Born in 1567 to well-to-do parents in France, Francis was destined to be a lawyer taking his father's place as a senator. After receiving his doctorate, he told his parents he wanted to become a priest. His father strongly opposed him and only after patient persuasion did his father finally consent. St. Francis was known for his gentle character and won many souls while he preached, heard confessions and catechized children. His writings helped people understand that they are called to become saints. He helped St. Jane Frances de Chantal establish the Sisters of the Visitation who practice humility, piety and charity. He took seriously the words of Christ "Learn of Me for I am meek and humble of heart ". His pleasant and sunny disposition won him the title of "Gentleman Saint".

Weekly Message on the Readings for the 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

As we conclude the Theogonic celebrations, the Liturgy of Word sets the stage for our journey with Jesus. The liturgical readings begin with our mission as the “Chosen People” and conjoins our very beings with the Christ, the Bridegroom. As we begin our walk with Jesus to his destination and fulfillment, a gradual revelation of the Messiah and His mission is initiated. God’s salvific plan slowly comes together in order to fulfill His part of the Divine Covenant.

From the prophet, Isaiah, the mission of God’s People and the Messiah is expressed in the first reading. In just a few sentences, the prophet reveals God’s intention that His followers and Christ will be the instruments through which the Divine Presence is known to all. This revelation, due to its importance, will be universal in nature and not just for a few. It is the Divine Will that all nations will be affected through this covenantal relationship and His Glory or Light will restore order to the chaos that resulted from Adam and Eve’s failure.

Today’s second reading from Paul to the Corinthians is somewhat strange. This reading is comprised of just the salutation. Nevertheless, when examined closely with the intent of the first reading, its selection as the second reading becomes readily predictable. Why did Holy Mother the Church select just this small portion of the letter for the entire day’s reading? Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that the Church wishes to impress its people with the motivation Paul felt towards his new calling as the Apostle to the Gentiles. Here, Paul states that he and Sosthenes have been called by God to be holy and witness themselves for the Lord just as the Corinthians and all Christians have been likewise called. He first greets them with the grace and peace of God before he addresses the issues of the day. This mission acknowledged by Holy Mother the Church, was the fulfillment of spreading the “Glory” or “Manifestation” of God to the world throughout all ages fulfilling Christ’s final command to his disciples.

Finally, today’s Gospel by John portrays John the Baptist’s role in the fulfillment of the Cosmic salvific plan of God. The Baptizer knows that he must fade from the scene so that the Light or the Word can increase. His time of preparation has concluded and, now, he must designate the true Light of the world. Having witnessed the descent of the Spirit upon Jesus at His baptism, this great prophet

prepares and accepts his upcoming martyrdom by revealing Jesus’ role as the new sacrificial lamb who is also the Divine Word, Incarnate. Christ’s dual function as sacrificial lamb and Word incarnate is uncovered for contemplation and acceptance. It is now John’s responsibility to “pass the torch” and show his disciples the true Light. Thus, prepared by John, Jesus’ disciples (and we) begin the journey of faith to Calvary and beyond. As John fades from the scene, Jesus begins his journey with the New Israel to the Promise Land via the Cross.

Today’s liturgy is our calling to follow the Anointed One. Jesus is revealed as Lamb and God, human and Divine. He invites us to journey through the significant events of his life that meticulously and unconditionally complete the Divine Plan. As we witness his miracles, celebrations, sorrows and trials, our job as “Priest, Prophet and King” are also manifested. As Christ witnessed for His Father, so, too, we are obliged. Through the tools that Jesus left us, the sacraments, our mission is established, and we begin our walk to Calvary in order to rise and reign with Him. At every Mass, we partake in the sacrifice of Christ and behold the Lamb of God. Then, we are sent forth to transform our world and manifest the Will of our Father.
