You only get one chance to make a first impression. In today’s fast-moving world, you don’t get a second chance – it only takes one bad experience to negatively impact on your company image. In a split second, humans visually assess what is in front of us and form an instant opinion. It is absolutely vital that you invest in a professional designer to make that opinion a positive one.

If you are still wondering about the benefits of hiring a professional designer, here are five reasons as to why you need to ditch the free design programs and invest in your business reputation!

Save Time! Just because designers may be quirky and different using the other side of their brains, doesn’t mean they don’t know what they are doing! Professional designers are taught about the thoughtful use of design and color theory, an array of skills in Adobe

programs, and design principles. A good designer will create a unique design that is specifically-focused on your business.

A professional designer manages time effectively as well as providing great outcomes. They know their stuff and are able to think quickly by utilising their industry knowledge and experience – not to mention their amazing creativity!

An expert knows trends and can easily adapt. As design and styling trends change, a professional designer will know what’s in and what’s out for the season and for your industry. Professional designers will want the very best for you and your business – after all, their reputation is on the line too! They have an incentive to ensure that your all-important first impression is a positive one.

A professional designer will help you realise

your vision and create something that is truly yours, that reflects your business personality and goals, and that has been created by having a firm understanding of your industry.

A designer will help maintain a consistency. An experienced and professional graphic designer will know the ‘tricks of the trade’ on how to best-utilise designs to market your brand. Whether it is logos, letterheads, brochures, web pages, sign-writing, advertisements – the list goes on! From online to print, they will help apply your business brand consistently across all elements of your advertising and marketing to develop brand awareness.

So the next time you are looking for a design - think twice. Value yourself and your company enough to invest in hiring a professional design studio. Investing into your brand is investing into your business.

We Are Stingy GeniusWe are Stingy Genius. In the last 6 months we have launched marketing campaigns for over 20 clients without doing much marketing ourselves.

How did we get here? This is our story...

It all started when Martin decided to open a karaoke bar. With some assistance from his artist friends and after a few drinks he was able to set up everything he needed for his establishment. This included items such as website, graphics, prints and marketing. Four years later business was great but it was time to move on.

When he visited his firends that helped him succeed he noticed a big problem. For one reason or another they couldn’t get jobs. However one reason in particular was more prominent than the rest. After graduation they’ve

accumulated student extensive debt and with the recession hitting at the same time no one was hiring. On top of this they could not afford their expensive software or tools required to do the work. Instead of going into the creative fields they’ve studied for they ended up with other jobs which no one was happy with.

Martin decided to help his frients out. He knew local small businesses needed marketing. However they usually can’t afford very much.

So Martin and his friends collaborated and came up with a business plan. They got the equipment, software computerws and camera equipment. They built a studio and for 10 months we bled sweat and dreamt about design concepts. The company evolved into what it is today the company they wanted. Martin

got to help his artist firends and his artist firends got to work on the creative projects they’ve been looking for.

This is Stingy Genius Creative Designs. We are a group of graphic design professionals who create custom designs brilliantly and on-time.

We ended up becoming the one stop shop for today’s entrepreneurs. Stingy Genius is for everyone. From the fresh out of high-school dreamers to the seasonded veterans who need an update. Stingy Genius Creative Designs... creative marketing solutions from local artist to local business.

This is our story Learn how Stingy Genius started off as a small business

which bloomed into a successful Creative Design Firm.

BRANDING GOES WAY BEYOND JUST A LOGO OR GRAPHIC ELEMENT. WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR BRAND, YOU REALLY WANT TO THINK ABOUT YOUR ENTIRE CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE…EVERYTHING FROM YOUR LOGO, YOUR WEBSITE, YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA EXPERIENCES, THE WAY YOU ANSWER THE PHONE, TO THE WAY YOUR CUSTOMERS EXPERIENCE YOUR STAFF. WHEN YOU LOOK AT THIS BROAD DEFINITION OF BRANDING, IT CAN BE A BIT OVERWHELMING TO THINK ABOUT WHAT IS INVOLVED IN YOUR BRAND.

YOUR BRAND HELPS SET YOU APART FROM THE COMPETITION.In today’s global market, it is critical to stand apart from the crowd. You are no longer competing on a local stage, your organization now competes in the global economy. How do you stand out from the thousands or millions of similar organizations around the world?

YOUR BRAND PROVIDES MOTIVATION AND DIRECTION FOR YOUR STAFF.A clear brand strategy provides the clarity that your staff needs to be successful. It tells them how to act, how to win, and how to meet the organization’s goals.

A STRONG BRAND GENERATES REFERRALS.People love to tell others about the brands they like. People wear brands, eat brands, listen to brands, and they’re constantly telling others about the brands they love. On the flip side, you can’t tell someone about a brand you can’t remember. A strong brand is critical to generating referrals or viral traffic.

YOUR BRAND REPRESENTS YOU AND YOUR PROMISE TO YOUR CUSTOMER.It is important to remember that your brand represents you…you are the brand, your staff is the brand, your marketing materials are the brand. What do they say about you, and what do they say about what you’re going to deliver (promise) to the customer?

A STRONG BRAND PROVIDES YOUR BUSINESS VALUE.A strong brand will provide value to your organization well beyond your physical assets. Think about the brands that you purchase from (Coca-Cola, Wrangler, Apple, Ford, Chick-Fil-A, QuikTrip)… are these companies really worth their equipment, their products, their warehouses, or factories? No, these companies are worth much more than their physical assets…their brand has created a value that far exceeds their physical value.

WRAPPING IT UP.The best branding is built on a strong idea… an idea that you and your staff can hold on to, can commit to, and can deliver upon. Your brand needs to permeate your entire organization. When your organization is clear on the brand and can deliver on the promise of the brand, you will see tremendous fruit while building brand loyalty among your customer base.

