El Ayuntamiento de Tremp desde hace años promueve la conser-vación de los espacios naturales del municipio y trabaja para

que la ciudadanía conozca y aprecie sus valores. Con esta voluntadse creó, ya hace algunas legislaturas, la concejalía de Recursos Na-turales, de la cual nació el proyecto La Vall dels Voltors, en la Te-rreta. Con el paso de los años, se han desarrollado muchos otrosproyectos y acciones concretas, con la convicción de que la conser-vación es cosa de todos y por eso tenemos que trabajar y lo conti-nuamos haciendo utilizando estrategias como la custodia delterritorio y de la mano de entidades que recogen la sensibilidad dela ciudadanía. En este sentido, vale la pena destacar que el Ayunta-miento de Tremp ha recibido el primer Premio del concurso para elincremento de la biodiversidad en el municipio, concedido por laFederación Española de Municipios y Provincias, el Ministerio deMedio Ambiente y la Fundación Biodiversidad.

Este Premio nos permite ejecutar, durante los dos próximosaños, una tarea importante de conservación y divulgación que con-tribuya también a reforzar el hecho de que el municipio de Trempse haya ido convirtiendo en referencia para aficionados y profesio-nales de la naturaleza, artistas, fotógrafos, científicos y observado-res de todas partes que conocen la riqueza de estas tierras y de lafauna que alojan.

Seguramente, los esfuerzos que dedica el Ayuntamiento deTremp a los recursos naturales y a su conservación han influido enla decisión de SEO/BirdLife de escoger nuestra ciudad por celebrarla XX edición del Congreso Nacional de Ornitología.

En este contexto, presentamos en Tremp la exposición Atrapandoel Movimiento de Juan Varela. Este artista, biólogo de profesión, estáavalado por un amplio abanico de colaboraciones y trabajos conmaestros como Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente, y entidades naturalis-tas destacadas como la Artist for Nature Foundation, así como porun gran número de exposiciones por todo el mundo. Es un lujopara Tremp disponer de este fragmento de su obra, de manera queinvito a todos los ciudadanos de Tremp, y especialmente a todasaquellas personas que disfrutan observando la naturaleza, a visi-tarla.

For years, the City Council of Tremp has been working to pro-mote conservation of natural areas of the city and to raise pu-

blic awareness of their values. With this in mind, was created theDepartment of Natural Resources, that gave birth to the projectLa Vall dels Voltors in Terreta. Over the years, we have developedmany other projects and punctual actions, with the convincementthat conservation is everyone's business and therefore we have towork, and we are doing so, using strategies such as land ste-wardship in collaboration with entities which represent the sensi-tivity of citizenship. In this sense, it is worth noting that the cityof Tremp has received the first prize for the enhancement of bio-diversity in the municipality, granted by the Spanish Federationof Municipalities and Provinces, the Ministry of Environmentand Biodiversity Foundation.

This award allows us to run during the next two years, an im-portant task for conservation and promotion that will also help toreinforce the fact that the town of Tremp has increasingly becomea reference for amateur and professional nature, artists, photo-graphers, scientists and observers from everywhere who knowthe wealth of these lands and the wildlife they host.

The efforts spent by the City Council Tremp to the conserva-tion of natural resources have probably influenced SEO/BirdLifeto choose our city to celebrate the twentieth edition of the Natio-nal Congress of Ornithology.

In this context, we present the exhibition "Catching the Move-ment" of Juan Varela. This artist, biologist by training, is backedby a wide range of collaborations working with masters such asFelix Rodriguez de la Fuente, and with outstanding organizationssuch as the Artist for Nature Foundation, and by a large numberof exhibitions throughout the world. Is a luxury for our city tohave this sample of his work, so I invite all citizens of Tremp, andespecially to all those who enjoy observing nature, to visit it.

AJuan Varela me unen tantos lazos de todo tipo que nadiedebe esperar que lo que yo vaya a poner a continuación

sea mínimamente objetivo. Estudiamos juntos –hace ya dema-siados años- la licenciatura de biología en la UniversidadComplutense de Madrid y allí compartimos amigos, bares,risas, salidas al campo a ver pájaros... Juntos nos metimos enel estudio de las aves marinas, a través de numerosas visitas aunas encantadoras islas Chafarinas que nos permitieron todauna serie de descubrimientos y de pequeñas publicacionessobre gaviota de Audouin, pardela cenicienta, águila pesca-dora... ¡incluso sobre foca monje! También codo con codo em-pezamos a colaborar en la tarea de convertir a SEO/BirdLifeen la importante entidad conservacionista que actualmente es.Juan fue, de hecho, su primer director entre 1986 y 1990. Yjuntos hemos hecho más cosas posteriormente, como esa guíade campo de las aves de España que, modestia aparte, sabe-mos que ha ayudado y está ayudando a un gran número depersonas a introducirse en la afición a la ornitología decampo. Todavía, después de tantos años, seguimos compar-tiendo amigos, bares, risas, salidas al campo y muchas cosasmás.

