Looking towards 2012
The year 2011 has beenhard, although we havemanaged to maintain
a strong system of researchin the face of the economicsetbacks. For 2012 we must ensure economic stability. Firstly,we are working to keep up public funding. Secondly, we willcontinue to promote the flexible governance model that isgiving such good results. Theapproval of the most recentbudget accompanying act, with two entire articles on research guaranteeing both theresearch centres and ICREA anautonomy which is essential, isa success.
In the longer term, we willwork to protect the systemfrom any possible interference, as well as facing theenormous challenge of theprivate sector in two ways:by attracting private funding, which has not kept up withthe increment in public money in recent years, and promoting the conversion of theknowledge created throughsignificant budgetary effort, into economic value and jobs.

The park consolidatesits internationalization
After five years of collecting demographic datawe are now able to do
some comparative statistics andsee how the population of residents at the PRBB has evolved. It is good to know, for example, that the percentage of foreignershas increased steadily, from 20%in 2007 to 27% in 2011, or from30% to 41% considering nonnatives within the scientific community. This rise is even moreremarkable if we look at the datafrom the CRG, where the foreignpopulation (56%) is now greater than the Spanish one (44%).Another fact to consider is theincrease in technical staff : in2007 they represented 18% ofthe population of the park, whilein 2011 this figure is 31%. Overthe same period the administra
tive and management staff hasdecreased slightly from 22% to18%.
The total community hasshown a slight annual increment of 2.7%, peaking at 1,345residents in 2011. This rise isattributable mainly to the CRG,which has grown by 21 members of staff, and the CREAL,which has increased by 11. Allother centres have maintainedor slightly expanded their population compared to the previousyear.
As far as nationality goes, Italians keep arriving at the parkand are currently by far the mostnumerous (82), followed by theGermans (47), French (36) andPortuguese (22). From outsideEurope there are 12 Americansand 10 Argentineans, Canada,Colombia and Russia are represented by six people each andthere are five Cubans ■

“Health inequality is the greatestcurrent epidemic”
Why is the life expectancy of achild born in a poor area ofGlasgow only 54 whilst in a we
althy neighbourhood a few miles away itis 82? Why are the unemployed workingclasses more likely to suffer poor mentalhealth or die young? How does job instability impact health? Questions like theseare those posed by the health inequalitiesresearch group (GREDSEMCONET) ofthe UPF. “Biological, genetic and lifestylefactors are related to the development ofdisease, but we are mostly interested inthe cause of causes, for example, why some social groups have more opportunitiesto have a healthy lifestyle. The social inequality in health, which the WHO definesas the differences in health which are unjust and avoidable, is the greatest epidemicexisting today”, explains Joan Benach, headof the group and reader at the UPF.
Interdisciplinary research
The GREDSEMCONET was created twoyears ago at the CEXSUPF, although it hasjust moved to the Department of Politicaland Social Sciences. It is made up of a dozenresearchers including doctors, biologists, statisticians, sociologists, political scientists, pharmacists and anthropologists. The interdisciplinary training of the team is essentialto this research, which requires a compre
hensive understanding of public health.“Collective health depends not only on biology or behavioural changes but also on political, economic and social factors: access tohousing, social services and environment, aswell as social class, gender and the migrantstatus of individuals”, explains Benach. “Onlyby integrating all of these complex, causaland interlinked factors, known as “socialdeterminants” and understanding their interaction with individuals and communities, can we understand health and inequality ina population”, states the group leader. Oneof the lines of research of the group highlighting its focus on this approach are thegeographical studies such as the new atlasof mortality for Spanish municipalities, soonto be published thanks to a grant from theBBVA Foundation, and a pioneering studyon the geographical distribution in Spain ofrisk of death due to Alzheimer’s and otherdementias, in collaboration with the PasqualMaragall Foundation.
Global analysis of occupationaland working conditions
The group focuses on understanding theimpact of working conditions on healthand the inequalities found throughout theworld. For this reason, in 2006 some of themembers created EMCONET, a global research network within the framework ofthe WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health. They are the only groupfrom Spain to be part of this commission, and recently published the most importantreference work in the field (“Employment, work and inequalities in health: a globalvision”, soon to be released in English).
The study involved the participation ofdozens of organisations and researchersfrom around the world. “It examines howvarious occupational and working conditions affect, in very different ways, healthinequalities between people dependingon their social class, gender, age, ethnicity, legal status and region. Besides theirimportance for public health, these inequalities are one of the best indicatorsof social justice available”, explains thehead of the group. Currently the GREDSEMCONET is carrying out further workon the evolution and impact on occupational health of conditions such as unemployment, unstable and informal employment and child labour ■

