THELEVANTER
No se ve pero se siente. Aunque forma y modela nuestro paisaje.
You can feel it but you can’t see it. Yet it creates and transforms our surroundings.
Inextricably linked with Campo de Gibraltar, the Levanter appears to us as capricious, ever changing clouds, adorning the summit of the Rock.
When the Levanter appears, it is a real spectacle to see the clouds coming in from the warm Mediterranean and posing on the rock, providing an almost supernatu-ral display, looking like part of a science fiction film.
This photograph was taken from the La Marina Restaurant in La Línea de la Concepción, on a sunny Sunday morning in December. From Sotogrande, with Gi-braltar a little further away, the sight is just as breathtaking.n

¡GRACIAS POR EL GOLF! THANKS FOR THE GOLF!
Sotogrande Magazine would like to pay a special
tribute to Jaime Ortiz Patiño who recently passed
away. What better way to do this than through the
words of his friend, Cristina Marsans who spoke
about him on the 24th of August, 2006 on the occa-
sion of another tribute to him by the golfing world in
recognition of the work he did towards the develop-
ment of the sport in Spain:
I have been to many of these tributes throughout my life….and what has always surprised me is that there seems to be an offi-cial list of virtues and qualities that have to be used to describe
the person being honoured, whether or not those are the qualities that fit the person’s character or story.
I’m not going to use that list…Neither am I going to talk about Jimmy’s dozens of memberships
and honourable memberships, his many awards, prizes, decorations or the boards he sits on…
I am going to tell you a story:When Jimmy and the other founding partners decided to buy Las
Aves, the original idea was to create an exclusive, restricted Club such as those in Great Britain or the U.S. But Jimmy soon raised the bar even higher…
To explain to you why this was always going to be inevitable, I’m going to tell you an anecdote that has come to me many times over the years and which happened more or less around the same time…
Jimmy was looking through photos and catalogues of XVII cen-tury Spanish paintings, with all the information about them on the table in front of him…

“Estos dos cuadros no son UP TO MY STANDARD!!”
UP TO MY STANDARD.¡Esta es la clave!

RYDER CUP 97, A DREAM COME TRUESotogrande Magazine chats with James Stewart, CEO and Managing Director of Valderrama during the years leading up to and including the Ryder Cup being held in Sotogrande: My relationship with Jaime Ortiz Patiño started by chance. I was a member at Valderrama and, I don’t know exactly how, but he asked me to help him organise the 1991 Volvo Masters. When it was over, he sat me down and told me that he wanted to bring the Ryder Cup to Valderrama but he didn’t know where to start and he needed someone to help. That’s how the great adventure started. In the beginning it was really hard. The European Tour gave us a definitive no, they told us that Seve wanted to bring it to Madrid; that it was impossible...The truth is that nobody though Jaime would do it. Nobody, except one of his friends who was also a member of Valderrama and offered him his full support. That friend was Lord MacLaurin, CEO of Tesco and someone who was very used to dealing with things like this.In April of ‘92 we made a presentation to the Real Federación Española de Golf and to the European Tour in London in the form of a book that later received various editorial prizes. That gave us a lot of publicity; we were in the press and surprising everyone by fighting for something that was still a long way away. By ‘92 we had even booked all the necessary hotel rooms for the Ryder Cup already! That was so important, because it showed everyone that ours was the perfect venue, the Volvo Masters had been happening here for years and we already had the infrastructure to deal with the biggest golfing event in the world. In 1993, they announced that the championship was coming to Spain. The circle had closed and now we were competing on a national level, above all with La Manga and Madrid. This part of the story wasn’t easy either. We worked extremely hard to get the Ryder Cup and it was really tough. It is no secret that working with Jaime could get complicated. But it is also true that his vision and his determination to get what he wanted was extraordinary. So much so that he managed to get the Ryder Cup to come to Valderrama the first year that it was played outside Great Britain.A moment that I remember especially fondly from that time of struggle but also of glory, is watching King Juan Carlos come down the Valderrama steps with Jaime. I was watching from the terrace and thinking: Have six years really past? Have we really done this? The truth is that it was one of the biggest days of my life and I am sure it was one of the most exciting for Jaime Ortiz Patiño.
WE WORKED EXTREMELY HARD TO GET THE RYDER CUP AND IT WAS
REALLY TOUGH. It is no secret that working with Jaime could get
complicated. But it is also true that his vision and his determination to get
what he wanted was extraordinary.
All of a sudden he grabbed two of the photos that were lying in a corner and said in a loud, irritated voice:
“These two paintings are not UP TO MY STANDARD!!”UP TO MY STANDARD.That was the key!We are all capable of thinking BIG in theory….Few are capable of thinking BIG in practice…Even fewer are capable of making those practical ideas become
a reality.Jimmy belongs to this last category. He is a wonderful strategist and when he goes into battle, he
does it not only with a winning mentality, but also with abso-lutely everything planned down to the last second…
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the organisations that govern the world of golf (the R&A, the USGA, different PGAs, various Associations…a load of gobbledygook where everyone de-fends their own territory and turns golf into a world which is clas-sist and inaccessible), I can tell you that it is useless just to turn up and humbly knock at the door.
I don’t know how he did it, but I know that he did….and I am pretty sure that he did not knock humbly at any door….
Jimmy managed to get those doors wide open and the most ex-traordinary thing is that he walked in with all the confidence of a professor, even when he was still at school.
Yes! Jimmy finished school, and got a degree and a Masters in super quick time, graduating with honours.

