We all know what Elijah means when he says: “Lord, I’ve had enough.” Elijah, broken down and dispirited on his mission and journey expresses his desolation; a human thing to do. Within his condition at his lowest point he simply gives up. How many times have we done the same? How many times, tired and overwhelmed by a particular life situation we also give up? When injustice or despair seem to creep our inner most being as we try to simply do God’s will; how many times we become frustrated when we fail seeing the light at the end of the tunnel? Indeed, we may know how Elijah feels. But we also see how he turns his desperation into a prayer telling God exactly how he feels. And what is God’s answer to him? God presents him with food and water not once but twice. God feeds and encourages Elijah to stand up and continue his journey. The Lord renews the prophet’s courage and faith as he marches to face the challenge of another day. Christian life is not necessarily full of flowers, music, and light. At instances we have all experience brokenness and we have been crushed by circumstances that come our way. To keep us going we have God’s reassurance in the Church, in His word, through His sacraments, that He is with us to help us carry our crosses rescuing us from every predicament that falls upon us. Jesus offers us his body and blood. He becomes the bread of life for the sustenance of all. He is the new manna, bread from heaven that gave nourishment to the Jews as they were in the desert. He is the Bread of life as he feeds us in our journey towards heaven. Jesus is the unique sacrifice and source of eternal life. Whether in the midst of trouble or blessings we hunger for Christ who feeds us with the finest wheat. But coming to Christ requires not only walking up to the altar and receiving communion weekly. It demands from us to bring Jesus to others. It requires from us a genuine effort to forgive others and to love our neighbor. We cannot give what we don’t have. If we don’t want to be forgiving, to overcome our faults, to understand the failure in others, to avoid passing judgment, and to open our hearts when someone asks us forgiveness, we are not sharing with others the Eucharistic mystery. In the Eucharistic we meet Jesus and we also meet each other. It is an opportunity for reconciliation, a moment for healing, and a call for forgiveness. Therefore, expressions like “those people” disappear as we become aware of differences without judging anybody and dispensers of grace. In unity we allow Jesus to become the heavenly bread, the nourishment for the Spirit, the healing for the wounded heart, and the strength for our earthly journey. In one of my journeys through the Holy Land I was able to visit a Bedouin family. Bedouins live a very simple nomadic existence in the dessert as they live in tents. On that day the youngest daughter baked for us some bread. After preparing the dough with flour, a little water, and some species she buried the dough in ashes over heated coals and covered it all with a metal bowl. After a couple of minutes she unburied the bread, dusted it diligently “squeaky clean” and out of the ashes we received the tastiest and softest bread we have ever tasted before. It tasted like “a piece of heaven”. And so, out of the ashes of the cross Jesus gives his heavenly bread. We approach God in prayer so that He can turn our personal ashes into bread, and that in loving others we can bring Christ’s love to everyone who is hungry for the Lord.

Todos sabemos lo que Elías quiere decir cuando dice: "Señor, ya he tenido suficiente". Elías, derrotado y desanimado por su misión y su viaje, expresa su desolación; algo humano. Dentro de su condición en su punto más bajo, simplemente se da por vencido. ¿Cuántas veces hemos hecho lo mismo? ¿Cuántas veces, cansados y abrumados por una situación de vida en particular, también nos damos por vencidos? Cuando la injusticia o la desesperación parecen adentrarse en lo más profundo de nuestro ser mientras tratamos simplemente de hacer la voluntad de Dios; ¿En cuantas ocasiones, frustrados, fallamos en ver la luz al final del túnel? De hecho, podemos saber cómo se siente Elías. Pero también vemos como él convierte su desesperación en una oración diciéndole a Dios exactamente cómo se siente. ¿Y cuál es la respuesta de Dios para él? Dios le presenta comida y agua no una sino dos veces. Dios alimenta y anima a Elías a levantarse y continuar su viaje. El Señor renueva el valor y la fe del profeta mientras marcha para enfrentar el desafío de otro día. La vida cristiana no necesariamente está llena de flores, música y luz. En instancias, todos experimentamos quebrantamiento y hemos sido aplastados por las circunstancias que se nos presentan. Para mantenernos perseverando, tenemos la seguridad de Dios en la

Iglesia, en Su Palabra, a través de sus sacramentos, que Él está con nosotros para ayudarnos a llevar nuestras cruces, rescatándonos de toda situación que nos sobreviene. Jesús nos ofrece su cuerpo y sangre. Se convierte en el pan de vida para el

sustento de todos. Él es el nuevo maná, el pan del cielo que dio alimento a los judíos estando en el desierto. Él es el Pan de vida al alimentarnos en nuestro viaje hacia el cielo. Jesús es el único sacrificio y la fuente de la vida eterna. Ya sea en medio de problemas o bendiciones, tenemos hambre de Cristo quien nos alimenta con el mejor trigo. Pero venir a Cristo requiere no solo caminar hasta el altar y recibir la comunión semanalmente. Exige de nosotros llevarle a Jesús a otros. Requiere de nosotros un esfuerzo genuino para perdonar a los demás y amar a nuestro prójimo. No podemos dar lo que no tenemos. Si no queremos perdonar, superar nuestras faltas, comprender el fracaso de los demás, evitar emitir juicios y abrir nuestros corazones cuando alguien nos pide

