E-Mail: layministry@theadom.org What is the School of Ministry? The School of Ministry forms lay men and women who desire to grow in their understanding of the Catholic faith and in their ability to serve the Church.

Over the course of two years, participants develop knowledge in spirituality, theology, and pastoral ministry. Upon completion of the certificate program, graduates find they are closer to Jesus and are better able to serve in their parish and community. What is the format of the program? There are two different formats. Choose the one that works best for you. Traditional classroom format is offered in Spanish or Creole. This course meets once a week for two years (summers off). Online program is offered in English or Spanish and incorporates 8 online courses with in-person meetings over a two year period of time. What do I receive upon completion of the program? Catholic Studies Certificate is available to Catholics interested in learning more about the faith who serve in ministry and/or aren’t certain about their call to ministry. All participants enjoy connecting with a community of adult believers from parishes throughout the Archdiocese. This leads to rich discussion, and a broader notion of Church. School of Ministry Requirements:

A. Complete Registration Materials: Registration form, Non-refundable Registration fee

($25.00 if received by July 31st and $50.00 if received August 1st and after), two Personal

Recommendations (one must be from your pastor and one from a lay person, member of

the clergy or religious order), and Payment Plan form.

B. Excellent attendance and participation in class or online.

C. One Weekend Overnight Retreat and one Enrichment Day

Tuition total of two years: $660 per person, $1220 per couple. Only 20 payments of $28.00 per person (plus a non-refundable $100.00 payment by September) or 20 payments of $51.00 per couple (plus a non-refundable $200.00 payment by September).

Candidates for the Catholic Studies Certificate will meet the requirements for the School

of Ministry and the following:

A. Candidate MUST BE recommended by their pastor.

B. Candidate must be a fully-initiated Catholic.

C. Candidate is willing to serve sponsoring parish and commit to on-going faith formation.

La Escuela de Ministerios forma hombres y mujeres laicos/as que desean crecer en su comprensión de la fe Católica y en su habilidad de servir a la Iglesia. Reflexión del Evangelio

Juan 6:60-69

Para nuestro Evangelio de hoy escuchamos la conclusio n del "sermo n del Pan de Vida" en el sexto capí tulo del Evangelio de Juan. En los versí culos precedentes, que hemos escuchado proclamar en nuestra liturgia en las u ltimas semanas, hemos escuchado a Jesu s explicar que e l es el Pan de Vida, dado para que aquellos que creen puedan tener vida eterna. Este sermo n sigue al milagro en el que Jesu s alimento a ma s de cinco mil personas con cinco panes de cebada y dos peces. Como Jesu s ha estado ensen ando estas cosas, el Evangelio de Juan describe a una multitud que murmura incapaz de aceptar las palabras de Jesu s. En el Evangelio de hoy, la multitud se ha reducido en nu mero, y Juan ya no los menciona, ni a los judí os tampoco. En cambio, Juan describe el cuestionamiento de aquellos considerados como los propios discí pulos de Jesu s. El Evangelio de hoy primero registra la respuesta de aquellos en la multitud que se describen como los discí pulos de Jesu s. Así como la multitud ma s grande habí a luchado con la ensen anza de Jesu s, estos discí pulos tampoco pueden aceptar las palabras de Jesu s. Se dice que Jesu s sabe acerca de sus murmuraciones. E l responde reconociendo su incredulidad y reiterando que so lo aquellos elegidos por el Padre seguira n a Jesu s hasta el final. El Evangelio de Juan informa que muchos de los que habí an sido discí pulos de Jesu s dejaron de seguirlo en este momento. La cantidad de personas que siguen a Jesu s disminuyo de una multitud de ma s de 5,000 a solo 12 personas. Y es a estos Doce es que Jesu s ahora dirige su atencio n. La respuesta de Simo n Pedro a la pregunta de Jesu s sobre si los que esta n ma s cerca de e l tambie n se ira n, nos recuerda los informes de la confesio n de fe de Pedro en los Evangelios Sino pticos. Pedro anuncia, en nombre de los Doce, que han llegado a creer todo lo que Jesu s ha ensen ado acerca de sí mismo: Jesu s es aquel de Dios en quien han encontrado el camino hacia la vida eterna. Esta conclusio n del sermo n del Pan de Vida se centra en la fe personal en la vida del discipulado cristiano. Cada persona debe hacer su propio juicio sobre quie n es Jesu s y, al hacerlo, determinar la forma de vida que seguira . La gracia de Dios nos invita a ser discí pulos de Jesu s, pero cada persona debe responder a la gracia de Dios y confesar como propia la creencia de que Jesu s es aquel de Dios. Esta fe nos compromete con el camino de la vida, que nos lleva a la vida eterna.

Gospel Reflection

John 6:60-69

For our Gospel today we hear the conclusion of the “Bread of Life discourse” in the sixth chapter of John’s Gospel. In the preceding verses, which we have heard proclaimed in our liturgy over the past few weeks, we have heard Jesus explain that he is the Bread of Life, given so that those who believe may have eternal life. This discourse follows the miracle in which Jesus fed more than five thousand people with five barley loaves and two fish. As Jesus has been teaching these things, John’s Gospel describes a murmuring crowd unable to accept Jesus’ words. In today’s Gospel, the crowd has dwindled in number, and John no longer references them, or the Jews. Instead John describes the questioning of those considered to be Jesus’ own disciples.

Today’s Gospel first records the response of those in the crowd who are described as Jesus’ disciples. Just as the larger crowd had struggled with Jesus’ teaching, these disciples also cannot accept Jesus’ words. Jesus is said to know about their murmuring. He responds by acknowledging their unbelief and by reiterating that only those chosen by the Father will follow Jesus to the end. John’s Gospel reports that many of those who had been Jesus’ disciples ceased to follow him at this point. The number of people following Jesus dwindled from a crowd of more than 5,000 to only 12 people. And it is to these Twelve that Jesus now turns his attention.

Simon Peter’s response to Jesus’ question as to whether those closest to him will also leave, reminds us of the reports of Peter’s confession of faith in the Synoptic Gospels. Peter announces, on behalf of all the Twelve, that they have come to believe all that Jesus has taught about himself: Jesus is the one from God in whom they have found the path to eternal life.

This conclusion of the Bread of Life discourse focuses on personal faith in the life of Christian discipleship. Each person must make his or her own judgment about who Jesus is and in doing so determine the way of life that he or she will follow. God’s grace invites us to be Jesus’ disciples, but each person must respond to the grace of God and confess as his or her own the belief that Jesus is the one from God. This faith then commits us to the path of life, leading us to eternal life.
