When Wersquore Depressed or Feeling Blue This Prayer From Padre Pio Is A Way To Reach Out

The small framed unsigned print reads ldquoReach up as high as you can today and God will reach down the rest of the wayrdquo Itrsquos my go-to quote for those times when I feel an emotional darknessmdashdepressionmdashcoming on or seasonal affective disorder However yoursquove come to a depressive state and for whatever history brought you there the key in both of those dark times is to reach The state of darkness and depression is not a void It is a space filled with insights that we are momentarily blinded to When we try to go it alone we are often too wearied to keep from going under instead succumbing to the waves of hopelessness In a recent confession when I was in a season of depression the priest gave me a very specific penance I was to read about Jesus walking on stormy seas and Peterrsquos fear in Matthew 1430-31 Then reflect specifically on that moment when Peter is desperately reaching out to Our Lordmdashthat second just before Jesus takes his hand It was a dark and doubt-filled moment for Peter whose faith had faltered It was also an intuitive response to a person physically drowning mdash reaching out trying to grasp at anything to save his life Father gave me imagery by meditating on and fulfilling that penance a metaphor to psychologically and spiritually reach for the hand of Christ I was surprised by how quickly the instinct to survive spiritually soon matched the desire to live physically when exhausted and in deep waters Assured that the Lord had taken my hand so I will not drown I often read this prayer sometimes three times through

Stay with me Lord for it is necessary to have you present so that I do not forget you You know

how easily I abandon you Stay with me Lord because I am weak and I need your strength so that I may not fall so

often Stay with me Lord for you are my life and

without you I am without fervor Stay with me Lord for you are my light and

without you I am in darkness Stay with me Lord to show me your will

Stay with me Lord so that I hear your voice and follow you

BECOMING CATHOLIChellipIMMERSION IN THE CHRISTIAN WAY OF LIFE

Throughout the entire initiation process the parish is helping the catechumens and candidates come to a deepened awareness of Godrsquos loving presence that brings life This presence of God is clearly experienced in the midst of the community As one enters more fully into the life and community of the parish one begins to examine and (hopefully) embrace the moral values that inform a Catholic Christian way of life All of this ndash community moral values ndash becomes part of the process of spiritual formation Spirituality is seen as more holistic and not isolated to an interior disposition Rather it is about living life most fully within the community

The goal of the spiritual formation dimensions of the catechumenate is the fostering and development of relationships that help the catechumens respond to the call of conversion Only by a life of prayer can we nurture and strengthen the response of faith that is demanded Initiation into prayer happens best when people pray We can talk about prayer and prayer forms during the RCIA process but the catechumens will best understand and appreciate prayer through the experiences of prayer that the parish offers to them (The RCIA Transforming the Church)

At Sacred Heart parish in addition to learning traditional Catholic prayers we invite our catechumens and candidates to pray with us at Mass Stations of the Cross the Rosary the Divine Mercy chaplet novenas and our yearly retreat

JOB OPENING - SECRETARY SACRED HEART CHURCH

We currently have an opening for the position of Secretary and are accepting resumes This position is full time and requires scheduled office hours 730 AM - 330 PM Monday ndash Friday This position requires a high amount of interaction with people so the ideal candidate would be personable energetic and welcoming It also requires a working level of knowledge with Microsoft Word Excel and other office programs Must be able to take initiative communicate effectively and work with many interruptions Ability to speak Spanish is desirable but not required A full job description can be located on our website Wwwsacredheartwdmorgemployment Please submit resumes to Nancy Gion to our parish office no later than February 19 2018

ADORATION AT SACRED HEART

Sacred Heart Parish continues to have Adoration every First Tuesday of the month The Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will occur after 800 am services amp reposition will be at 700 pm Our next opportunity for Adoration will be Tuesday February 6th You are welcome to stop in anytime from 800 am to 700 pm Please use the North Church Doors - the other doors will be locked In the event of a funeral Adoration will be suspended for the duration of the funeral and will resume after the funeral for the remainder of the day For more information visit the Sacred Heart website under ldquoworshiprdquo
