INTRODUCTION TRANSPORT ON ROADS CAN BE ROUGHLY GROUPED INTO
TWO CATEGORIES, TRANSPORTATION OF GOODS AND
TRANSPORTATION OF PEOPLE
IN MALAWI THE MAJOR PROVIDERS OF COMMUTER
TRANSPORT ARE THE MINIBUS OPERATORS WHO HAVE
FLOODED THE MARKET SINCE THE MID-1990S.
SINCE EARLY OF YEAR 2014, THERE HAS BEEN AN INFLUX OF
THE MOTOR TRICYCLE TAXIS POPULARLY KNOWN AS
‘TINJINGA’ ON THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SERVICE IN
LILONGWE, MOSTLY SEEN ON THE ROADS OF AREA 33, KCH
PROBLEM STATEMENT MUCH RESEARCH ON THE MOTOR TRICYCLE
TAXIS HAS BEEN DONE IN THE DEVELOPING
COUNTRIES OF ASIA AS WELL AS IN SOME
AFRICAN COUNTRIES.
ADETUNJI MUSILIMU (2013), ASSESSED THE
QUALITY OF URBAN TRANSPORT SERVICES IN
NIGERIA IN HIS STUDY THAT COVERED MUCH
ON THE EFFECTS OF THE MOTOR TRICYCLE
TAXIS ON PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN
NIGERIA.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
THERE HAS HOWEVER NOT BEEN ANY RESEARCH
OF MOTOR TRICYCLE TAXIS IN MALAWI, SINCE
THIS TREND IS RELATIVELY NEW. THERE IS A NEED
TO KNOW THE EFFECTS OF THE MOTOR TRICYCLE
TAXIS ON PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION DESPITE IT
BEING NEW. IT IS FOR THIS REASON THAT THIS
STUDY WAS DONE, FOCUSING ON
TRANSPORTATION BETWEEN AREA 33 AND TOWN
(SHOPRITE).

QUANTITATIVE APPROACH WAS USED TO COLLECT DATA FOR THIS STUDY
THE STUDY DIVIDED PARTICIPANTS INTO CLUSTERS
AND THEN RANDOMLY SAMPLED WITHIN EACH CLUSTER TO SELECT THE PARTICIPANTS.
THIS ENSURED THAT EACH INDIVIDUAL WAS GIVEN EQUAL CHANCE OF BEING CHOSEN.
THE STUDY SAMPLED A TOTAL OF 45 (90%) PARTICIPANTS OUT OF 50

TINJINGA ARE NOW A SOLUTION OF CONNECTING BETWEEN
CENTER TOWN (SHOPRITE) AND THE AREA, THAN THE
SITUATION BEFORE
THE INFLUX OF TINJINGA HAS BROUGHT IN FAR MORE
TRANSPORTATION CHALLENGES IN THE AREA THAN BEFORE
OVERALL, I AM MORE SATISFIED NOW THAN BEFORE WITH
COMMUTER TRANSPORTATION SERVICES IN THE AREA
OPERATORS EXPERIENCE
OTHER
I USED TO MAKE MORE TRIPS CARRYING PASSANGERS,
BEFORE THE COMING OF TINJINGA
IT TAKES MORE TIME TO LOAD THESE DAYS, THAN BEFORE
THE COMING OF TINJINGA IN THE AREA
I WOULD BE VERY HAPPY IF TINJINGA OPERTORS WOULD
RELOCATE TO SOME OTHER PLACE
THE COMING OF TINJINGA HAS NOT IN ANY WAY AFFECTED MY
BUSINESS, IN FACT MY BUSINESS IS FLOURISHING NOW
THAN BEFORE
CONCLUSSIONS THE STUDY ESTABLISHED THE BROADER EFFECTS OF THE MOTOR
TRICYCLE PASSENGER TAXI TO OTHER OPERATORS IN THE AREA. THE
FINDINGS SHOWED THAT ALL OF THE OTHER OPERATOR
RESPONDENTS EXPRESSED HOW UNRECEPTIVE THEY WERE OF THE
BOOMING MOTOR TRICYCLE TAXIS IN THE AREA.
THE STUDY CLEARLY ECHOED THE MODAL SPLIT THEORY THAT
BECAUSE OF THEIR VIABILITY, PRICE, QUICKNESS, AMONGST OTHER
CHARACTERISTICS, THE MOTOR TRICYCLES ARE MORE PREFERRED IN
AREA 33 – KCH.
RECOMMENDATIONS OTHER TRANSPORT SERVICE OPERATORS IN THE AREA
NEED TO WORK ON IMPROVING ON TIMELINESS OF THEIR
TRANSPORTATION SERVICES SO AS TO MAKE IT RELEVANT
TO THE COMMUTERS OF THE AREA WHO ARE USUALLY IN A
RUSH
OTHER AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT WOULD BE THE
TRANSPORTATION FARES & MAKING THE SERVICES MORE
AVAILABLE TO THE KINDS OF COMMUTERS OF THE AREA.
ANOTHER WAY OF WINING CUSTOMERS WOULD BE IN
MAKING THEIR TRANSPORTATION SERVICES MORE VIABLE
AND WITH LESS WAITING TIMES FOR THE TYPE OF
COMMUTERS IN THE AREA.
