22 de Abril Tercer Domingo de Pascua
Mensaje del Párroco:
April 22, 2012 Third Sunday of Easter
Pastor’s Weekly Message: I’m finding it wonderful to kind of “settle in” with Easter. In our first readings during this whole season, we are treated to the story of the newborn Church, the Acts of the Apostles (or, as one Scripture Scholar says, more aptly named “The Acts of the Holy Spirit”). Each year, I am reminded that the Holy Spirit is the One who is really in charge, not me. And, when I accept that fact, marvelous things happen. It’s not that I don’t have to work; I do, and usually more than I would if I were the one deciding things. Yet, when I place myself, daily, under God’s guidance, I find that by the end of the day I have been more productive and I feel more content than if I try to control everything. My prayer for you, for myself, for this entire parish, is that we always let God take charge. We might be surprised at how good the outcome is! One area where surprises are happening seems to be in the air conditioning situation for St. Basil Hall. We still don’t have final numbers yet, but it looks like the bids will be less than we had originally anticipated. We have done this correctly (I hope!), by having an engineer draw up plans for a system that will serve us well, and be much more efficient than what we had before. I hope to have more news next week. I ask your prayers for Fr. Ritz, a faithful Basilian who many of you “old timers” will remember fondly. He had a serious stroke during Holy Week, and his recovery is progressing slowly. After 88 years of life, the body doesn’t heal as quickly as it used to. We pray that Fr. Ritz know the comfort and strength of God always. Pray, too, for our Confirmation candidates, on retreat this weekend, as they prepare for the celebration of the sacrament on May 6. May the Spirit of the risen Christ keep us all united in mind and heart!

“Have you anything here to eat?” were Jesus’ words to the disciples. A Basilian priest who I know and love often remarks that we always have to serve food at any gathering, because that’s the first thing Jesus asked for after his resurrection! As funny as that may sound, it is actually quite profound. It is in the breaking of the bread that the disciples recognized the risen Christ on a number of occasions. And, I think that if we consider these passages about the breaking of the bread to be only the Eucharist today, we are short-changing ourselves. Christ is indeed present in the sacred species, in the consecrated bread and wine that have become his Body and Blood. He is also present when we gather in his name, when we share a meal together, when we sit down and spend time together. When we break bread together we are given a new life. It is hard to sit at table, sharing food, for any length of time if we are not reconciled with one another. Eating is healing; eating strengthens us. It is life-giving on many levels. During this Easter season I am making a special effort to truly be present to others when I sit down at meals. May the same Christ who is present in our Eucharist, who was made known to the disciples in the Breaking of the Bread, also be present each time we break bread with one another.
You alone, O LORD, bring security to my dwelling. — Psalm 4:9

Sacred Scriptures don’t say much about Mary, the mother of Jesus. However, they do reveal Mary as a woman of faith, of service, of courage and compassion. A May Crowning Ceremony will be
held on Wednesday, May 2, at 5:30 p.m., after the End of CCE year awards program that will be held in the church. We will crown the image of Mary, Queen of Heaven, donated by the
Knights of Columbus in remembrance of the unborn children lost to abortion. Everyone is invited to bring a flower to place at the
foot of the statue in honor of Mary, our Blessed Mother.