"In ‘88 we hosted the first Volvo

¡aquello no eran vacaciones, sino trabajo!
They were years of hard work. He travelled a lot, he got up early, he had breakfast, lunch, dinner, attended parties, lots of them, he went to conferences, symposiums, all the big events…
And the technical knowledge and understanding started to come.
The house on Fernando el Santo transformed into the Ortiz Patiño Hotel, it was always full of guests announcing them-selves with acronyms or initials.
Felipe was exasperated...! At 8 at tee number 1, at 8 at the airport, at 8 somebody needs to go to the Town Hall...
“This is no holiday”, he grumbled. Of course not, Felipe...it
wasn’t a holiday, this was work!In ‘88 we hosted the first Volvo Masters and just after that,
in ‘91, Valderrama received its first nomination for “Europe’s Leading Golf Resort”, leaving number 39, Las Aves’ previous position, far behind...
We then entered into a really successful era, an era when not only our members but the whole world of Spanish golf started to get used to miraculous things happening. It started to feel nor-mal for example that the Volvo Masters came to us every year, and that we could watch the best European players fight it out right here at home in this little square of Andalusia.

PATIÑO, IRREPLACEABLEOne of the people who best knew Jaime Ortiz Patiño was his faithful squire, Alucinio Pineda Quiros. When he was just thirteen years old, he and Juan Zumaquero began to work for him as caddies, not knowing that they would spend the next forty years together. It was a close, familial bond that Alucinio remembers fondly: “Mr Jaime Ortiz Patiño was like a father to me. He was very demanding with his workers, but he cared deeply for us and always helped us. He was a wonderful boss and an irreplaceable person.”Among the lifetime of golf related anecdotes, Alucinio tells us that Mr Ortiz Patiño personally took care of 9 of the holes at Valderrama, right up to the last Volvo Masters: “There were 9 holes that he looked after himself. He really enjoyed getting up at 4:30 in the morning, having breakfast with his employees and going to look after his greens” remembers Pineda.
The miracle of having Tiger Woods at the 17th hole during the American Express Championship became normal.....and even the absolute miracle of the Ryder cup coming to Spain, of welcoming the greatest golfing event in the world to our course on its first out-ing from Great Britain, even that seemed almost normal…
There is nothing truer than the fact that the good things in life are easy to get used to...
Spain owes Jimmy an enormous debt. Enormous! He put Valderrama on the world golfing map and Valderrama it-
self helped millions of golfers all over the world identify our country with that wonderful photo of our 17th hole, or that one of the cork oaks lining a road filled with beautiful dappled light...
But Jimmy hasn’t just taught us what quality is on the golf course...
He knows better than anyone that being powerful requires above all that you be generous, that you share...
And that leadership is nothing if you don’t share what you know with those who need it.
15 years ago now, Jimmy organised for scholarships in Michigan State University, to give students the opportunity to receive the best standard of education and paving the way for Spanish golf courses to be managed at the highest of levels in the future.
Jimmy has always had his ears open to the needs of different com-munities within Sotogrande.

rado California, Palm Beach, Beijing, China, Cannes, Greece and Tokyo, recognises quality hotels, spas, golf courses, restau-rants, chefs, destinations, airlines and cruise lines as well as other similar businesses. However, it is not the first time that the team at the Almenara have received this prestigious award which is proof of the daily work that goes into maintaining their high standards of excellence. According to Jordi Caralt, the key to receiving this sort of recognition is the help of an extremely committed team:
“To achieve this sort of level, the first thing is to decide on clear and achievable goals; it is vital to know what the goal is that we want to attain. I say “we want to attain” because these objectives, this goal, must be shared by everyone. It is only pos-sible with an extremely professional and committed team. These could be seen as basic principles for the achievement of any common goal, but in this case, as service provided to the client is one of the elements being judged, it is even more important that the whole staff work hard to achieve the goals together. The challenge is to make sure that everyone works tirelessly in the same direction. When you want to be the best at something you cannot relax even for a day. In our business, we have to guarantee that we are giving our customers an optimum experi-ence at all times" says the manager.
The Almenara forms part of the NH Resorts category and is surrounded by some of the best golf courses in Europe, as well as having the Mediterranean on the horizon. According to Caralt, the category encompasses the chain´s holiday hotels, in other words, those built for rest and relaxation. There are 21 hotels

