Una Meta– Narrativa de Consolación
Hace unos años, participé en un asamblea en donde analizamos la lucha
que muchos jóvenes tienen hoy con su fe. Uno de los participantes, un
joven Oblato canadiense francés nos ofreció esta perspectiva:
“Yo trabajo con estudiantes universitarios, como capellán. Estos
jóvenes sienten un entusiasmo por la vida y viven con una energía y
color que me dan envidia. Pero noto que, debajo de todo ese entusiasmo
y energía, carecen de esperanza, porque no tienen una “ultra-
narrativa” (una “visión de largo alcance”). No poseen una gran
historia, una gran visión, que les puedan dar perspectiva más amplia,
más allá de los altibajos de su vida cotidiana. Cuando su salud, sus
relaciones y sus vidas marchan viento en copa, se sienten felices y
rebosantes de esperanza. Pero lo contrario es también cierto. Cuando
las cosas no ruedan bien, todo su mundo se desploma. No tienen nada
que les proporcione una visión más allá del momento presente”.
Fundamentalmente, lo que ese religioso oblato canadiense describía se
podría resumir como: “la paz que puede darnos nuestro mundo”. Jesús, en
su discurso de despedida en la Última Cena, contrapone dos clases de paz:
la paz que él nos deja y la paz que el mundo nos puede dar. ¿Qué
diferencia hay entre las dos?
La paz que nos puede dar el mundo no es una paz mala o negativa. Es
auténtica y buena, pero es frágil e insuficiente.
Es frágil porque se nos puede arrebatar fácilmente. La paz, tal como la
experimentamos normalmente en nuestra vida, se basa en sentirnos sanos,
queridos y seguros. Pero todos esos elementos son frágiles. Pueden
cambiar radicalmente con una visita al médico, con un mareo inesperado,
con un repentino dolor de pecho, con la pérdida de un empleo, con la
ruptura de una relación, con el suicidio de un ser querido o con múltiples
formas de engaño que nos pueden sorprender en la vida. Intentamos
extremadamente tomar medidas para garantizar la salud, la seguridad y la
honradez de nuestras relaciones, pero vivimos con mucha ansiedad,
sabiendo que esos son siempre frágiles. Vivimos en una paz de ansiedad.
Así mismo, la paz que experimentamos en nuestra vida ordinaria nunca
nos llega clara, sin sombra. Como decía el famoso escritor espiritual,
Henri Nouwen, hay una cualidad de tristeza que impregna todos los
momentos de nuestra vida, de forma que, aun en nuestros momentos más
felices, sentimos algún vacío, hay algo que falta. En cada satisfacción
asoma una conciencia de limitación. En cada logro, en cada éxito, aparece
el miedo de los celos y la envidia. En cada amistad se ve una distancia. En
cada abrazo se insinúa la soledad. En esta vida no existe una alegría clara,
pura, bien definida. Cada porción de vida viene tocada por una porción de
muerte. El mundo puede darnos paz; lo único que nunca nos la da
perfectamente.
Lo que Jesús ofrece es una paz que no es frágil; es una paz resistente, que
ha superado ya el miedo y la ansiedad, que no depende de sentirse sano,
seguro y amado en este mundo. ¿En qué consiste, entonces, esta paz?
En la Última Cena, cuando estaba a punto de morir, Jesús nos ofreció este
don de su paz. Y ¿en qué consiste, pues? La paz que Jesús nos ofrece es la
seguridad absoluta de que estamos conectados con la fuente de vida de tal
forma que nada, absolutamente nada, puede jamás romperla – ni la mala
salud, ni el engaño o traición de alguien, ¡vaya! ni siquiera nuestro propio
pecado. Nos sentimos incondicionalmente amados y sostenidos por la
fuente misma de la vida, y nadie puede cambiar eso. Nadie puede cambiar
el amor incondicional de Dios hacia nosotros.
Ésa es la “meta-narrativa” (la “visión de largo alcance”) que necesitamos
para guardar la auténtica perspectiva durante los altibajos de nuestra vida.
Nosotros somos como actores de una obra teatral. El final de la historia o
del drama está ya escrito y es un final feliz. Sabemos que al fin
triunfaremos, como también sabemos que tendremos que pasar algunas
escenas pedregosas antes de ese final. Si guardamos eso claro en nuestra
mente, podemos aguantar con mayor paciencia las tragedias que nos
suceden y que aparentemente tienen que ver algo con la muerte. Es Dios
mismo, fuente de la vida misma, quien nos sostiene incondicionalmente.
Si eso es cierto -que lo es-, entonces gozamos de una seguridad de vida,
una integridad y felicidad que superan las pérdidas de juventud, de salud,
de reputación, de traición o engaño de los amigos, el suicidio de algún ser
querido, e incluso nuestras propias traiciones y pecados. Al fin, como
afirma Julián Norwich, todo acabará bien, todo estará bien y todos los
seres, de cualquier clase que sean, se encontrarán bien.
Y nosotros necesitamos esta seguridad. Vivimos en constante ansiedad,
porque nos damos cuenta de que nuestra salud, seguridad y relaciones son
frágiles; sentimos que nuestra paz puede desaparecer fácilmente. Vivimos
también con remordimiento y con pesar por nuestros propios pecados e
infidelidades. Y vivimos con bastante desasosiego e inquietud a causa de
relaciones rotas y de seres queridos destrozados por la amargura o el
suicidio.
Nuestra paz es efectivamente frágil y afectada por la inquietud.
Necesitamos apropiarnos y asimilar con profundidad el regalo de la
despedida de Jesús para nosotros:

