AYUNO ABSTINENCIA Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo son días de ayuno y abstinencia para los católicos. Los viernes durante la Cuaresma también son días de abstinencia. El ayuno es obligatorio desde los 18 años hasta los 59 años de edad, una persona puede comer una comida completa. Dos comidas más pequeñas también se pueden tomar, pero no equivalen a una comida com-pleta. Comer entre comidas no es permitido, pero líquidos como jugo y leche si están permitidos. Las normas relativas a la abstinencia de carne son vincu-lantes para todos desde 14 años de edad en adelante. Claro que si su salud no le permite ayunar, no lo haga. Si tiene una pregunta sobre el ayuno por favor consul-te con el sacerdote o el diacono.

REGULATIONS FOR FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. One full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted.

YOUTH ENCOUNTER

On Sunday, February 23, we will have a youth en-counter after the 11:45am Mass at the rectory basement. All adolescents between the ages of 13-17 are welcome.

ESL CLASSES There is space for 5 adult students to learn English on Thursdays from 5pm-7pm in the convent with Sister Rita. Registration forms can be filled out in Parish Office Monday-Friday. There is a $10 fee for the book that will be used. All are welcome. If interested please contact the parish office.

Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time In today’s Gospel, Jesus makes clear how we are to live: turn the other cheek, hand over your cloak as well as your tunic, asked to walk a mile, walk two. All of this builds up to the hardest of all: LOVE YOUR ENEMIES and PRAY FOR THOSE WHO PERSECUTE YOU. But don’t despair! We find hope in St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians: “… you are the temple of God, … the Spirit of God dwells in you..” We – you – can do anything if you are open to the power of God, the love of Jesus, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Séptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos dice claramente como debemos vivir: poner la otra mejilla, entregar la capa y también la túnica, pedir caminar una milla o dos. Todo esto nos lleva a lo más difícil de todos: AMA A TUS ENEMIGOS y ORA POR LOS QUE TE PERSIGUEN. ¡Pero no desesperes! Ya que encontramos esperanza en la Carta de San Pablo a los Corintios “… ustedes son el templo de Dios, … el Espíritu de Dios habita en ustedes.” Nosotros, tu, podemos hacer cualquier cosa si estamos abierto al poder de Dios, el amor de Jesús y la guía del Espíritu Santo.

153. Es tan importante la amistad que Jesús mismo se presenta como amigo: «Ya no los llamo siervos, los llamo amigos» (Jn 15,15). Por la gracia que Él nos regala, somos elevados de tal manera que somos realmente amigos suyos. Con el mismo amor que Él derrama en nosotros podemos amarlo, llevando su amor a los demás, con la esperanza de que también ellos encontrarán su puesto en la comunidad de amistad fundada por Jesucristo[80]. Y si bien Él ya está plenamente feliz resucitado, es posible ser generosos con Él, ayudándole a construir su Reino en este mundo, siendo sus instrumentos para llevar su mensaje y su luz y, sobre todo, su amor a los demás (cf. Jn 15,16). Los discípulos escucharon el llamado de Jesús a la amistad con Él. Fue una invitación que no los forzó, sino que se propuso delicadamente a su libertad: «Vengan y vean» les dijo, y «ellos fueron, vieron donde vivía y se quedaron con Él aquel día» (Jn 1,39). Después de ese encuentro, íntimo e inesperado, dejaron todo y se fueron con Él.

154. La amistad con Jesús es inquebrantable. Él nunca se va, aunque a veces parece que hace silencio. Cuando lo necesitamos se deja encontrar por nosotros (cf. Jr 29,14) y está a nuestro lado por donde vayamos (cf. Jos 1,9). Porque Él jamás rompe una alianza. A nosotros nos pide que no lo abandonemos: «Permanezcan unidos a mí» (Jn 15,4). Pero si nos alejamos, «Él permanece fiel, porque no puede negarse a sí mismo» (2 Tm 2,13).

153. Friendship is so important that Jesus calls himself a friend: “I do not call you servants any longer, but I call you friends” (Jn 15:15). By the gift of his grace, we are elevated in such a way that we truly become his friends. With the same love that Christ pours out on us, we can love him in turn and share his love with others, in the hope that they too will take their place in the community of friendship he established. And even as he enjoys the complete bliss of the life of the resurrection, we, for our part, can work generously to help him build his kingdom in this world, by bringing his message, his light, and above all his love, to others (cf. Jn 15:16). The disciples heard Jesus calling them to be his friends. It was an invitation that did not pressure them, but gently ap-pealed to their freedom. “Come and see”, Jesus told them; so “they came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day” (Jn 1:39). After that unexpected and moving encounter, they left everything and followed him.

154. Friendship with Jesus cannot be broken. He never leaves us, even though at times it appears that he keeps silent. When we need him, he makes himself known to us (cf. Jer 29:14); he remains at our side wherever we go (cf. Jos 1:9). He never breaks his covenant. He simply asks that we not abandon him: “Abide in me” (Jn 15:4). But even if we stray from him, “he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself” (2 Tim 2:13).