Our objective is to offer our clients the highest quality product in wonderful lo-cations and within an attractive price range. These establishments are chosen not only for the accommodation they of-fer but also for their unique locations (such as the Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi); for their excellent golf facili-ties (such as the Almenara which is in-ternationally recognised as one of the top resorts for golf in southern Europe); for their spa facilities (such as the Hes-peria Isla de la Toja), or for their ideal beach location (such as the Hesperia Lanzarote, which is located in the high-class neighbourhood of Puerto Calero)", says the Director of the group.
Under this strict philosophy, the Al-menara has become one of the jewels of Sotogrande. It is a refuge where you can enjoy luxurious facilities, one ex-ample being at Elysium, Almenara´s Wellness Centre and Spa. It is an oasis right at the centre of the resort and will incorporate even more services this sea-son, such as zumba classes for its new gym programme. This gym will also offer partial entry passes ("just gym") which were not previously available, as well as various offers for new members and those who renew. There is a high-quality equestrian centre, tennis and padel courts, an excellent beach club, El Cucurucho that is about to reopen its doors and a wide variety of places to eat. Overall, it is a prize-winning hotel where you will find the meaning of true quality of life. ■

SPRING IS COMING, WHAT IS ALMA AGUILAR INSPI-RED BY THIS SEASON?
Spring is always full of flowing fabrics, soft, sweet colours….there will be some classic Alma dresses with a nod to the present, and they will be more luxurious than ever…
WE MISSED YOUR CREATIONS AGAIN ON THE RUN-WAY IN MADRID, WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT PLANS? WILL WE HAVE THE PLEASURE OF SEEING YOUR PRÊT-À-PORTER AGAIN?
Ever since my daughter Angela was born in 2012, I decided to take my foot off the gas a little when it came to work, because the life of collec-tions and shows is a crazy one and my body was telling me to spend more time with my family. I also have to say, pret-a-porter in Spain is mortally wounded, and because of that we have started to focus more and more, and without even realising it, on sewing, on measurements, on brides….So we’ve put everything else to one side for a while. We will of course return to the runway and it might even be outside Spain, but it won’t be in 2013.

¿CÓMO IMAGINA EL TRAJE PARA UNA NOVIA EN SOTO-GRANDE?Mar, montaña, cielo azul, brisa y verde…
YOUR WEDDING DRESSES ARE EVERY WOMAN’S DREAM. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE AN ALMA AGUILAR BRIDE?
She is a bride who is absolutely true to herself…feminine, appre-ciates a well made garment and rejects anything ostentatious…and of course, within those parameters there are thousands of types of woman. I like making dresses for brides, not just giving her something and hoping she likes it. I try to get the best of each bride and construct the dress with her, it’s wonderful!
AT WHAT POINT DID YOU DECIDE TO START DESIG-NING WEDDING DRESSES AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO DO IT?
It was a client who said to me, “Alma, I don’t know whether you know this but you’re going to make me a wedding dress”. I had never made one before (I was very respectful of them) and when we had fin-ished that one I thought, “this is what I want to do”…and so it was.
HOW DO YOU PICTURE A SOTOGRANDE BRIDE?Sea, mountains, blue sky, light breeze, green…..natural, sophisti-
cated….. I need to put a face to a bride to be able to properly imagine her dress, but beautiful, of course.
DO YOU HAVE A WEDDING COLLECTION OR ARE ALL YOUR DRESSES CUSTOM-MADE?
We have a small collection that is constantly changing year on year (so that brides can try on at least 2 or 3 different shapes and necklines), but almost 95% of our brides want us to make their dresses from scratch, and that is what we best know how to do, and what we enjoy the most.

YOUR MOST FAMOUS ITEMS ARE YOUR DRESSES AND YOUR COATS. HAVE YOU EVER USED THE SE-COND FOR A BRIDAL LOOK?
Yes, we have. I can remember a white, silk velvet coat; a hand-made mohair coat, there was one in organza…
AS SOMEONE WHO DESIGNS BRIDAL GOWNS, HOW DID YOU LOOK AT YOUR WEDDING?
Well…it was, of course, a feminine and romantic dress, with a little country ‘apron’….the dress was chiffon with mother of pearl and crystal beading round the neckline, it had straps and a very low back. I probably wouldn’t make the same dress for myself today, but of course, it was 13 years ago and I keep it very carefully as it means a great deal to me.
THE STANDARD OF SPANISH DESIGNERS IS INCRE-DIBLE. HOWEVER, THE CRISIS HAS HIT THE FAS-HION INDUSTRY HARD. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRI-BE THE CURRENT SITUATION?
The industry has been deeply damaged, but I am someone who prefers not to complain… Our precise sector is “accessible luxury” (even though it sounds like rhetoric, it is technically true). As has been the way with almost everything, the gap between inaccessible luxury and mass produced items has grown, leaving everything that used to be in the middle (such as the middle class) in a state of limbo, waiting to find its place again.
WHEN YOU LEAVE YOUR WORKSHOP, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO?
Spend time at home with my girls, paint, travel...eat and cook!....
I like making dresses for brides, not just giving her something and hoping she likes it. I try to get the best of each bride and construct the dress with her, it’s wonderful!
Me gusta hacer vestidos para cada
novia.