Using human cancer cells in mice, thestudy demonstrated that a decrease inCPEB4 levels in cancer cells reduces the sizeof tumours by up to 80%. According to theauthors, inhibition of this protein could provide a highly specific antitumour treatmentwith few adverse effects, not only for the tumours examined in the study, i.e., from thepancreas and brain, but also for many othertypes of cancer. The biological clockcontrols skin stem cell activation
Astudy published in Nature reveals the role of the daily biologicalclock (circadian rhythms) in the
regenerative capacity of skin stem cells.Disruption of this rhythm results in premature tissue ageing and a greater predisposition to the development of skin
thought up to now. This is the main resultof a study coordinated by David Comas,Francesc Calafell and Jaume Bertranpetit, from the Institute of EvolutionaryBiology (UPFCSIC) and published in Molecular Biology and Evolution. The study, inwhich geneticists from the USA, the Netherlands, India, Russia and China participated, also reveals that our ancestors spread intoEurasia along a route located between Iranand India, and not through the Middle Eastas scholars had thought.
This study is part of the GenographicProject, funded by the National Geographicand IBM and the most extensive project todate to use genetic data from human populations. The study utilised a new analyticalmethod that infers the recombinations ofthe past from human DNA. It confirmedthat African populations are the most diverse on Earth and enabled calculation of the
tumours. Researchers at the CRG collaborated in this study with others from theIRB in Barcelona, Ohio State University inthe USA and the University of Fribourg inSwitzerland.
The scientists have found that an internal biological clock regulates the behaviour of stem cells in such a way thatthe skin stem cells divide and regeneratethe tissue in the evening or at night, whenthey are protected from harmful radiation. "Therefore, the biological clock enables constant replacement of the cells ofthe tissue with minimal risk of accumulating DNA mutations", says Salvador AznarBenitah, coordinator of the study andhead of the epithelial homeostasisand cancer research group at the CRG.
The genes Bmal1 and Period1/2 areresponsible for controlling this rhythmand regulating cell regenerative activityor rest. Through the genetic manipulationof both genes, the researchers showedthat disruption of the biological clock inmouse skin stem cells prevented the cellsfrom knowing when to exercise whichfunction, and that this caused longtermproblems in cellular ageing and tissue regeneration ■

“The PRBB generates the desireto excel”
What are your memories from the earlyyears of the old Institut Municipal deSalut Pública?
It was an exciting time. It was necessaryto transform the health system inherited from the dictatorship and in many
aspects it had to be completely reorganised. We built an information base, because without information it is impossible to makethe intelligent and fair public health policies which are needed.
The soya case was your first success. It was a scientific and health triumph because we discovered what was causing theasthma epidemic: the unloading of soya inthe port of Barcelona. They put filters in asilo and the problem was solved. In a shortperiod of time we published four articles inthe Lancet and the New England Journal ofMedicine.
How has the view of environmental riskschanged? At that time, the majority of specialists assumed that atmospheric contaminationwas not relevant to health. With the registercreated in 1991 we concluded that the airquality standards of the WHO didn’t adequately protect public health. Now everyone recognises that it is an important public health issue.
Do you think that the policy responsesare adequate?Normally any policy responses are insufficient and come too late. The environmen
tal risk regulation mechanisms require a lotof accumulated scientific evidence. In thisway, the measures are implemented late, when the consequences are often devastating. It is necessary to go forward thinkingabout the principle of protection.
What does working in an environmentlike the PRBB offer you?Working with the best helps you improve, not only because you learn and get ideas, but also because it makes you competitive. At the PRBB the level is so good that it generates the need to excel. The other thing in itsfavour is the interdisciplinarity. It is easy tomove through the corridors and find someof the best specialists in the world in a specific subject!
Can you combine research with themanagement of the CREAL?I think that in order to direct research it is necessary to keep researching, even though it’sclear that you can’t spend the same kind oftime on it and sometimes that is frustrating.
What are the next challenges in yourresearch?I have started a European project,MeDALL, coordinated jointly with INSERM,on the mechanisms of allergic diseases. It ranges from epigenetics to systemsbiology. This is one of the major scientificchallenges that I have faced and I’m veryexcited.
What advice would you give to aresearcher just starting out?More than advice, what young peopleneed is excellent education and the means necessary to develop their scientificcareers. At the CREAL we are developinga "mentoring" programme for young researchers ■

En poc temps vampublicar quatre articles a The Lancet i al NewEngland Journal of Medicine.

