! Las variables de segmentacion siguen siendo validas
! Cambian los criterios de evaluacion

1. Determine the best way to segment the market
' Test hundreds of variables to see which ones really “drive” consumerin-market behavior such as overall consumption and brandpreferences:
' Demographics? Is age predictive of in-market behavior? Income?Kids? Etc. Etc.
' Attitudes toward the Category? Is there high “involvement” in thecategory? If so, does it produce different behavior?
' Brand Selection Criteria/”Needs”? Which “needs” really predictdifferent Brand preference?
' Behaviors? In what ways besides consumption are heavy usersdifferent than light? Do different people use different channels?Do package preferences predict brand preference?

1. Determine the best way to segment the market (cont’d)
' Media habits? Is TV usage predictive of different user/brandpreference groups? Radio? Print? Internet? Etc. Etc.
' Data Base Variables: Does census data about your neighborhoodpredict your usage or brand preferences? Which past “transaction”data is most predictive of your needs, brand preference, etc.
' Identify which of these specific variables are key and use thesevariables to define segments in the market.
' Combine the 2-3 key demos and the 2-3 key attitudes and the 2-3behaviors and the 2-3 key “needs” and 2-3 key media habits andkey database variables: put these 15-25 variables into a single,“multi-dimensional” segmentation scheme

Paso 2: Estrategia de M arketing
30/10/2002 Gabriela Abdala - October 2002 55

Today marketing plans are developed without any real knowledge ofthe relationship between marketing inputs and outputs.
Sales and/or profit objectives are set by top management withoutany real insight into whether they can be achieved. Strategies aredeveloped independent of the objectives while tactical plans ( e.g.,GRPs by month) are created without cognizance of the objectives orstrategy.
It’s no wonder that these plans, held together by scotch tape andprayers, fail to achieve their objectives.