• This type of diet is associated with higher intake of animal fats (saturated fats) and with higher levels of LDL (“bad” cholesterol), both of which raise the risk of heart disease and heart attacks.
• Intake of other healthy food groups which should provide essential nutrients such as fruit, vegetables, beans and types of cereal, is heavily restricted. As a consequence, there is also a considerable reduction in intake of foods which are rich in antioxidants and fundamental for maintaining optimum health levels and preventing development of certain types of cancer.
• Limiting intake of fi bre-rich foods often causes chronic constipation, and all the uncomfortable symptoms that can lead to.
• To a great extent, the weight loss experienced in the initial stages of this diet is due to fl uid loss as a consequence of restricting intake of carbohydrates.
• The main disadvantage of a high protein diet for the body is the disturbance of what could be called the body’s acid-base balance. The increase in daily protein intake and the lack of fruit and vegetables is a diet with higher levels of acidity and can cause chronic metabolic acidosis. This can have effects such as:
o Bone decalcifi cation and osteoporosiso Kidney overloado Imbalances in the endocrine glands. Reduced production of growth hormone. Reduction in growth of plasma IGF-1 in kidneys and liver. This is
vital for the regulation of glucose metabolism via insulin. Reduction in thyroid hormones T3 and T4 and parathyroid
hormone. Increased production of glucocorticoids. Reduction in vitamin D.
Conclusion
1. Seek professional advice from a nutritionist or endocrinologist. Ask your doctor whether he/she would recommend you begin a high protein diet and what risks he/she foresees to your health.
2. Don’t “go over the top” or take this kind of diet to extremes. Don’t exclude large food groups such as fruit or vegetables from your diet.
3. Avoid high G.I. carbohydrates. Start when you do your shopping, just don’t keep them in the house. If you want to treat yourself, do it outside the house, go to a restaurant, etc…
4. Increase your daily level of exercise.

ESPECTÁCULO AÉREOEN EL ESTRECHO
AERIAL SPECTACLE OVER THE STRAITS
The Straits of Gibraltar is one of the most important places in the world for migrating birds. It is the point of separation between two continents (the 14 km between Europe and Africa) as well as two seas (the Atlantic ocean and Mediterranean sea) and an essential part of the migratory path of millions of birds who spend the summer making their nests in continental Europe and then fly to Africa in order to survive the winter.
The mass migration over the Straits during the seasons of spring and autumn is one of nature’s most impressive spec-tacles. Because of its geographical characteristics, thou-
sands and thousands of birds meet here, taking advantage of the fact that the Mediterranean is brought down to just a few kilometres at the Straits. This is vital for soaring birds such as large raptors or storks that prefer not to fly for long distances over open sea because of the lack of the rising hot air they depend on to gain height. They don’t have this problem over the hot earth of the Mediterranean coast which provides plenty of these thermal currents, carrying thou-sands of kites, European honey buzzards, booted and short-toed ea-gles, Egyptian vultures and storks with them as they rise. Then, once the birds have reached a good height of hundreds of metres, they can soar easily over the Straits, using almost no effort at all.

KEY OBSERVATION POINTSThere are a great number of observatories where you can spot soaring birds, since they are large and visible at a great distance, although Algarrobo (East) in Algeciras and Cazalla (West) in Tarifa, are perhaps the best. When it comes to non-soaring birds, which are normally small in size, it is impossible to observe their migration if you aren’t in exactly the right place at the right time. The beach at La Atunara (East) and Los Lances (West) are two excellent places to spot these birds.
DID YOU KNOW?That every day soaring birds use currents of warm air rising from the ground to cross the Straits, just by gliding?
That censuses made on the island of Tarifa tell us exactly how many of the endange-red Balearic Shearwaters still exist?

THE MAJORITY OF BIRDS

WESTERN HALF OF EUROPE
More than 40 million migratory birds pass through the area every year. From large soaring birds to sea birds and even small passerines. It is estimated that half a million of the the larger wing-spanned birds such as raptors and storks make their way over the Straits every migration season.
The movements of these birds are periodic and regular, every year there is an outward journey (autumn migration, after reproduction) and a return journey (spring migration, when they return in order to reproduce), taking place during the change between summer-autumn and winter-spring respectively.
The majority of birds which migrate through the Straits of Gibral-tar come from areas in the western half of Europe (see the European map of the origins and destinations of migratory species). Along this latitudinal gradient, there are many bird populations with differing migratory behaviour. Some end their journeys along the European At-lantic coastline, finding protection amongst the rough terrain of the interior and northern areas of the continent. Others however, choose to continue their journey further South. In some cases they fly to the warmest areas of the Iberian Peninsula and of North Africa. In others, they fly all the way down to sub-Saharan Africa. Because of this, the Straits of Gibraltar occupies an extremely strategic position for a great deal of aerial movement.

