Parent-TeacherCommunication

here is no “formula” for successful parent-teacher com-munication. The key is to be flexible and creative. If youmake it clear that you are respectful of the teacher’s time

and other demands, most teachers will respect your need for com-munication. It is important to emphasize that you want to supportthe teacher by following through at home, but you need informa-tion in order to do this. You also want to support the teacher bysharing strategies that have been successful and any otherinformation that would enhance your child’s perfor-mance at school.

The following tips can assist you in setting up acommunication plan with your child’s teacherand other therapists or service providers thatmay see your child at school:

� Set up a folder or notebook to keep trackof school information: teacher and thera-pists’ phone numbers, email addresses,school websites, school policies and cal-endar, etc.

� Have a meeting with the teacher(s) beforeschool starts to discuss expectations,yours, your child’s and the teacher’s. Dis-cuss the existing IEP or the plans for the next one. It is impor-tant to share your long-term goals for your child so theteacher understands the big picture.

� Keep a continuous dialogue with the teacher. Communica-tion is not just for problems. You want to hear about the posi-tive things and the teacher will appreciate your praise andgratitude when appropriate.

� Model the attitude you want the teacher to have toward yourchild. If you show the teacher that you celebrate all yourchild’s achievements, whether they are big or small, academicor social, the teacher can learn to celebrate with you and seeyour child through your eyes.

� Establish a system in which you can receive information andgive feedback on the work. A small journal that you both canwrite in helps to keep a history of progress and lets each otherknow what is going on in the classroom and at home.

promise that it holds….. Someoneonce said that good communica-tion is the only way to peace. Well,effective communication is cer-tainly essential in our daily lives to have good relationships and tryto accomplish our goals. As parents or guardians of a child withspecial needs, it is even more important. Limited resources foreducation these days is a fact of life, and we cannot afford to wastetime, energy, and money by spinning our wheels over misunder-standings. We must all learn how to be EFFECTIVE advocates forour children.

Positive communication skills between you and your child’sschool and therapists are necessary for smooth IEP development,for making adjustments in a child’s curriculum, and for progressreports between home and school throughout the school year. Ourfeature article has some good hints, and whether you are a parentor service provider, perhaps the school year will be smoother if weall practice “best practices” of effective communication.

This brings me to the first annual SPIN Symposium that will beheld October 25 in Santa Cruz. The theme of the Symposium willbe Improving Outcomes for Our Children: Parents and EducatorsWorking Together. There will be a full day of presentations on topicssuch as behavior plan best practices, assistive technology for learn-ing disabilities, the reauthorization of IDEA and the effects on spe-cial education, and other topics. única manera para la paz. Así pues, la comunicación efectiva esciertamente esencial en nuestra vida diaria para tener una buenarelación y tratar de completar nuestras metas. Como padres otutores de un niño con necesidades especiales, es aún másimportante. Recursos limitados para la educación de estos días esun factor de la vida, y nosotros no podemos desperdiciar eltiempo, energía, y dinero sobre malos entendimientos. Todosnosotros debemos de aprender como ser unos defensoresEFECTIVOS para nuestros niños.

Destrezas para la comunicación positiva entre usted y lasterapeutas de escuela de su niño son necesarias para un desarrollotranquilo del IEP, para hacer ajustes en el currículo de su niño, ypara los reportes del progreso entre el hogar y la escuela a travésdel año escolar. t hardly seems possible that a whole year has gone by since theHollister SPIN office opened on Monterey Street! The Sup-port Groups for English and Spanish speakers are humming

along, and the workshops lastSpring were well-attended.And thanks to Hollister Rec-reation for the fun “swimdays” we coordinated this lastsummer for our families ofchildren with special needsand their siblings, and thesibling “gym day”. � Learn the paper exchange. Does your child bring work home?Does it need to be returned? How much homework? Whenare the tests?

� Communicate with the teacher about concerns, issues andmedications that might affect your child at school. Help theteacher understand the implications of your child’s disability,whatever it is.

� Request an IEP review if a problem arises that may require achange in your child’s accommodations, services, or goals andobjectives.

� If you have a number of issues to discuss, arrange a briefphone conference or meeting rather than stopping the teacherin the hallway.

� Volunteer to help in the classroom and on field trips. If yourjob or other children make this difficult, there are often tasksthat a teacher can send home for you to do. Participate in gen-eral school activities—a great way to make friends with otherparents that become your informal network at school.

Volleyball Tournament

“Nets” Friends & FunThanks to Amanda and Tom Owens, the second annual

volleyball tournament held on June 28 at Seabright Beachin Santa Cruz brought lots of friends out to play in the

sun and sand for SPIN. We had a total of 8 four-personteams, and it was an exciting battle to first place.

Participants came from as far away as Arizona! It was afabulous day, and we thank all the players and prize

donors, especially Home Service Associates, Inc. of SanJose and Capitola, Diane Berry-Wahrer, and Steve

Timmons (former U.S. Volleyball Olympian and proplayer!) of Redsand, Inc. You’re all official SPINNERs!
