MERCY MOMENTS BY: DEACON TOM DRISCOLL
The final Parable of Mercy we consider is the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector in the Temple. (Lk. 18: 9-14.) The Pharisee, an unnamed man who was a good person of his day by observing the moral law of the Torah, proclaims a prayer of thankfulness for his goodness, while the Tax Collector, who was a bad person of his day who routinely violated the Torah by his position in which he extorted money from his own people on behalf of the oppressive Romans, utters a prayer of self-accusation. Jesus tells us, though, that it was not the Pharisee, the societal good guy of his day, but the Tax Collector, the despised guy of his day, who left the temple justified “for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Lk. 18:14.) In this comparison of good and bad people with a surprising twist, Jesus teaches us a very important lesson about the dangerous consequences of spiritual pride, an insidious disease of soul which can prevent reconciliation with God (justification) because the individual’s heart is so self-impressed it has no room for God’s mercy; it is not open to reconciliation. Both the Pharisee and the Tax Collector appreciate their reliance upon the mercy of God and go to the Temple, the sign and symbol of God, seeking reconciliation. Yet, the Tax Collector, the bad man, was honest and sincere: recognizing his badness, he turns to God candidly and humbly, begging only for God’s mercy because he recognizes he had no other means for reconciliation with God than God’s own mercy – at that moment of honest contrition he was both open to and utterly reliant on the mercy of God to effect the reconciliation he sought. The Pharisee, however, offered a prayer of self-satisfaction and deserved separation from bad people, as though conferring reconciliation on himself. His prayer was all about himself, his distinction from other folks, and his presumed relatedness to God. The Tax Collector, making no such presumption, is reconciled to God, while the Pharisee is not. We must pray in recognition of our imperfection and utter reliance upon God’s mercy for reconciliation with him and with each other. While we must try our best to live our faith courageously and compassionately, we must always reject the temptation to pride ourselves upon any entitlement to the mercy of God because that orientation prevents the reconciliation we seek.
Mercy Challenge for the week: Learn, pray, recite mentally the Jesus Prayer throughout your day – “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