THE MYSTERY OF MIGRATIONThroughout history, many naturalists and scientists tried to explain where birds went when the seasons changed. There were endless numbers of theories on the subject, with some believing that cuckoos transformed into sparrow-hawks during autumn and winter, and some believing that many birds went to the moon over winter. In 1899, the Dane Hans Christian Mortensen had the brilliant idea of tagging birds by attaching a ring to their feet. This was so successful that in only a few years, scientists in Germany, the UK, Scandinavia, Hungary and Yugoslavia were all putting rings onto birds in order to investigate their migration patterns. A modern, new system of studying migration had been born!

THE STRAITS OF GIBRALTAR plays a very important role in the migration of soaring birds. Storks, kites,
vultures, honey buzzards, booted and short-toed eagles all fly by taking advantage of thermals, the
columns of hot air that rise from ground which is heated by the sun.
Land birds, that tend to avoid long sea journeys, end up being directed towards the Iberian Peninsula because of the very shape of the European coastline. The Peninsula thus becomes the spring-board for the leap over to North Africa. In fact, many of the birds who migrate during the night and fly very high in a broad front, start off over the ocean towards Africa from the Western half of the Peninsula (Bernis 1962, Hilgerloh 1988). For these birds, the Straits seems like an irrelevant accident. But for those who migrate during the day, those that are most reluctant to go out over the sea, it makes sense to take a detour around the Iberian coast and then make the crossing to Africa over an almost negligible stretch of water. From this perspective, the northern side of the Straits of Gibraltar is the end of a great Iberian bottleneck which many of the migrants picked up by the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts must pass through.
The Straits of Gibraltar plays a very important role in the migration of soaring birds. Storks, kites, vultures, honey buzzards, booted and short-toed eagles all fly by taking advantage of thermals, the columns of hot air that rise from ground which is heated by the sun. These thermals take the birds up to a great height and from there they can start off to their predetermined destinations. Through this system of navigation, they are able to travel great distances while expending the minimum amount of energy. Indeed, many of these birds are simply not adapted to survive large periods of active flight. Since thermals form over land (sea water absorbs radiation and does not heat up the air), they are prevented from leaving the coast. So they assemble in those places where with a little help from a thermal, they can simple glide across to the other side. In this way, the Straits of Gibraltar, together with the Bosphorus and Messina Straits, becomes one of the essential fly-ways for hundreds of thousands of soaring birds on their way to Africa. n

They say there is nothing like the eyes of a greyhound. Full of kindness and affection, they also hide a secret sadness. Despite being ideal the human companion,
every year more than 50,000 of the breed die because of in-discriminate breeding and their short working life. Associa-tions such as SOS Galgos, a national charity organisation, have worked for these dogs for years, battling to protect these beautiful and defenceless animals.
In Cádiz, this association is proud to have Almudena Romero as Honorary Vice President of SOS Galgos and a great defender of the breed. Her work towards rescuing, shel-tering and rehoming dogs has been of incalculable value. Her will to fight is irrepressible. According to Almudena, the most important fight for SOS Galgos is legal and edu-cational. One of their principal aims is to achieve a total ban on hunting with greyhounds in Spain. They have even taken their fight to Europe, participating in demonstrations in front of the European parliament and presenting informa-tion on the cruel reality of these animals.
SOS GALGOS.POR UN FINAL FELIZ
SOS GALGOS.A HAPPY ENDING
Elegant and majestic, the greyhound was one of the first dogs domesticated by man. Yet despite their glorious past, today they are one of the most mistreated breeds in Spain. Their athletic character and hunting ability have made them very attractive for profit making enterprises and caused them to suffer all types of humiliation and abandonment when they cease to be useful. Organisations such as SOS Galgos work hard every day to be a voice for these noble animals and to achieve a happy ending for each one of them.

Villa Oasis is a stunning property located in one of the best areas of Sotogrande. A masterful fusion of classic and mod-ern architecture, a brand new vision of old Andalusian ar-

In Villa Oasis, the location plays just as important a role as the house itself. The house, the garden, the decoration, the design.... every millimetre, every corner is inter-connected in order to form a collective expression of relaxing peace and tranquillity.
All of this harmony translates into bright, open spaces, where the outside and the inside interact to create light-filled interior patios with pillars and fountains providing refreshment for the eyes and
tying everything together with sound. They are special places, where the light washes every corner thanks to vaulted ceilings and windows as well as other tricks that have been used to get the most out of the warmth of the Mediterranean.
The spirit of teamwork at ARK has helped them spend the last ten years creating beautiful spaces just like this one, follow-ing through from the birth of the idea right to the moment when it is ready to be enjoyed.
America, on the other hand, al-ways seems to have remained on the sidelines of these competitive
events. Nevertheless, in 1950, Mexico’s Federal Government decided to introduce a new contest, the Carrera Panamericano or Mexican Road – that owes its name to the highway that had just been completed. This highway ran the length of the country and would later cross the entire American continent.
The Federal Government wanted to use this competition to encourage foreign in-vestment and attract tourists to the land of tacos and quesadillas. The way they saw it, the highway was the best way of making a profit from the recently constructed road.
It was the President of the Republic, Miguel Alemán himself who, along with his team, personally supervised the organi-sation of his new car racing event.
The best drivers in the world started to arrive from all over with one idea in mind, to win this important first race. The thirty two listed drivers drove for approximately three thousand kilometres through jungle, desert and forest.
Crowds of people came from their towns and cities to the edges of the track to see and be part of what was being described as the event of the year in Mexico and beyond.
The Carrera Panamericana was and still is considered by the experts to be one of the hardest and most complicated races in the world, judging it even tougher than the classic European contests. This is down to the fact that the road, that starts at sea level in tropical conditions, with high humidity and temperatures close to thirty six degrees, becomes, in less than seventy

