Tank inventory information in liquid storage
terminal and refinery automation is increasinglycritical for operational and environmental reasons.The primary requirement is high reliability anduninterrupted availability of data. Enraf offers fastdata access for environmentally conscious operationof liquid bulk storage sites.
In the past it was quite normal to run all functionslike data acquisition, data processing, alarm-handling and communication to third party systemsvia the same Tank Inventory Management System onone PC. All these functions, together with thedemanding graphical display requirements, limitedthe speed and efficiency of information availability.
The unique Enraf Three layer concept
To create an open system and to improve the dataavailability and easy interfacing, the tasks have beenseparated into three layers including:
The primary layer - CIU PrimeThe extensive real-time data scanning andacquisition tasks now runs in the CIU Prime.
In this way time critical scanning can run smoothlywithout delay. Concurrent polling and parallelprocessing of the field data guarantees datathroughput independent of the PC activities.
The secondary layer - CIU PlusThe complex and specialized real-time inventorycalculations now run independently in the CIU Plus.This guarantees fast availability of inventoryinformation.
The top layer - Entis ProTodays Tank gauging systems are required to
provide a Windows NT based Graphic UserInterface (GUI). Entis Pro creates clear and detailedgraphical displays of tank inventory data.Kernel activities, like hard disk and network accessand the increased number of graphical tasks,run smoothly. For detailed information see ourEntis Pro brochure.

Full Year 2000 compliance
Of course the CIUs are fully Year 2000 compliant.The internal hardware clock, used for time stampingall field data in the database, supports the full dateand time format. Any PLC or DCS can synchronizedate and time via either one of the host ports.
Time synchronization
Automatic and transparent time synchronizationover the whole system (Entis Pro, CIU Plus &CIU Prime) is an important new feature.
Rugged and reliable
The use of dedicated hardware, without cooling fansand spinning hard disks, assures a reliable operation.Continuous recalculation of all inventory data andflow rates in synchronous data sets on a per tankbasis prevents potentially misleading and out ofphase data presentation.

CIU Prime
The CIU Prime is the interface between the fieldinstruments (tank gauging instruments) and thecontrol room. Up to 50 tanks can be connected toa single CIU Prime.
Main task
The new CIU Prime offers the ideal tank scanningand data acquisition unit for all tanks in bothstorage terminals and refineries.All measured field data from the connected gaugeswill be scanned continuously.
For this task, the CIU Prime can be equipped with amaximum of four Field ports. Each of these boardshas its own processor and interface to field wiring.Parallel operation of these processors allowsconcurrent scanning to achieve a very high updaterate of the field database.
All scanned data is stored in a local real-timedatabase for access by higher level computerizedsystems. Separate boards are available forinterfacing to various physical layers.

Boards are available for connecting directly to theEnraf tank gauge range via the Enraf Fieldbus:serial ASCII coded, Bi-Phase Mark modulated (BPM).
Interfacing for third party tank gauging systems willbecome available in the future.

The CIU Prime offers two completely independentHost Ports for connectivity to Programmable LogicControllers (PLCs), Distributed Control Systems (DCS)or Enrafs CIU Plus.The communication is standardized on MODBUSwith a fully memory mapped configuration.
PLC connectivity
The PLC interfacing capabilities makes the CIU Primeideal for very high reliability in alarm processing.
In older tank gauging systems, all alarm processingwas done at one of the higher system levels, with alower inherent reliability. It is now possible to linkhardware alarms directly to the unit scanning alltank data. Any PLC can retrieve all primary measureddata via MODBUS and compare them with own setpoints to generate alarms on pre-programmedconditions.

Connectivity
Connectivity is a prime requirement for any newtank gauging system. The use of the worldwideknown MODBUS standard for communicationguarantees compatibility with your system.
Dual host connections allow a simultaneousconnection for local or remote service via a modem.Support of programmable modem initializationstrings even allows for automatic dial-in and connectat start-up.

CIU Plus
The CIU Plus is a standalone inventory calculation unit, for use in combination with the CIU Prime.
Tank inventory of up to 50 tanks can be monitored by a single CIU Plus.
Main task
The main task includes inventory calculation of volumes (TOV, GOV, GSV, NSV), flow rate and mass (both totalmass and vapor mass if applicable) using the appropriate formulas according to the international standards ofAPI and ASTM.
Any Distributed Control System (DCS )or Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system caninterface to a CIU Plus and retrieve all inventory data of all 50 tanks. Host communication is fully standardizedon MODBUS with a memory mapped configuration per port.
Hot standby & Redundancy
Both CIU Prime and CIU Plus are completely prepared for hot standby & redundant operation. In a redundantconfiguration, secondary communication links or even hot standby CIUs optimize availability and routing oftank inventory data. Redundancy can be constructed at any or all of the CIU levels.

Interface (in)
The CIU Plus has standard two Field ports for
interfacing to one or more CIU Primes. The serial linkbetween the CIU Plus and the CIU Prime can consistof a simple null-modem connection, but can alsomake use of line-drivers, long haul or dial-in, or evenfiber optic modems.This flexibility makes it possible to install CIU Plusand CIU Prime at separate locations, which is idealfor connecting to off-site tanks or pump controlrooms.

The CIU Plus can be equipped with a maximum offour RS-232C / RS-485 output boards. Each of theseboards has its own processor and offers trulyindependent host communication. Parallel processingof these processors allows high Baud-rates of up to38k4 baud.

The new CIU Plus offers the ideal tank calculationunit both for terminals and refineries. Connected to
a CIU Prime, it offers the superior solution for allmodern tank inventory applications.
Connectivity
Enraf has given extra attention to provide a high
level of connectivity to the CIU Plus. The unit isequipped with up to four host connections allowingsimultaneous connection to PLC, DCS or SCADAsystems. Also, remote service communication via amodem allows configuration and diagnostic support.Programmable modem initialization strings allowautomatic dial-in and connect capability.
The use of the worldwide known MODBUS standardfor communication guarantees compatibility withyour system.

Safeguarding the host link
An external watchdog capability is available viarelays (per host port) that are activated when a host
link failure is detected by the CIU Plus.
Easy configuration with Ensite Pro
Configuration of the CIU Plus is simple andstraightforward with the Ensite Pro program.Ensite Pro is a Windows based service utility,
which can be used for local or remote configurationand diagnostics of CIUs and all connected gauges.