Lo que sin embargo no compartimos, por desgracia paramí, es el genio artístico con que él nació y que ha hecho quede todas sus múltiples facetas la más conocida, la que motivaesta exposición en el seno del XX Congreso Español de Orni-tología, sea su trabajo como artista de la naturaleza. Un tra-bajo que arranca siempre de la observación atenta y pacienteen el campo, hasta captar la singularidad de cada especie, su“personalidad” si podemos llamarla así, y que luego es capazde trascender al plano artístico gracias a una evidente maes-tría técnica y gracias, sobre todo, a un buen gusto innato a lahora de plantear la composición, el color, las formas y lasluces. Arte que, por otro lado, Juan siempre ha querido y sa-bido poner al servicio de la ciencia y de la conservación. Poreso, esta exposición constituye un verdadero lujo dentro denuestro Congreso y por eso, igualmente, debe contemplarsecomo un necesario y más que merecido homenaje a la trayec-toria artística y personal de Juan Varela.

Ishare so many things with Juan Varela that no one shouldexpect that I will be minimally objective. Together we stu-

died Biology, too many years ago, at the Universidad Com-plutense of Madrid, where we shared friends, bar counter,laughter, and outings for birdwatching. Together we wentinto the study of seabirds through numerous visits to thecharming Chafarinas islands that allowed us quite a few dis-coveries and publications on Audouin's gull, Cory's Shearwa-ter, Osprey and even on monk seal! Side by side we alsobegan to collaborate in the task of making of SEO/BirdLife theimportant conservation organization it is today. Juan was, infact, its first director from 1986 to 1990. And together we havedone more things later, as the field guide of birds of Spainthat, modesty aside, we know that has helped and is helpinga large number of people to take their first steps in the fieldornithology. Yet, after so many years, we still share friends,bars, laughter, field trips and much more.

What we do not share, however, and unfortunately for me,is the artistic talent that he was born with, and which hasmade that of all its many facets, the best known and the onethat motivates this exhibit within the XX Spanish Ornithologi-cal Congress, is his work as a wildlife artist. A work that al-ways starts from the careful and patient observation in thefield, until capturing the uniqueness of each species, its "per-sonality" if we can put it this way, that he manages to bringto the artistic level thanks to his technical expertise andthanks, above all, to an innate good taste for composition,color, shapes and lights. Art, on the other hand, that Juan hasalways got the will and knowledge to put to the service ofscience and conservation. This exhibition is a real luxury inour Congress and therefore it must also be seen as a necessaryand well deserved tribute to the artistic and personal trajec-tory of Juan Varela.

Estudió biólogía en la Universidad Complutense deMadrid, y como biólogo co-dirigió trabajos de

investigación en aves marinas, contribuyendo a laconservación de especies amenazadas. Fue contratado comoDirector de SEO/BirdLife en 1986 desarrollando dicha laborhasta 1992.

Como artista es autodidacta. Ha colaborado comoilustrador en más de 40 libros, enciclopedias, periódicos yrevistas y es autor de 18 libros, entre ellos Aves de España, unode los libros de naturaleza más vendidos en nuestro país. Sutrabajo como ilustrador y pintor ha contribuido de formanotable al desarrollo de la conciencia conservacionista enEspaña. Muchas de sus obras se han utilizado en proyectoseducativos y divulgativos o para la obtención de fondos parala conservación del medio natural.

Es el representante oficial en España de la Artists forNature Foundation, (Holanda, 1990), y ha participado envarios de sus proyectos internacionales en Alaska, España,Reino Unido, Ecuador y Perú, Portugal e Israel. Su obra hasido expuesta en museos y galerías de Europa y EEUU y hasido seleccionada por el jurado de la prestigiosa muestra Birdsin Art del Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum (Wausau,Wisconsin), y por el de la Society of Wildlife Artists para sumuestra anual en la Mall Gallery de Londres.

Atrapar el movimiento, la actitud, la luz, ese instanteen el que el animal se desenvuelve con total libertad yajeno a la presencia del observador, es lo que busco encada una de mis obras.

Born in Madrid, he studied biology at theUniversidad Complutens. As a biologist he co-

directed research on seabirds, contributing to theconservation of endangered species. He was appointedDirector of SEO / BirdLife in 1986, occupying this postuntil 1992.

As self-taught artist, he has illustrated more than 40books, encyclopedias and magazines and is the authorof 18 books, including Birds of Spain, one of the best-selling books of nature in this country. His work as anillustrator and painter, has contributed significantly tothe development of conservation awareness in Spain.Many of his paintings have been used in educationalprojects or campaings to raise funds for environmentalconservation.

Is the official representative in Spain of the Artists forNature Foundation (Holland, 1990), participating in several ofits international projects in Alaska, Spain, UK, Ecuador andPeru, Portugal and Israel. His work has been exhibited inmuseums and galleries of Europe and USA and has beenselected by the jury of the Birds in Art show of the LeighYawkey Woodson Art Museum (Wisconsin), and the Societyof Wildlife Artists for the annual exhibition at the MallGalleries in London.