WE ALL HAVE THEM – DESIGN PROJECTS WE’D LIKE TO TAKE BACK. SOME OF THEM YOU CAN ATTRIBUTE TO A BAD DESIGN BRIEF OR YOUTH; OTHERS YOU JUST WANT TO HIDE FOREVER. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT YOU CAN OFTEN AVOID DESIGN MISTAKES; THE BAD NEWS IS THAT EVERY DESIGNER WILL FALL IN AT LEAST ONE OF THESE TRAPS AT SOME POINT IN HIS OR HER CAREER.

1. Making poor typography choices. Typography can make or break an entire design project. Poor type choices include those that consist of too many typefaces, illegible typography and using type that does not match the mood and tone of the content.

2. Proofread, proofread, proofread. Typos are death to designers. Turning in a “final version” that includes typos is unprofessional and will not bring clients back. No one wants to end up on one of those blogs with silly misspellings or phrases. Proofreading mistakes can be costly as well. Most clients will not accept a print job with an error, a reprint doubles the cost (and eats away at your profit).

3. Don’t forget to package files. When it’s time to send the final product back out to a client, don’t just send an image file or raw document. That’s not enough. You must package everything you used for the project for a complete send-off. Forgetting to package properly can cause multiple

problems for anyone who opens the work – photos may be missing, fonts could get replaced, other elements could be lost or corrupt.

4. Building graphics and logos in raster format. Repeat after me: Raster is wrong. (Well, not always but you get the idea.) In most instances, graphics such as logos or backgrounds should be designed in vector format. Raster files, such as digital photos, are made from millions and millions of pixels. At certain sizes, these pixels become evident.

5. Fearing white spaces! Most designers know to use space, but still fall into the space trap because they are trying to get too much information into one space. The result is a cluttered mess that only hurts the design project.

6. Improperly kerning type (or not kerning). In typography, kerning (less commonly mortising) is the process of adjusting the spacing between characters in a proportional font, usually to achieve a visually pleasing result. There are certain letter combinations in every typeface that could use a little help. Forgetting to kern is the obvious difference between a complete project and an incomplete one. If you are using lettering as a dominant element in any way, a touch of manual adjustment is probably in order.

7. Forgetting to account for bleed for print. If you print it, you probably need to bleed it. Bleed – an outside-of-the-print-area margin – ensures proper cut for a finished printed project. If you forget to set a bleed from the start, it will take work on the back end to get an element print-ready. Further it can result in rework or part of an essential image area being cut out of a final job.

8. Don’t use so many colors! A weak or unplanned color palette can create problems of its own. Too many colors can appear cluttered, busy and informal while lack of color altogether can feel stark. Other color choices such as those with paired and oversaturated hues, can strain the eye and even appear to vibrate when viewed.

9. Making everything perfectly symmetrical can be boring. If every element in every design project is symmetrical, you and the people looking at your projects will lose interest.

10. Tricks are like typography: Use too many and you just end up with a mess. Add-on effects such as shadows and animations and embossing should be used alone. The same is true of trendy elements. These tricks can date a design in a hurry, especially if a trend is short-lived. Let your content dictate how the design comes together, not the go-to effect of the week.

Designer & ClientCommunicationThe success of a graphic design business will not only be down to how to get clients but also how you keep and maintain them. This is why client communication is extremely important.

Being a designer not just involves having design skills but it also involves how you deal with your clients. It is very important for you to know how to effectively communicate to make sure that you will have a project. There is always a need to communicate so you can come up with the right design for the project. You need to know what to ask your client and you should also know what needs to be done while you are communicating with them. Here are the tips that can help you to have effective communication with clients:

1. Organize client files. It is important that you have a file for clients when you communicate with them. This is a must especially if you have many clients. You need to keep track of what you have agreed and what are some important things that your client wants to be in the design. Keep a good system so that it would be easy for you to check messages from them and other valuable stuff. This way, you will not make a mistake about a client and you will be more professional in dealing with them.

2. Learn to listen. When speaking with the client, you need to do more listening than talking. Don’t worry for you will

be given time to talk. It is important to listen to what the client will say. If you fail to be attentive, your client might feel that you are not interested with the project. You might also commit many mistakes if you will not take note of the things that the client will tell you. So, develop good listening skills for it is part of being a designer.

3. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Before you go to a meeting, prepare the questions to ask. This way, you will know what you need to take note of while you are talking with the client. Also, ask questions if you want to clarify something. If you will not ask, you will face misunderstandings. Remember that your client’s time is precious for they have other job to do. So, do not waste their time and your time, too. Know everything that you need to know by asking.

4. Be patient when explaining. Your client may not have knowledge on designing. So, you have to be patient in explaining things to them. Clients would like to work with people who can explain things well without getting impatient. Also, you will have a good conversation if you will be friendly and professional in communicating with your client. Show your willingness to help them understand the design process and other aspects of the project.

5. Give suggestions. Like asking questions, you should not also hesitate to

give suggestions. Explain to them why you think your suggestion would be good for their project. See to it that your idea on the project can help the client and could also help you so that those viewing the output could appreciate the work done. Your client will surely be pleased that you are concerned with the project.

6. Help the client with their designed design. There are times that the client want something for the project but doesn’t know how to explain it due to minimal knowledge on designing. Aid them by showing examples of some project similar to theirs. You can also input some relevant stuff that can be of big help to the project.

7. Keep the customer informed. When you have closed the deal and you already got the project, the communication does not stop there. You should keep your clients informed. Update them on the progress of the project. Doing this will let the client know that you are really working on the project. They will also appreciate it that you are making an effort to update them on what you are already doing. But you do not have to update every day because you might piss off the client.
