SCHOTTEL NAVIGATOR – THECOMPLETE PROPULSION UNIT
For more than 50 years, the SCHOTTEL Navigator (NAV) hasbeen a byword for a reliable and compact propulsion unit suit-able for use on an extremely diverse range of vessels. In princi-ple the NAV, an adaptation of the SCHOTTEL Rudderpropeller(SRP), is a largescale mobile outboard plant, providing the vessel with 360 degrees steerable manoeuvrability.
COMPACT DESIGN
All main components of the SCHOTTEL Navigator aremounted on the base frame, which also accommodates thedaily fuel tank. A canopy protects the complete unit. A dieselengine is used as the prime mover. The electrical and electronicmonitoring elements are installed in an integrated switch cabinet. The clutch between the prime mover and the Rudder-propeller transmits the power through a flexible coupling anda universal shaft.
PROPULSION: RUDDERPROPELLER (SRP)
The SCHOTTEL Rudderpropeller is mounted at the rear end ofthe base frame and can be hydraulically raised or lowered invertical direction by means of a depth adjustment facility. Thisserves to ensure maximum propeller thrust with all vesseldraughts by maintaining the correct propeller immersion. Formaintenance purposes, the Rudderpropeller can be pivoted to the rear using hydraulic or mechanical lifting devices. Thepropeller is equipped with an anti-cavitation plate to protect itfrom damage, or alternatively with a nozzle, if higher bollardpull is required.
SIMPLE INSTALLATION
Installation is fast and simple, since the Navigator merely hasto be bolted onto a foundation prepared by the shipyard. Thusevery kind of floating object can easily become motorized. TheNAV is characterized by its wide variety of applications. As anextra service SCHOTTEL offers installation drawings accordingto the customer’s requirements. Our sales and engineeringteams will be happy to provide assistance and advice.

APPLICATION ORIENTED PRODUCT VARIANTS
NAV OFFSHORE
For demanding offshore conditions the NAV Offshore is characterized by an enclosed version of the canopy. The frame, canopy and doors are galvanized to prevent corrosion. The upper part of the Rudderpropeller can also be protectedby an additional cover. The interior is cooled by an extra venti-lation system.
NAV RESILIENTLY MOUNTED
For special vessel applications reduction of the structure-borne noise may be necessary. For such cases SCHOTTEL offers resilient mounting of the NAV and the thrust bearing.
NAV Sound-insulated incl. SRP hood
All NAV variants can also be supplied with a ducted propeller.Rudderpropellers without nozzles are fitted with an anti- cavitation plate over the propeller to prevent air intake.
NAV ONATRA
The simplified version of the SCHOTTEL Navigator, Onatra (seefig. Barge installation), comprises the steering and propulsionsystem without motorization: a Rudderpropeller fixed to a vertical frame welded to a base frame, with the hydraulic unit, battery box and switch cabinet. The clutch, hydraulic pump, cardan shaft and control panels are supplied separately. The engine bed and canopy are supplied by the shipyard.
NAV BASIC
The NAV Basic comprises the diesel engine, the exhaust gassystem, the engine piping and cabling, and the daily fuel tankembedded in the base frame construction. Furthermore, theNAV Basic is protected by a steel sheet canopy painted to thecustomer’s specifications. The shipyard only has to provide theconnections for fuel to the main tank, for electric connection tothe bridge and for cooling water, if required.
NAV SOUND-INSULATED
The sound-insulated version consists of an enclosed, insulatedcanopy, thereby reducing the level of air-borne noise to a mereof about 85 dB(A) at a distance of one metre.

STEERING SYSTEM AND MOTORIZATION
Propulsion systems are only as good as their steering. Opti-mally adapted data exchange between the different compo-nents is therefore top priority. A further priority is a userinterface that is as intuitive as possible, enabling safe manoeu-vring. Here too, SCHOTTEL steering systems set the course, both literally and figuratively.
SST 600 WITH COPILOT 2003
This is a full follow-up way-dependent electro-hydraulic redundant steering system, including a time-dependent emergency steering system. This steering system operates
proportionally. This means that small steering angles are electronically transformed into smooth steering movementsand large steering angles are transformed into fast steeringmovements including an acceleration and deceleration ramp.
MOTORIZATION
The SCHOTTEL Navigator is supplied with a diesel engine. Theengine speed can be regulated by SCHOTTEL speedronic, anelectro-mechanical system. Otherwise regulation is possibleusing a 4-20 mA or 0-5/10 V signal.
