futuras generaciones.
Astate that is full of traditions, visionary and cheer-
ing, provided by nature of a great richness and
diversity, gives origin to this unique guide, to let
national and international tourism discover its submarine
beauties.
In order to make possible the elaboration of this guide,
it was necessary to have the support of the local Gov-
ernment,theSecretaryofTourism,theConventionand
VisitorsBureau,andMéxicoTourismBoard,agreatteam
of videographers and photographers commanded by Dr.
Alberto Friscione who sailed from the west border of
Tabasco all the way to the south region of Tamaulipas,
recognizing each one of the already known sites and ex-
ploring and exploring new reefs and coves. It has been a
marvelous experience having dived in places where no
human being had been before. Undoubtedly, having found
unspoiled reefs where the effects of development have
not changed their natural condition has been one of the
mostfulfillingexperiencesinmylife.
This document’s purpose is to give to know this great
legacy of nature which unquestionably is the most effec-
tive way to preserve it, recover it and keep it for our
future generations.

AGRADECIMIENTOS- ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
What I have searched in the ocean is
true knowledge of mankind and my
inner-self. I know now that those of us who
have been embraced by the sea will never again
be full-time earthlings, and that a single glimpse
at its calm surface fills us with understanding,
love and inner peace, which in turn, lead us to
something plainly called honesty.

estimado lector,

from the shore is a unique experience, and to-
know it deep down makes us privileged beings.
the submarine world is a weightless place where we can
move freely in three dimensions like the birds or the fish,
and it offers us unique and pretty sceneries, tranquility,
relaxation and fun. Interacting with its friendly creatures
makes it possible to live unforgettable adventures and to
recreate the imagination by catching fascinating moments
with a camera.
Schools with internationally certified instructors featur-
ing modern equipment and high quality services were cre-
ated in Veracruz due to the great interest developed in
recent years in men, women and children to enjoy the
submarine marvels, practicing amateur scuba diving with
knowledge, safety and comfort, placing Veracruz as a first
level destination for scuba lovers.
for the same reason, a great team of passionate profes-
sional divers, headed by my friend dr. Alberto friscione,
has contributed to the enjoyment of this activity by plac-

how could I describe in simple words the
great excitement that invades my whole
body and spreads through my senses,
fully raising them when I dive into the warm wa-
ters of the coast of Veracruz.
And the effort is not worthless, since the marine
depths of the coast of Veracruz are places where
nature explodes into a magic mixture of reality and
fantasy, where anything could happen, no matter
how incredible it would seem.
When you immerse into the gulf of México’s blue
waters, you are surrounded by the majesty of the
the coral gardens, blending with other marine
creatures, transporting you to a peaceful world of
infinite beauty. The simple fact of observing this
spectacle touches our hearts and gives joy to our
lives.
As we descend with the autonomous diving gear,
the photo cameras in hand, the ocean wraps us
with profound blue hues. When we reach the cor-
alline bottom, for moments the huge and narrow
gorges force us to pass through one by one, while
big banks of small colorful fish take us to another
dimension. the Veracruz Reef system before our
eyes is splendid.
After a long trip, the traveler’s reward is the joy
to explore one of the worlds that has caught man-
kind’s attention: the marine depths.
there are so many beautiful things to observe and
so many places to visit in Veracruz that we can’t
remain silent and we want to share this with all
our visitors, domestic and international. for no
reason you can miss the experience of entering

of Veracruz.
this guide was made possible thanks to the sup-
port of the government of the state, the México
tourism Board and the Visitors and conventions
Bureau. We invite you to enjoy all these marvels,
like so many other visitors have done before.
In order to accomplish this work, the abilities and
courage of young people like gabriel guerrero,
Judith Pérez, Rodrigo friscione, Aldo Osorio and
Alejandro echeverría combined with the experi-
ence of some older and skillful professionals like
Armando gasse, Angel friscione, Manolo Victo-

Rafa Nachón, guillermo Piñero and francisco

We all have something in common, regardless
of gender or age: An overwhelming love for the
ocean. this is why we are here as a team, with one
passion and one feeling. We want to give this land
our best to show that VeRAcRuz also beats from
the bottom of the ocean.

The aquarium in Veracruz is the pride of its people. it has a huge oceanic
fish tank where hundreds of fish can be admired, an auditorium to project
differnt documentaries explaining themes about marine life an a very inter
esting museum.
This fortress was the only bastion for the spaniards in México and it was a
protection against the french Army in the called “Pastry War”, because it
was used as a fort, as a deck and as a prison. Nowadays, it is visited by count
less tourists, locals and foreigners.
The port of Veracruz has been characterized for its merry people and
good gastronomy. This is widely demonstrated during the carnival that is
considered as one of the best in the Mexican republic.
There were times of heavy marine traffic and Veracruz was part of an important commercial route, nevertheless the rivality of spain, france and Holland, brought pirates who disputed the richness of spaniards. Nowadays, are displayed some jewels that a fisherman found in 1963 while he was catching octopus.

its origin dates back to the XiV century, with the arrival of four indigenous groups: Totonac, chichimec, Toltec and Teochichimec, who formed the populations of Xallitic, Techacapan, Tecuanapan and Tlalnecapan. Today, Xalapa is an important cultural city where you can visit the Antropology Museum, the interactive Museum and the Universities, and listen to the symphonic Orchestra of Xalapa.

This is a privileged place in the coast of Veracruz, that since midcentury XiX it became one of the tobacco reproductions centres with more reputation in the world. The british minister Wiston churchill used to get his cigars here. Going through the cropped fields one can notice the origin of the leaves, that once they are dry, they are the rough material for the wrap, and this is because of the weather of the region that enjoys a special humidity.
This place appears in thausands of presentations. close to san Andrés, there is salto de eyipantla, there is a 30meter drop off in the river comoapan. There is also the enchanted lagoon, which name is thanks to the characteristic that it has: its water level diminishes when it rains and increases during dryness.
catemaco is better known as the city of wizards, who are adept to the tradi
cional natural medicine. in the ecological park Nanciyaga, there are many “cha
manes”, who cure with rituals, magic, herbs, temazcal, mud and mineral water.
its lagoon is the largest mirror in the zone.
They are located at sierra de santa Martha and guarded by san Martin volcano, in the core area of the biosphere reserve of the Tuxtlas, these two municipalities feature facilities for ecotourism like: senderism, bird watching, handicrafts making, temazcal, herbs and huts to stay overnight, as well as turtle camps where up to 3000 baby turtles are released.
