“Lead us not into Temptation”
Jesus was tempted. He did not give in and
sin. During the season of Lent, we grow more
aware of the temptations and sins in our lives.
By prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we seek to
grow in holiness which means we grow into a
deeper relationship with Jesus.
However, Lent also brings a whole new
series of temptations. When I fast, I often “give
up” something which I enjoy such as Pringles.
During the rest of the year, if I want a Pringle, I
buy Pringles and chow down. When I fast from
Pringles for Lent, the temptation to eat them
grows. How can I remain strong and not cave in to
this temptation? Make it personal. Each day of
Lent offer your prayers, fasting and almsgiving
for a personal intention. On Monday, I offer it for
my parents, on Tuesday for sick friends, on
Wednesday for my co-workers…etc. In other
words, make each day personal by the intention
behind the act. Today, I will avoid this sin for the
members of SEAS.
Jesus understands the power of temptation
as we see in today’s Gospel. Later he teaches us
to pray, “Lead us not into temptation.” And yet,
when we give into temptation we mess up our
Lenten practices. What to do then? Get up and
carry on. Start again. If you sin go to confession
and start again. This is God’s mercy. He wants us
to begin again, no matter how many times.

hacer entonces? Levantarse y continuar. Empezar
de nuevo. Si pecas ve a confesión y empieza de
nuevo.
ces.

Lenten Abstinence and Fasting Regulations
Just as a reminder, during Lent we are called to abstain from meat on Fridays as a reminder that our Lord
offered His body — a flesh sacrifice — for our sins. We also abstain from meat and fast on Ash Wednesday
and Good Friday. Here the fast entails having only one full meal a day which is sufficient to
maintain one’s strength. Two other meatless meals are allowed, but are to be light and
penitential. Everyone 14 years of age and older is bound to the law of abstinence, and
everyone 18 years of age but not yet 60 is bound to the law of fasting. Of course, one must
be mindful of his own physical condition. These physical sacrifices help each of us to be
spiritually mindful that Our Lord suffered and died for our sins.