two hours, an utterly different road, reaching an altitude of three thousand metres and descending to temperatures of two degrees. Added to this was the constant need to rec-alibrate the motors to the differing conditions with regard to oxygen, humidity and tempera-ture that they experienced at different stages of the competition.
Furthermore, the surface of the Mexican section of the highway had been made using volcanic ash, a highly abrasive material that made brand new tyres bald and useless with-in less than a thousand kilometres, meaning there was a constant danger of puncture.
A total of twenty seven people lost their lives during the race between 1950 and 1955,
an extraordinary figure that forced organisers to cancel the event. The Carrera Panamericana gained international fame for being
the most dangerous race of all time which in turn transformed it into an iconic experience and a Mecca for racing drivers. Maybe be-cause of this, it was brought back to life in 1988 and has happened every year since then.
Mexico, itself a country full of stark con-trasts, turned this great competition into a unique experience, highly charged with exoti-cism. It is a true adventure for drivers and their teams, many of whom come to the land of Moctezuma all the way from Europe, will-ing to risk their lives in search of victory, just like those who came before them.■

HISTORIA
José Regueira Ramos - Official Chronicler of Jimena
This episode has been studied and published on by researchers such as José Manuel Algarbani and Luis Romero from the IECG.
One of the shocking facts that emerge about this story is that twenty four fishermen from Galician trawlers the San Fausto and the Con, died on board the José Luis Diez, just days after setting out to fish from the port of Alge-ciras where they were based. I wrote about the mysterious disappearance of these twenty four fishermen on the Straits in La Voz de Galicia, in La Coruña and it was in the process of writ-ing this article that I first got in contact with Gaspar Santos Pereira, grandson of Enrique Pereira, Captain of the San Fausto. He was very much interested in clearing up the facts of this case which were subject to a good deal of speculation from press on both sides when the disappearance occurred in 1938.
This search resulted in complete clarifica-tion of the facts, which were reflected in my opening talk at the latest IECG History Con-ference. Also at the Conference was the writer Pedro Castilla from Cádiz, who, inspired by the story, decided to write a book on the sub-ject. He asked me for the text of my speech and subsequently wrote the book Soltando Amar-ras, a beautiful homage to all fishermen and in particular to the 24 who died on the Straits.
On the occasion of the book launch, tributes were organised to these fishermen, both in Cádiz and in Galicia. They were all very mov-ing and hugely well attended events.
The third of these took place on Friday the 8th of March in the Millán Picazo Au-ditorium in Algeciras, and it managed to be even more successful and poignant than the previous two. The Auditorium is just moments away from the very fishing dock that the boats set out from. The IECG were active partici-pants in the organisation and running of this ceremony and one of the directors spoke to of-fer me and the other speakers his support as a member of the Institute. The participants were as follows:
I spoke about how the tragedy developed, aided by the projection of powerful photo-graphs and documents. Then came Ángeles Pereira, granddaughter of Captain Enrique Pereira. She is a Literature professor, a writer and an excellent poet, having written various beautiful poems dedicated to the fishermen. She was followed by Manuela Pereira, the only living child of the aforementioned fisher-man. She is an Algeciras local whose very life is a beautiful poem. She was born here on the 17th of July, 1936, the fateful day when war broke out in Morocco, and at only one day old experienced the beginning of the war in Spain and specifically in Algeciras where the
first troops arrived from Morocco. Made an orphan at two years old with the tragic death of her father, the family went back to Galicia where their lives were fraught with disaster. As a young woman she decided to dedicate her life to looking after the poorest and most defence-less in our society and now she is herself an institution within the venerable institution of the Cottolengo Convent in Barcelona. At the age of 76 she returned to the city of her birth for the first time. She returned on the very day of the homage to her father and his unfortu-nate companions. It is difficult to imagine more moving circumstances.
Next to speak was María Oliva, the current President of the Algeciras Fishing Guild and the first woman to hold this position in Anda-lusia and probably all of Spain. She spoke of the serious problems that the fishing industry in Algeciras is currently facing, just like the other ports in the South. Then José Antonio Hernández, Professor of Economic Theory and President of the University of Cádiz Arts Club presented the book to the audience. Last to speak was the author Pedro Castilla. The event was coordinated and presented by Es-ther Regueira, historian and representative for Spain at the European Biennial of Contem-porary Art, Manifesta. All proceeds will go to charity.■