perdón, no estamos compartiendo con otros el misterio Eucarístico. En la Eucaristía nos encontramos con Jesús y también nos encontramos los unos a los otros. Es una oportunidad para la reconciliación, un momento para sanar y un llamado al

perdón. Por lo tanto, expresiones como "esas personas" desaparecen a medida que nos volvemos conscientes de las diferencias sin enjuiciar a nadie y dispensadores de la gracia. En la unidad permitimos que Jesús se convierta en el pan celestial, el alimento para el Espíritu, la sanación para el corazón herido y la fortaleza para nuestro viaje terrenal. En uno de mis viajes por Tierra Santa pude visitar a una familia beduina. Los beduinos viven una existencia nómada muy simple en el desierto, ya que viven en tiendas de campaña. Ese día, la hija menor nos preparó un poco de pan. Después de preparar la masa con harina, un poco de agua y algunas especies, enterró la masa en cenizas sobre carbones calentados y la cubrió con un cuenco de metal. Después de un par de minutos ella desenterró el pan, lo espolvoreó con diligencia y lo limpió con un chirrido y, de entre las cenizas, recibimos el pan más sabroso y blando que jamás hayamos probado. Simplemente supo a "un pedazo de cielo". Y así, de las cenizas de la cruz, Jesús da su pan celestial. Nos acercamos a Dios en oración para que Él convierta nuestras cenizas personales en pan y para que al amar a los demás podamos llevar el amor de Cristo a todos los que tienen hambre del Señor.

Excerpts from Vocations: Helping Children and Teens Hear God’s Call, by Joseph D. White (The Catechetical Review, July – September 2018) We often ask children various versions of the same question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” “What kind of job would you like to have?” A more relevant question is, “What is God’s plan for your life?” “What does he want you to be?” We search for happiness in all the wrong places: material possessions, status, power, and unhealthy relationships. In contrast, true and lasting happiness is found only in living the lives we were created to live. It’s time we start asking our young people, not only what they want to do, but what God has made them for. God doesn’t usually speak in an audible voice and tell us what to do. God is our Father. We are his children. Just like the parents who lead their children on a “treasure hunt,” God provides us with “clues” about his plan for our lives: The things we are drawn to; the gifts and talents God gives us; the opportunities we are given; significant people in our lives. One age when we children are particularly likely to think about our future selves is age 11. This is a time of rapid physical growth. Their bodies are changing, and they are becoming young women and men. This leads naturally to the question, “What kind of man (or woman) will I be?” Most children celebrate their eleventh birthday when they are in fifth grade. One strategy for highlighting vocations in a special way at this age would be to take additional time with the unit on “Sacraments at the Service of Holy Communion” and have some special activities during this unit: Have married couples come in and be interviewed by the children about their vocations. Have the children interview a priest. Discuss vocations in general, including non-sacramental vocations. In a culture of distractions, there are so many voices competing for the hearts and futures of our children. Let’s encourage them to reflect on God’s dream for their lives. Help them to know that we find true and lasting happiness only when we are on the path to becoming what God made us to be.

White (Revisión Catequética, Julio – Septiembre de 2018) A menudo preguntamos a los niños distintas versiones de la misma pregunta: "¿Qué quieres ser cuando crezcas?" "¿Qué tipo de trabajo quieres tener?" Una pregunta más relevante es, ¿Qué es el plan de Dios para tu vida?" "¿Qué quiere Él que seas?" Buscamos la felicidad en lugares equivocados: posesiones materiales, estatus, poder y relaciones no saludables. Por el contrario, la felicidad verdadera y duradera sólo se encuentra en la vida que fuimos creados para vivir. Es hora de que empecemos a pedir a nuestros jóvenes, no sólo lo que quieren hacer, sino para qué los ha creado Dios. Generalmente, Dios no nos habla en una voz audible ni nos dice qué hacer. Dios es nuestro Padre. Somos sus hijos. Al igual que los padres que llevan a sus hijos en una "búsqueda del tesoro", Dios nos da "pistas" sobre su plan para nuestras vidas: las cosas a que estamos atraídos; los dones y talentos que Dios nos da; las oportunidades que se nos da; personas significativas en nuestras vidas. Una edad cuando los niños están particularmente propensos a pensar sobre su futuro es a los 11 años. Este es un momento de rápido crecimiento físico. Sus cuerpos están cambiando, y se están convirtiendo en hombres y mujeres. Esto conduce naturalmente a la pregunta, "¿Qué clase de hombre (o mujer) seré?" Monthly Grief Support Groups for Veterans and their Families

The Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide (LOSS) program is now offering monthly grief support groups for veterans who have lost a battle buddy, family member, or friend to suicide and for family members of veterans. Support groups are held every third Sunday of the month from 2 to 4 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in Orland Park. LOSS is a unique grief support program for individuals and families suffering the loss of a loved one to suicide. LOSS offers a safe, non-judgmental environment where survivors of suicide can openly talk about feelings and experiences. We help you to find community, direction and resources for healing.
