• A large number of rail incidents occur at level crossings.
• Level Crossing users can get complacent about level crossing warnings.
• Users ‘run the barriers’ without knowing how far away the train is.
• Some crossings have no barriers and/or warnings
• Current systems are non specific concerning train proximity or speed.
Problem Addressed
• A system that determines how far away the train is from the crossing.
• An indication of direction, proximity, speed or time to arrival of train to be provided to users
• A system that does not require connection and/or changes to the signalling system.
• A cost reduction on previous system to allow even lightly used crossings to have a warning system.
What is needed
• Better information to reduce complacency about barrier down time and impending danger.
• Does not require modifications to train or signalling infrastructure
• Is self contained, can be retro-fitted to all crossing types.
• Sensors are robust and suitable for trackside environment
• Allows car drivers to switch off engines, hence also reducing noise and pollution.
• May allow trains to increase speed on crossings

Controller
TRAIN APPROACHING
450M - 120MPH>- - >>- - >>- - >
Sensor (up to 2km)
• Intelligent Cable– Sensors in the cable detect the train as it passes, then send this
information to the Controller.• Controller
– Controller receives detection information from the sensors and calculates the position, speed and arrival time of Train.
– The train information is displayed in various ways and audible warning can be generated.
• Power Supply – Due to use of low power components the power requirements can be
satisfied by Battery, Solar Power or existing trackside power.
System Components
XING is under development with development of:
• Sensors to provide the correct sensitivity for the system.• Communication between controller and Sensor.• Amount of data that can be collected and provided to the Controller.• Sensor information under different conditions infrastructure and
environmental.• Algorithms to calculate position of Train.• Options for Visual and Audio Warning • Installing sensors in a cable.