TRAGEDY ON THE STRAITS:THE INSTITUTE OF CAMPO DE GIBRALTAR STUDIES AND A
TRIBUTE TO THE FISHERMEN OF ALGECIRAS
The Institute of Campo de Gibraltar Studies (IECG) has been doing an extraordinary job, though it is currently paralysed by economic difficulties. Its History Department has managed to shed light on many episodes in the region’s past. One of these is the incredible events of August, 1938, involving the Republican Navy destroyer, José Luis Diez on the Straits of Gibraltar.
The child of aristocrats, young Audrey spent her childhood between Belgium, England and the Netherlands, suffering both the separation of her parents and the scourge of the
Second World War which drove them to live in Holland, trying to hide their English roots. After the Normandy landings, terror came to the country and Audrey had to go through hunger, poverty and the horror of members of her family being shot, until liberation by allied troops.
However, the drama of the war didn’t reduce the dreams of her youth and she continued to train as a ballerina, this time in Lon-don, until her drastic economic situation forced her to take up act-ing, a profession she also loved and which paid considerably better.
After negotiating small parts in a couple of English productions which put her into the spotlight, she presented herself for audition for a romantic comedy that William Wyler was preparing. The film was Roman Holiday and the lead role was written with Liz Taylor firmly in mind. Nevertheless, both the director and the male lead, Gregory Peck, were intrigued by the fresh, mysterious magic that this new actress had brought with her from Old Europe.
Winning an Oscar gave her acting career an incredible start and soon after she was recruited by Billy Wilder to play the part of Sab-

rina. It was during the making of this film that she rubbed shoulders with Givenchy for the first time, the designer with whom she would have a life-long association.
From one day to the next, Audrey became one of Hollywood’s most recognised and most beloved stars, by the public, her fellow actors and by critics. We see her working with the biggest stars in cinema, such as in Funny Face where she had the opportunity to dance (her great passion) with Fred Astaire. She appeared in War and Peace, Love in the Afternoon and The Unforgiven, as well as The Nun’s Story where she took on one of the most controversial and iconic roles of her career, in a bid to show everyone that she was more than just a pretty face.
Even so, nothing compared with the popularity that awaited her after winning the part of Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffa-ny’s. The lead role in the film had been imagined and written for Truman Capote’s personal friend Marilyn Monroe, but because she was currently obsessed with the idea that she should be taking on more serious roles, she couldn’t see the immense charisma that the project had, and turned it down. In the end, the sum meant for Monroe went to Hepburn who agreed to play the high-class prostitute and transformed the role into one which will always be invoked as a legend of elegance.

After the enormous success of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, she appeared in The Children’s Hour, a drama that took on the subject of homo-sexual love, and Charade, a satirical comedy on mystery films where she shared the limelight with Cary Grant; their chemistry led the actor to comment on more than one occasion that “all I want for Christmas is another picture with Audrey Hepburn”.
In 1964, at 35 years of age, Audrey, the glittering star of the silver screen beat the irrepressible Elizabeth Taylor as well as rising star Julie Andrews to the lead in My Fair Lady, the ambitious musical project of the moment. The filming had its fair share of controversy; Rex Harrison, the lead male actor preferred Andrews above Hepburn and the songs, that Audrey herself had sung, were later dubbed over with the voice of Marnie Nixon at the behest of the producer. On top of everything else, Hepburn’s honest portrayal missed out on an Academy Award nomination, unlike Julie Andrews who won Best Actress for Mary Poppins. Hepburn fiercely denied any rivalry between them.
Towards the end of the 60s, Audrey began to feel tired after years of success and non-stop work, which led her to focus her energies on her family and personal life. Amongst her last films, a few stand out including the wonderful road movie, Two for the Road, the innova-
tive horror film titled Wait Until Dark, the brilliant romantic drama Robin and Marian, which is wrapped in nostalgic charm and her final appearance in Always, where Spielberg had her play an angel, which turned out to be a strange premonition.
Afflicted by appendix cancer, she died quietly in her home in Swit-zerland at the age of 63, after expending all her energy helping the most needy and helpless.
Despite the fact that she will always be acclaimed as one of the most popular and iconic figures in cinematic history, the truth is that Audrey always avoided the awards and labels that the industry asked her to put up with in return for recognition and work.
Far from the dancing, the lights, the sparkle and Hollywood’s mad-ding crowds, Audrey Kathleen Ruston could never forget that once upon a time she had been Edda Van Heemstra, the one she had be-come in the years of war, hunger and persecution. Never forgetting her traumatic past, in her later years she increased her humanitarian activism for causes such as AIDS or child hunger in poorer countries. After being declared terminally ill, she travelled to Somalia on one last journey as a Unicef ambassador, where she showed the world what her true concerns really were.n

Despite the fact that national chefs outnumbered those from elsewhere, those international chefs that did appear provided some interesting sur-prises during their talks. One surprise which stood out was presented by Stefan Weisner. To everyone’s surprise, he took out an electric saw and a plane and made a cherry wood plate right on stage which he then used to cook a salmon fillet in an ultraviolet oven.

