All of these brothers loved life, and theirlives were entirely devoted to the educa-tion of young people, following the example

of Jesus who said: “I have come to bring life, andto bring it in abundance.” They loved life; theproof of this is that they tried to avoid death. Butthe events turned for the worst, changing thehistory of Spain and that of their lives.

In them, Marist Brothers know that “the lovepoured into our hearts directs all our energies tothis one aim: TO FOLLOW CHRIST AS MARY DID”(Constitutions 3); they know that they are “wit-nesses to and servants of the Kingdom of God.”

All of these brothers devoted themselves bodyand soul to the education of young people andput their life in danger to defend the young peo-ple confided to their care. For example, thebrothers who accompanied the young people whowere preparing to become Marists at Vic(Barcelona) and who gave their life to save theeighty-five young people in formation… All fol-lowed the word of Jesus to the letter: “There isno greater love than to give your love for thosewhom you love” (Jn 15).

rained and accustomed to living in com-munity, the meaning of fraternity urgedthem to stay united, whether this be in

fleeing or in going together to their death.Community was their common house. The brothers presented themselves with humility, simplicity and modesty, fruit of their confidencein God and in Mary and they expressed thisthrough the Marist symbol of three violets… Thelast words of Brother Bernardo and one of thelast messages of Brother Laurentino expressedthis well: “Tell the brothers that I carry them allin my heart; that they should have confidenceonly in God and in the protection of our mother, the Holy Virgin, that they should not fear whatour enemies could do, because we are, they aswell as us, in the hands of Providence.”

Men and brothers of good heart, seeds of life, blessed, because they enjoy the Life that Jesusgenerously gives us in abundance.

They chose to build peace, to give love, to delivertheir life for the good of children and young people. And their life is fruitful and multiplying stilltoday.

Why arethese brothers

“Seeds of life”?

If the grain of wheat thatfalls to the ground does

non die, it remains alone;

but if it dies it bears much fruit.

(Jn 12, 24)

What is the meaning of their life

for us?

lácido Fàbrega Juliàwas born in Camallera(Girona), on the 18th

February 1889. On the 8th

September 1904, he enteredthe novitiate and took the name of BrotherBernardo. At the end of August 1925, he was sentto Vallejo de Orbó (Palencia) where he was thesuperior of the community of three brothers andDirector of the school in which five hundred chil-dren were studying, sons of coal miners.

On the 27thOctober 1931, Brother Bernardo arrivedin Barruelo, a village of Palencia with 8000 inhab-itants who worked in the mines. He was to be theDirector of the school. There, he devoted himselfentirely to education and catechesis, spreadingculture and faith among the children of the village.

It was there that during the morning of the 6th

October 1934 and at the age of forty-five, he wasmurdered by a revolutionary patrol… His lastwords were: “Forgiveness, O my God! Lord, I for-give him! Holy Virgin Mary, forgive him! Oh! MyMother!”

pariano Alonso Fuente (Brother Lauren-tino) was born in 1881 in Castrecías(Burgos). His life as a Marist Brother

took him to numerous places: Cartagena, Burgos,Barcelona. In 1928, he was appointed as Provincialof Spain. As Provincial, he had to suffer the diffi-cult times of the Spanish civil war and personallywitness the destruction of tens of Marist houses, the workshops of the publishing house belongingto the congregation, the imprisonment and murderof hundreds of brothers… In 1936, the valiant Brother Virgilio was on thepoint of replacing him as Provincial. TrifónLacunza Unzu was born in Ciriza (Navarra); he hadbeen the Director of the college in Burgos, respon-

sible for the novitiate at Gru-gliasco and Director of Murcia. He was a devoted and generousbrother, very knowledgeable, author of works who professeda great love for his brothers. In 1936, the civil war brokeout and violence extended overthe entire peninsula. BrothersLaurentino and Virgilio were

arrested in Barcelona togetherwith many other MaristBrothers. They were firstlydetained in a prison-boat inthe port, and then transferredto a kind of prison in San Elíasstreet. During the night from the 8thto the 9thOctober1936, forty-six brothers were murderedwithout priorjudgement, simply becausethey were religious.
