanas musicales combinaba perfectamente con la procesión de velas a través de la oscu‐ra iglesia. En lugar de jugar juegos de computadora o hacer otras co‐sas, esos cinco jóvenes se dedicaron a horas de ensayo para compartir la alegría de la Navidad. Son lo que Sofía Aragón, que representa a México en el reciente concurso de Miss Universo, llama "modelo a seguir". Tenemos que enseñarles que quienes son ya son increíbles ”. Estoy sorprendido. *** En la misa española de las 10 de la mañana del día de Navi‐dad, el p. Joe Spieler, SJ, distribuyó pedazos de paja que pidió a la gente que pusieran en la cuna del niño Jesús. El popote representa cualquier intención que uno desee pedirle al Niño Jesús. Puede ser salud, estabilidad en el tra‐bajo, unidad en la familia o cualquier cosa que la persona desee. Luego se le pidió a la gente que procesara los pedazos de paja y los colocara en la cuna de Jesús. Fue una experi‐encia conmovedora. ¡Deseo que tus deseos de Año Nuevo se hagan realidad!

Cards, Carols, Crib & Children of God One of the many Christmas cards I received was from Nana Micaela of the Mission District. I came to know her when I was at St. Peter’s. She wrote, “I’m still able to make hun‐dreds of rosaries for the Legion of Mary… but at 93 years, I’m not as strong as before.” One is never too old to do any‐thing significant. God bless her heart! It has become a tradition in our church to sing the refrain of the carol “O Come Let us Adore Him” at the Elevation of the Host and the chalice during the Christmas octave. It is a powerful reminder that even as we commemorate the coming of Jesus 2,000 years ago, He continues to come to us when we celebrate the Eucharist. As in the past, on Christmas Eve, in between the Spanish vigil mass (7PM) and the English (Mid) Night Mass (10PM), was the carols by the Tongan community. This year, how‐ever, there was something different. Five youngsters played carols using brass musical bells. The bells were donated by the Marquez family in memory of the late Vince who loved this kind of music. Mr. Scott of Capuchino High School, taught five youngsters how to play them. After hours of rehearsal and squeezing these hours in their school activi‐ties, Afa, Sina, Catherine, Tina, Lose and Sioeli who go by the name Children of God, were ready. They played Silent Night and Away in a Manger. It was awesome. They played again at the start of the Night Mass wherein 60 special can‐dles were processed in celebration of the 60th anniversary of our present church. The sound of Silent Night with mu‐sical bells matched perfectly the candle procession through the darkened church. Instead of playing computer games or doing other stuff, those five youngsters devoted themselves to hours of re‐hearsal to share the joy of Christmas to us. They are what Sofia Aragon representing Mexico in the recent Miss Uni‐verse contest, calls “role model.” Sofia was an early favorite to win the crown, not because of her beauty, though she is stunningly beautiful, but because of the answer she gave to Steve Harvey when asked why she wasn’t nervous. She said that it is because the pageant “was not looking for a model. It is looking for a role model.” Later when she chosen for the final three, she was asked “What is the most important thing we should be teaching young girls today?” She replied, “. . . the importance of their true val-ue. We see so [much] perfection in social media. Perfect lives. Perfect bodies. Perfect faces. Perfect relationships. Nothing is that real. We have to teach them that who they are is already amazing.” I am stunned.

*** At the 10AM Spanish mass on Christmas Day, Fr. Joe Spiel‐er, SJ, distributed pieces of straw that he asked the people to place on the crib of the infant Jesus. The straw repre‐sents any intention that one wishes to ask from the Baby Jesus. It could be health, stability of work, unity in the fam‐ily or anything that the person desires. Then the people were asked to process the pieces of straw and place them on the crib of Jesus. It was a moving experience. I wish that your New Year’s wishes will come true!

SAINT ELIZABETH ANN SETON (1774-1821) January 4 Though her liturgical designation is “Religious,” Elizabeth Seton, her feast-day prayer reminds us, was also wife, mother, educator, foundress. Born into a wealthy Episcopalian family, Elizabeth married William Seton, whose untimely death in Italy where the young family sought healing for William’s tuberculosis, left her, at twenty-nine, a widow with five children. Inspired by the faith and charity of the Italian family with whom they stayed, Elizabeth embraced Catholicism despite her family’s disowning her and ceasing financial support. This woman of many firsts (and several vocations!) opened the first free Catholic school, beginning the American Catholic educational system, and founded the first American religious community for women, the Sisters of Charity. The tuberculosis that claimed her husband took also her oldest and youngest daugh-ters and, finally, at just forty-seven, Elizabeth herself. Another first: in 1975 she was canonized the first na-tive-born American saint. Once asked to summarize her spirituality, she replied: “Faith lifts the staggering soul on one side, hope supports it on the other, expe-rience says it must be, and love says let it be!” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. LIGHT OF THE WORLD Epiphany can be understood as an extension of the Nativity of the Lord that we celebrate on Decem-ber 25. While at Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ com-ing as the long-awaited king and Messiah of the Jew-ish people, on Epiphany we celebrate the revelation that Jesus is the Savior and Light of all nations—Jews, Gentiles, and all people. The star shines so brightly that it attracts magi who come from far distant countries to worship Jesus. They are not Jews, yet they are drawn to the Light of the world. The letter to the Ephesians reveals that the Light of the world was for the Gentiles as well as the Jews—Christ gathers all people into the light of his love. The reading from Isaiah also describes a gather-ing of diverse peoples, but this time it is to the light that emanates from the people of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