Protecting biomedical innovationsthrough patents
Apatent is an exclusive right grantedby a sovereign state to an inventorfor a fixed period of time in exchan
ge for public disclosure of the technical details of their invention. This grants the rightto prevent others from using or selling thepatented invention for 20 years from thefiling date. A patent has three main requirements: the invention needs to be new, involve an inventive step and describe atechnical application. Discoveries are notpatentable. The invention needs to be a“handmade” industrial product or process.Immediately after filing, the content may bepublished in a scientific journal, but neverbefore.
A patent remains secret for 18 monthsand is then made fully public through databases like Espacenet. The first 30 monthscan cost from 1015,000 Euros and the subsequent phases around 2530,000 Euros, plus annual fees to various offices to maintain the protection. In academia, we refermostly to patents of applications. A patentmay be granted at the earliest after three years but it may take six years to get the finalapproval.
In research, patent databases offer usefulscientific information. But the main reasonto patent is to provide a basis from which aprivate company can develop a drug, whichmay need an investment of up to 800 million Euros and 1215 years. They want toensure the drug can be sold exclusively forat least five years. Time will tell if the current patent system is capable of solving themost urgent health issues, but if a scientistinvents a new drug today, patenting mightbe the only solution to see it in the clinicone day ■
and this has allowed us to make predictions on how genetic variation in its genome can affect its growth rate”, explainsBen Lehner, coordinator of the study andICREA researcher.
The scientists used several methodologies to predict the phenotype (the observedcharacteristics, in this case the growth rate)of 19 yeast strains. They then experimentedon each strain under 20 different conditions, and measured the success of the predictions. The results, published in Nature
Genetics, show that it is possible to correctlypredict yeast phenotypes.
According to the authors, with better andfaster sequencing and experimental techniques, predictions about more complex organisms should also be possible. “The most important thing is to have very good knowledgeof the genome and be able to do individualexperiments. We can’t predict well if we onlyhave indepth knowledge of a very small percentage of, for example, the human genome”,says coauthor Rob Jelier■

(IMIM/UPF), we can see a simulation of theunion of a drug with its target. The small hexagonal molecule represents the benzamidine drug, an inhibitor of tripsine, which isrepresented by the 3D grey molecule.
Tripsine is an enzyme which cuts proteins. Its binding to benzamidine makes itimpossible for it to connect to other proteins that it should cut. This dynamic simulation of the inhibition shows how benzamidine first interacts with several regionsof tripsine which help the drug to find itsfinal binding site. Understanding the paththat benzamidine follows in order to bindits target gives new clues to designing moreefficient drugs ■

Tambéva presentar el projecte ITFoM (IT Futureof Medicine), finançat per la Unió Europea amb 100 milions d’euros l’any durantalmenys 10 anys.
Exciting times for computationalbiology
This is the century of the humangenome. With this statement, theCRG director Luis Serrano inau
gurated the X CRG Annual Symposiumon “Computational biology of molecularsequences” that took place on November1011 in the PRBB Conference Hall.
With nearly 400 people registered frommore than 14 different countries, and 20worldrenowned speakers, the success was
guaranteed. “We managed to gather the topresearchers in the field, and it was an amazing opportunity to be able to listen to them”,said Toni Gabaldón, one of the organisers.
The conference covered protein andRNA analysis, as well as genome evolution, regulation, and annotation. At theDNA level, Tim Hubbard (Sanger Institute) explained that the cost of sequencing ahuman genome is, nowadays, about 5,800Euros, and every two to four years the costdrops by a factor of 10. With these everlowering costs, he said, future policies ongenomic medicine need to be considered. He presented the ITFoM (IT Futureof Medicine) project, funded by the European Union, which is expected to run forat least 10 years and will receive fundingof up to 100 million Euros per year. It aimsto integrate all available biological data toconstruct computational models of thebiological processes that occur in everyindividual human.
At the end of the symposium it was clear that computational biology has veryexciting times ahead ■