A Meta-Narrative of Consolation
Several years ago, I was at a symposium at which we were discussing
the struggle that many young people have today with their faith. One
of the participants, a young French Canadian Oblate, offered this
perspective:
I work with university students as a chaplain. They have a zest for life
and an energy and color that I can only envy. But inside of all this zest
and energy, I notice that they lack hope because they don’t have a
meta-narrative. They don’t have a big story, a big vision that can give
them perspective beyond the ups and downs of their everyday lives.
When their health, relationships, and lives are going well, they feel
happy and full of hope; but the reverse is also true. When things aren’t
going well the bottom falls out of their world. They don’t have
anything to give them a vision beyond the present moment.
In essence, what he is describing might be called “the peace that this
world can give us.” In his farewell discourse, Jesus contrasts two kinds
of peace: one that he leaves us and one that the world can give us.
What is the difference?
The peace that the world can give to us is not a negative or a bad
peace. It is real and it is good, but it is fragile and inadequate.
It is fragile because it can easily be taken away from us. Peace, as we
experience it ordinarily in our lives, is generally predicated on feeling
healthy, loved, and secure. But all of these are fragile. They can
change radically with one visit to the doctor, with an unexpected dizzy
spell, with sudden chest pains, with the loss of a job, with the rupture
of a relationship, with the suicide of a loved one, or with multiple
kinds of betrayal that can blindside us. We try mightily to take
measures to guarantee health, security, and the trustworthiness of our
relationships, but we live with a lot of anxiety, knowing these are
always fragile. We live inside an anxious peace.
As well, the peace we experience in our ordinary lives never comes to
us without a shadow. As Henri Nouwen puts it, there is a quality of
sadness that pervades all the moments of our life so that even in our
most happy moments there is something missing. In every satisfaction
there is an awareness of limitation. In every success there is fear of
jealousy. In every friendship there is distance. In every embrace there
is loneliness. In this life there is not such a thing as a clear-cut, pure
joy. Every bit of life is touched by a bit of death. The world can give
us peace, except it never does this perfectly.
What Jesus offers is a peace that is not fragile, that is already beyond
fear and anxiety, that does not depend upon feeling healthy, secure,
and loved in this world. What is this peace?
At the last supper, and as he was dying, Jesus offered us his gift of
peace. And what is this? It is the absolute assurance the we are
connected to the source of life in such a way that nothing, absolutely
nothing, can ever sever—not bad health, not betrayal by someone,
indeed, not even our own sin. We are unconditionally loved and held
by the source of life itself and nothing can change that. Nothing can
change God’s unconditional love for us.
That’s the meta-narrative we need in order to keep perspective during
the ups and downs of our lives. We are like actors in a play.
The ending of the story has already been written and it is a
happy one. We know that we will triumph in the end, just as we
know that we will have some rocky scenes before that ending.
If we keep that in mind, we can more patiently bear the
seeming death-dealing tragedies that befall us. We are being
held unconditionally by God, the source of life itself.
If that is true, and it is, then we have an assurance of life,
wholeness, and happiness beyond the loss of youth, the loss of
health, the loss of reputation, the betrayal of friends, the suicide
of a loved one, and even beyond our own sin and betrayals. In
the end, as Julian of Norwich says, all will be well, and all will
be well, and every manner of being will be well.
And we need this assurance. We live with constant anxiety
because we sense that our health, security, and relationships are
fragile, that our peace can easily disappear. We live with
regrets about our own sins and betrayals. And we live with
more than a little uneasiness about broken relationships and
loved ones broken by bitterness or suicide.
Our peace is fragile and anxious.
We need to more deeply appropriate Jesus’ farewell gift to us:
I leave you a peace that no one can take from you: Know that

English Baptism Preparation Sessions, for both Parents and
Godparents are normally held on the Second Sunday of each
month. Please call the parish office in order to register for the
session. The session will include a discussion of the sacrament
of Baptism, the completion of the necessary forms, a review of
the guidelines for potential Godparents and the date for the
Baptism will be chosen. English Baptisms take place on the
fourth weekend of the month at one of the Masses, or on a
Saturday afternoon of the month.

If you or a loved one is going to the hospital for surgery or
treatment, we urge you to receive the Sacrament of Anointing
of the Sick before being hospitalized. The Sacrament can be
received after any Mass or by appointment. While the friars
respond to hospital emergency call requests, receiving the
Sacrament before going to the hospital is preferable in the event
that one of the friars is not immediately available in an
emergency. Your family and friends are welcome to join you
for this special celebration so they can pray for you too.

A Friendly Reminder for our Parish Community
Disability parking may be used only when the person to whom
the placard or plate was issued is in the vehicle. If that person is
not in the vehicle, the driver may not use the disability placard/
plate. If you do not have a placard or plate and need to drop
someone off, you may do so at the side walk of the church and
then go to the parking lot to find a parking space. It is unlawful
to park or leave standing any vehicle that does not carry a valid
disability placard or plate in a parking space for individuals
with disabilities. Vehicles are subject to be towed.
Please keep in mind that there are also three reserved spots
purchased for BSS and two parking spot for Clergy only.

Troop ended the meeting
with a Pizza Party.

Christmas Cheer, a local 501(c)3 non-profit organization of
Alamance County providing food, clothing, and gifts to needy
children and elderly of our community during the Holiday
Season, is in need of bilingual interpreters (Spanish/English), to
assist during the interviewing process for Spanish Days on:

from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Christmas Cheer provided for 1,739 children last year! (All
children are referred to Christmas Cheer.)