We travelled to Marqués de Riscal’s City of Wine in order to find the perfect wine for spring. Surround-ed by the vineyards of the City of Wine, we sampled

When we began to describe the wine, every note, every de-tail, surprised us with memories of spring. In appearance it is a wine that has the same light yellow tones as a May afternoon, with glints of green reminding you of the country. The nose re-veals a complex white, with notes of fresh grass, a mineral base that gives it personality, as well as plentiful fresh fruit such as citrus fruits, pineapple and melon.

CÓMO ENTENDEREL SWING DE GOLF.
SUS PRINCIPIOS.POR KIKO LUNA
UNDERSTANDING THE GOLF SWING. BASIC PRINCIPLES.BY KIKO LUNA
In golf, it is all about momentum.Force is created by the twists and movementsof the body which then deliver speed to thearms which is then transferred to the handsand finally to the club. The whole swing process works like a chain f levers; the backswing starts in the legs, moving to the hips, the shoulders, the armsand finally the hands and the downswingstarts with the legs, moving to the hips, the shoulders, the arms and finally the hands.
128
First PrincipleIn golf there are two axes of rotation: the legs. They are the foun-
dations for the body’s movement. The legs move laterally, shifting the body’s weight in order to achieve the ideal balance to launch forward. The body is in continuous movement.
Second PrincipleThe hips rotate in a circular motion above the legs (axes of rota-
tion) producing speed which then creates momentum.Professional players start off with their hips slightly open, in oth-
er words, pointing towards the left to create a more powerful swing. The angle of the right foot, which is under stress at the highest point of the backswing, works as a limit for the hips. On impact, the hips spring out of the twist, letting the arms launch forward.
01
02
129
EL SWING DE GOLF
LA REVISTA DE SOTOGRANDE - SOTOGRANDE GOLF MAGAZINE
Third PrincipleThe shoulders rotate on the axis formed by the spine, in other
words, they rotate up and down in relation to the ground and in a circular motion in relation to the spine. This is because the back is inclined towards the ground. The angle of the back in relation to the ground must be maintained during the stance, the backswing and impact. This is fundamental in order to create consistent con-tact with the ball.
Fourth PrincipleThe left arm (for those who are right handed) maintains the
same level of extension during the lift as during the stance (no one holds the left arm completely straight in the stance so it will not be straight at the height of the backswing either). The arm will be stretched on impact and decelerates just before hitting the ball to transfer the speed first to the hands and subsequently to the club head.

EL SWING DE GOLF
LA REVISTA DE SOTOGRANDE - SOTOGRANDE GOLF MAGAZINE
Fifth PrincipleWe know that grip is what controls the face of the club and thus
controls what happens to the ball. Biomechanically, you have to have a strong grip, twisted towards the right, because it is the best way of making you move your body to result in the greatest power on impact. The weaker the grip is, the more you will need to use your hands to force the face of the club to be square for impact which will also cause you to stand straighter.
Sixth PrincipleIn order to transmit force, some parts of the body need to decelerate
while others accelerate. The important thing is to create the maximum speed on impact. The backswing works to create resistance, forming a spring for the descent. Just as with a bow and arrow, first you hold it taught and then you let go.
The descent starts in the legs which transmit the force to the hips which then moves to the shoulders, to the arms and finishes with the hands which transmit the force to the club head. The force and pres-sure from the arms and hands must not be too strong so that they can accelerate easily, reacting to the impulses of the body.●

The Andalusian Regional Government has given its backing to the application to locate a high performance centre at La Cañada Golf Club. The High Council for Sport must now give the project final approval so that funding can be sought.
The proposal is to create a high perfor-mance centre run by the Andalusian Golf Federation, the first of its type in the country.
The project envisages an investment of 450,000 euros in three annual instalments to build the infrastructure needed for the high performance centre, where the sporting careers of promising young golfers will be nurtured.l
Javier Reviriego, chairman of Valderrama Golf Club, has been recognised as the 2012 Manager of the Year. Reviriego himself indi-cated that he is very happy with the prize, particularly bearing in mind that the manag-ers of Spain’s golf clubs voted for him: “to be recognised by your colleagues is a great source of pride; it means that what you have done was significant, that your colleagues value the work you have done over the years, and it is therefore a prize that means a lot to me both personally and professionally’, said the award-winner.l

Spain did not give France a chance in the cus-tomary Boys’ Under-18s Match, overcoming them by a convincing 20.5 to 9.5 in a competition that brings the two countries up against each other, held once again at Club de Golf de Pau.
The Spanish team, made up of Sigot López, Klaus Ganter, Hugo Expósito, Jordi Panés, Erik Hedberg, Albert Sánchez, Xabier Gorospe, Javi-er Herrero, Javier Otaegui, Iván Cantero, Ma-nuel Elvira and Carlos Leandro, thus achieved their nineteenth victory in a duel that is now in its thirty-fourth year.l
